Throughout the story, Brás dies several times, but always comes back in the next chapter, even if that chapter is after the chapter where he died. However, it's possible all of these were near-death experiences, not actual deaths.
In the bar, Joca might have almost shot Brás, but decided to just get out of there instead of shooting. Or maybe he did shoot and missed somehow. Anyhow, it must have been a situation where it was obvious Brás could have been shot.
While he's in the boat with the old man, Brás might have come very close to drowning, but managed to survive.
While running while attempting to reach Ana, he could have almost been hit by the truck, but managed to miss it and kept running.
After his father's funeral, he might have felt his heart felt like bursting, but he managed to carry on.
While running after his kite as a kid, he could have almost been electrocuted, but missed the wire.
While driving to get to Rio, Brás could have missed the truck, but might have had to go back because, well, there was a truck in the middle of the road.
While confronting Jorge, Jorge probably attempted to stab him, but Brás managed to dodge.
While away from home, the last-minute surgery to remove the tumors in his head could have worked.
When Brás insists on knowing Olinda's profession to get to know her, she quickly snaps at him with a lengthy explanation, though calms down. This is likely a hint that Olinda might be a good friend, but probably not as good as a partner.
Eleven-year-old Brás knows the word "shit". While life at the ranch was harmless, he was probably exposed to some stuff, what with that show of the naked woman.
All of the deaths shown are accidents or attacks. However, at the very end, Brás chooses to die earlier than necessary. It shows how he's made peace with death.
Olinda and Brás were together for seven years, and based on how things went, it likely wasn't a very happy relationship for too long. They were stuck like that for years, possibly, until their last fight.
