Funny / Captain Lou Albano

Go To

  • Captain Lou was almost a walking Crowning Moment of Funny, just for the sheer eccentricity and bizarreness of his character, but one moment does stand out. Back when Lou was managing Ivan Koloff against Bruno Sammartino, Lou started a brouhaha by some highly impolite comments about the then-WWWF's Italian and Hispanic fans. This led to Lou getting cursed at and even receiving death threats from some fans (at least to hear him tell it), and ended with Lou forced to flee Madison Square Garden after cheating to help Koloff win. Where did he flee? Right into a bar filled with angry Latinos who'd just watched the match and were saying, "If only we could get our hands on that asshole!..."
  • Albano was unintentionally on the receiving end of a funny moment that was unplanned. In 1983, he was paired with then-WWF Intercontinental Champion Don Muraco, and to help push Muraco as an arrogant, disrespectful heel, they came up with the idea of having Muraco bring lunch out with him to one of his matches. And so it was: A meatball hoagie was heated up and Muraco and Albano brought it out to the ring ... and in between beating down a Jobber, Muraco took several bites from his sandwich. Shortly after Muraco finished off his opponent, Albano came to the ring to greet Muraco and help rile up the audience ... but he forgot that he had put the sandwich on the steps leading to the ring. On the way down, Albano slipped and fell from the steps ... and the audience howled in laughter as Albano (who was uninjured) got up and left with Muraco. Muraco, by the way, was doing all he could to remain in character until he got to the back, but it was clear that he was about to break out in laughter.
