  • All of the HYDRA codes that their goons tried to reactivate the Asset with are meaningful.
    • "velveteen" evokes The Velveteen Rabbit, in which a boy loves his stuffed rabbit so much it became real. The Asset (an object, the Fist of HYDRA) became Barnes (a real human) through his (initially platonic) mutual dedication to Steve, as well as the care and kindness of his mission-assists.
    • "спи, малютка" (sleep, child): The Asset obeys HYDRA in a childlike manner, spends his existence rotating between cryosleep and brief bouts of wakefulness, after which he's wiped and has to be re-taught certain things. Barnes also acknowledges that while the body is old, the consciousness that began with his mission to protect Steve is young.
    • "sputnik": A Russian scientific creation, named after the Russian word for "natural satellite". Barnes serves as Steve's satellite ("s-" + "putnik" = "fellow traveler"), both because he literally follows Steve around and because the two of them are Fish out of Temporal Water, having "traveled" from World War One to the modern day.
    • "Petrushka": A puppet character, made famous by a Russian ballet by Igor Stravinsky. Similar to the dissonant shriek in the Winter Soldier's theme that heralds his sudden appearance, Petrushka's appearance onstage is heralded with a famous chord.
  • Barnes' reading material are thematically appropriate, too. He has a habit of not referring to media he consumes by name, which makes it doubly this trope, as it requires familiarity with the works to realize what he's talking about in the first place.
    • Frankenstein: Barnes compares himself to the Creature (referring to him as a "constructed man") and thinks he's better because he has a Mission. Barnes himself is also a constructed man made of fragments and assorted parts, physically and mentally. The book is finally named when he throws it at HYDRA goons.
    • His Dark Materials: Barnes thinks he would be nicer to his Pantalaimon, if he had one. Pantalaimon is the protagonist Lyra's companion and daemon, her complement and the opposite part of her soul, inseparable from her. Barnes and Steve are similarly inseparable (because Barnes starts following Steve all the time, and Mission becomes distressed when they're temporarily separated), and Barnes takes it upon himself to make up for Steve's shortcomings and what he sees as gaps in Steve's security measures that he needs to fix.
    • Pride and Prejudice: Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy learns to overcome their first impressions of and deeply-entrenched beliefs about each other and discover the other's hidden true nature. Steve learns to come to terms with the fact that Barnes is not his Bucky anymore, and everything isn't going to be sunshine and rainbows even though Barnes is back from the dead. Barnes learns to unwind, trust, and let go of his paranoia about keeping Steve safe. Darcy and Barnes share a lack of social grace that leads to misunderstandings and conflict as well.
