Fridge Brilliance

  • While the seeming rulers of Heaven, the Believers, are often shown to be borderline sadistic in how they treat the Neons, most of the Angels like Mikey and Raz are shown to be more sympathetic and welcoming of them. This is because the game later reveals that Angels are directly subservient to God, who was overthrown by the Believers after waging a war on Him to reshape heaven to their own personal liking. Consequently the Angels have a negative opinion of the Believers, and view Neons with pity since rather than being allowed judgment by God, they're forced to clean up the Believers' dirty work.
    • Additionally, the masks that Neons are forced to wear are forged from dead Angels that fell in the war against the Believers, meaning that when the Angels interact with the Neons, they're staring at the visage of their fallen comrades.
  • The Sidequest levels which are unlocked as part of completing the relationship charts of other Neons are all thematically designed after aspects of their own personality and history.
    • Yellow's Sidequests are built around combat and prohibit the use of discarding weapons for movement. In life, Yellow was the group's muscle and served as the enforcer. He boasts an easygoing personality and eschews complex principles in favor of facing obstacles head-on and going with the flow.
    • Violet's Sidequests are built around avoiding hazardous terrain and making split-second decisions to avoid death. In life, Violet was the group's technician and would work to circumvent enemy security systems and design deadly contraptions. She herself is violent and sadistic, and isn't above wanting to kill her teammates.
    • Red's Sidequests are built around skillfully utilizing discard abilities to traverse layered levels. In life, Red was a talented tactician who's only equal in proficiency and finesse was White. She has the personality of a teasing femme fatale, not only expecting White to impress her, but also placing faith in his ability to lead the team.
    • Green's Sidequests have you chasing a mirage of Green, where every time you catch him his voice echoes "again", as the level expands and ultimately concludes at a swimming pool. In life, Green was the leader and mentor of the group, though he was also remorseless, stubborn, and egocentric. He in particular placed high expectations on White and chose him as his protégé over Red, as White would be more compliant and easily molded by Green's non-stop training. The swimming pool at the end of Green's levels symbolizes the location where White finally rebelled and laid waste to Green. Their dynamic persists in death as White remains under Green's thumb, and Green expects for him and White to continue their conflict until the end times.
