Fridge / Bray Wyatt

Fridge Brilliance

  • Combined with Mythology Gag: Bray's confidence going into WrestleMania XXX and the New Orleans crowd's overwhelming support of him makes a lot of sense given that Bray's original storyline hometown in NXT was actually Lafayette, Louisiana.
  • The demon in Bray Wyatt has occasionally implied that he is Satan himself, which puts an interesting spin on the Wyatt Family's feud with Kane in their main roster debut, since Kane has been nicknamed "The Devil's favorite demon." Keep in mind that, at the time the Wyatts were preying on him, Kane was not only suffering from Badass Decay but was also becoming more human-like / face than ever, especially through his teaming up with Daniel Bryan. The Devil must have been pretty disappointed in him, huh? After they spent weeks beating him up and then whisked him off to parts unknown, Kane returned as a heel serving The Authority (which conceivably not only gave Wyatt a connection to the higher-ups but also gave his pupil the power to wreak havoc on a greater scale, while Wyatt was free to do the same on a much more fun personal level), and the Wyatts left him in peace. Guess he learned his lesson.
  • As a Dark Messiah-type figure, it makes perfect sense that he would send his disciples out and separate them from his physical presence because his message could have a broader reach that way. Luke Harper continued down a darker path and went straight to a championship title (which, ironically, has yet to happen for Bray himself), but maintains an Ensemble Dark Horse status for those who like indie wrestlers with some technical chops. Erick Rowan, meanwhile, embraced the fans. So he had indirect influence over a heel and a face while also carving out his own path. Plus if the need ever arose he could reconvene the family together, which did in fact happen.
  • Combined with Genius Bonus: "Seducer, accuser, destroyer" is a description that's also applied to the archangel Samael. That's who Bray Wyatt seems to think he really is. He's even alluded to Samael a couple times on Twitter.
    • Matt Hardy eventually confirmed this in 2018 while wishing Bray a Happy Birthday, of all things, expressing that Samael and "Zenith" (the "true name" of Matt's own "broken"/"woken" essence) have "known each other for an eternity".
  • Could also double as Fridge Horror: Around mid-2015, Bray Wyatt orchestrated a hit-and-run assault on Ryback. Unlike most of his sudden appearances, his Jump Scare didn't signal his approach and no lights went out. Bray simply took out Ryback with a shoulder tackle and hid behind the barricade like Solid Snake. Imagine being attacked by something that hits like a truck, and then when you look up to see who or what it was, there's nothing there. Most wrestlers can't help but gloat in that situation, especially when their victim is visibly unable to retaliate, but Wyatt is like an evil Batman— he truly wants people to believe that he's a malevolent specter of some sort, with the ability to appear and disappear at will.
  • During Bray Wyatt's entrance, hundreds of fans in the crowd will hold up their cell phones and light up the arena like stars in a dark sky. Wyatt refers to them as his "fireflies." Literal fireflies are indigenous to marshy, swampy areas, which is where Bray is said (and shown, through vignettes) to live. Likewise, Jerry Lawler, while he was a babyface on Raw, was usually the most vocal on the commentary team about how eerie and strange it is to see all of Bray's "fireflies" under his almost hypnotic influence. Makes sense, since he's the only commentator in WWE who has first-hand experience with the Wyatt Family's sadistic tactics, from when they tried to physically torture him to psychologically torture John Cena. It's only natural that he'd be the most disturbed by Wyatt's ability to gain followers at will.
  • Bray utilizes a move that's probably best described as a lunging cross-body block, but really, he just kind of hurls himself at his opponent at full speed. The commentators note that it's as if Bray Wyatt doesn't care about his own safety and just wants to hurt whoever he's in the ring with, and Bray has been hinted to be a demon of some sort, using Husky Harris as a vessel. If that's true, of course he wouldn't care about possibly damaging a body that's not even his to begin with. He could probably find another if he had to. Also, obviously, his body's huge. Of course hurling 300 pounds at an opponent full-speed would be effective.
  • At SummerSlam 2019, Wyatt's new persona of "The Fiend" came out carrying a lantern. Which was in the mouth of a decapitated Bray's head with its eyes stitched shut. Not only is this terrifying, but it's also a bit of a Call-Back. In the first Firefly Fun House, Bray said he'd never return to being "that pathetic slob loser" before taking a chainsaw to a standee of his past self. The severed head continues that idea: The old Bray Wyatt is dead, and the Fiend is making sure the world knows it.
    • Even more poignant Fridge Brilliance would be the fact that his first in-ring opponent in the new persona was Finn Bálor. The very same guy who, in the previous Summerslam, defeated Bray using a similar Dark Alter Ego.
    • Also consider the first lyric of his theme: "Catching flies in his mouth." His mouth is wide open around the lantern, and there are many fireflies in the audience to catch...
    • Further still, what does Bray tell his fireflies on the Firefly Fun House? "I'll always light the way." And now his head's being used as a lantern...
  • The Fiend's abilities to make a wrestler he fights revert to a previous form sounds strange...until you remember something. Bray became like this after being dunked into the Lake of Reincarnation...whose main gimmick is that its waters can turn a wrestler to a former (random) gimmick. And WOKEN Matt did state that perhaps the Lake was responsible for Bray's state. In other words, the Fiend is carrying the powers of the Lake of Reincarnation on him, only in a dark corruptible form. Oh, Crap!...
  • Why was Goldberg capable of pinning The Fiend so easily when every single wrestler before him was corrupted? If you go with the kayfabe, it's because The Fiend prays on the weaknesses of others, and Goldberg either has no weakness to exploit or he just doesn't care for the Fiend's BS.
  • The entirety of the Firefly Fun House match is Fridge Brilliance incarnate, deconstructing John Cena's entire career. This article breaks it down.

Fridge Horror

  • Look at this picture of Bray. This was taken during Extreme Rules 2014, around the time that the Creepy Child started singing. What's so horrible about it? He looks scared. If one remembers that Bray's body is actually a vessel, the demon may have left his body, and Bray could see how much of a monster he had become.
    • And then he gets right back into it at the end of the match as WYATTWINSLOL, proving that that spirit that possessed Husky Harris is a mean, sadistic son of a bitch.
  • Bray Wyatt's character has come up with several different origin stories that seem to conflict with each other. Keep in mind that Husky Harris's last appearance in WWE was getting his skull punted in by Randy Orton. What if Bray Wyatt is Husky Harris – or, more specifically, a brain-damaged Husky Harris that can't remember what happened to him, and "Sister Abigail" was a vision he had while comatose?
  • If Wyatt's Twitter is to be believed, you have to be deceased to enter the Firefly Fun House...how the hell did Seth Rollins enter it?! Made worse several months later, with Finn Bálor stating directly on NXT that he doesn't have a heart.
    • It gets worse. Wrestlemania 36 has him utterly mentally break down John Cena and erases him out of existence. Repeat: John Cena. John. Freaking. Cena.
