  • In Clapton's autobiography, he told the story of how the Yardbirds had got a gig supporting blues musicians Sonny Boy Williamson. Clapton recounted that 'in my role of blues expert of Ripley' he knew that Sonny Boy wasn't the original musician of that name but actually Alex 'Rice' Miller, who'd adopted Sonny Boy Williamson's name as his own stage name after Williamson died in 1948. Teenage Clapton made the, with hindsight, very poor decision to raise the subject with the great man:
So when we were first introduced to him at the Crawdaddy, I couldn’t wait to show off, and tried to impress him with my knowledge, asking him, ‘Isn’t your real name Rice Miller?’ at which point he slowly pulled out a small penknife and glared at me. It went downhill from there.
