Fridge Brilliance:

  • Players of Shenmue II usually detest the book carrying and leaf catching minigames at Man Mo temple for being a major test of the player's patience, particularly the former, where trying to rush through makes the task far more difficult. When you think about it, the reason they test your patience so much is that, in-story, they're meant to teach patience to Ryo.

Fridge Logic:

  • The Non-Standard Game Over with Lan Di returning to kill Ryo occurs even if he spends every day from the start of the game doing nothing but buying capsule toys, drinking coke and playing in the arcade. Which means that Lan Di let Ryo go at the start of the game only to return a year later and kill a boy who had made no attempt to come after him and was just living his life. You would think that a man like Lan Di would have more important things to do.
    • Which in itself does ruin the overarching theme that revenge isn't a good path to go down. If Ryo hadn't done anything he would have been killed regardless.
      • Lan Di didn't come back to kill him; he came back to obtain the Phoenix Mirror, as he had since been informed that Iwao also had it in his possession. He had no personal quarrel with Ryo and would have likely just claimed the other mirror and departed for good, had Ryo not tried to attack him again (i.e. Ryo's desire for vengeance is still what dooms him).
