Fridge / The Grinch (2018)

Fridge Brilliance

  • One of the complaints that people have about this movie is that the original book and even the movie itself say that Grinch has "a heart two sizes too small", which means that he shouldn't be nice at all, and yet in this movie, the Grinch treats Max like a beloved pet rather than a slave (unlike in the previous adaptations) and even lets Fred go when he finds out that he has a mate and a child. However, let's really look at that sentence: "He has a heart that's two sizes too small". The Grinch HAS a heart, even before his Heel–Face Turn, he just doesn't show it very much or it's limited to only a few people (or rather, animals). It's an itty bitty heart, but it is there.
  • The Grinch clearly has money as he goes to town to buy food. Further, his "neighbor" recognizes him, and no one seems shocked or surprised to see him around town. The Grinch probably makes his money selling and patenting his gizmos and gadgets. In fact, he is probably the inventor of most of the Seussian gadgets seen in town.
  • Bricklebaum says that the mayor of Whoville wants to make Christmas three times bigger "this year". And as most people know, the Grinch's heart also grows by three sizes at the end of the story. Furthermore, you could say that the fact that the Grinch's heart grows makes the Christmas better, since Whoville now has another person that celebrates Christmas with them...
  • Cindy Lou does get her Christmas wish, if the scenes playing behind the closing credits count. She wished for her mom to get some help so she doesn't have to work so hard, and during the credits we see the Grinch has made gadgets to do housework for her.
  • The song the Grinch plays on the organ is "All By Myself" - which is written from the perspective of someone who doesn't actually want to be all by themselves. Subconsciously, the Grinch doesn't want to be alone either.

Fridge Logic

  • When The Grinch is invited for Christmas dinner at six, all the decorations are sorted back to their original families and rehung, both indoors and out. There is no way the Who's had time to do all of that, let alone have time left over to carry on their usual Christmas traditions (such as making dinner).
    • The sun rises at around eight on Christmas morning, and Whoville is a small town of only 223 houses. Their things are more or less bunched together by bag, and they have ten hours to sort out said bags, put the decorations back up, open their gifts, and make Christmas dinner. It's also entirely possible they pitched in to help each other, because they're like that.
  • Benedict Cumberbatch justified using an American accent for the Grinch since all the Whos spoke with them. This is despite the fact that Grinch lives isolated away from the rest of them, which would make him having a different dialect much more appropriate.
