Fridge / Black Adam (2022)

Fridge Brilliance

  • Cyclone in the comics has a Wicked Witch of Oz costume. This wouldn't fit, practically: she's not wicked, nor is she a witch (she has nanobots). She is however introduced riding a bicycle like Miss Gulch, and her backpack looks like one of the flying monkeys from the 1939 movie.
  • Dr Fate’s magic appears in the form of prisms.
    • Prisms are crystalline objects set in a fixed form, which can represent order.
    • Prisms are used in vision, to develop glasses and scopes (periscopes, cameras, telescopes, etc). It’s an appropriate motif for a superhero with supernatural vision.
    • Prisms are great tools to focus light, and Fate’s attacks are light-based.
  • Another symbol Dr Fate uses is an ankh. In Egypt ankhs represent eternal life, fitting him as an immortal sorcerer.
  • Amanda Waller teaming up with Superman means she no longer sees Superman as a threat, thanks to Adam's arrival. Nothing like a common enemy/threat to forge a new alliance. Crosses into Fridge Horror when you realize Superman has now been put in a position where Waller can use him for her own gain.
  • In SHAZAM!, we were told Black Adam was corrupted by the Seven Deadly Sins, necessitating his imprisonment. But in the flashback scenes, the Sins are nowhere to be found. Seems like Continuity Snarl unless you consider that Teth-Adam killing the king out of revenge instead of justice would fall under Wrath's purview.
  • Ishmael's main sin is pride, in wishing to be a ruler simply based on his royal heritage and not caring if he actually is worthy or not. Thus his form as SABBAC is the closest in appearance to the Deadly Sin Pride, with horns and a demonic appearance.
  • The demons empowering SABBAC are only six in number, in contrast to the Wizard Council's seven. What's six three times in a row?
    • It's also possible that similar to Sivana, the sin that matches Ishamel the most (in this case, Pride) is already possessing him.
  • In the Brazilian Portuguese dub, Black Adam is voiced by Garcia Junior, although The Rock's usual Brazilian VA is Guilherme Briggs. The reason of this change is revealed in The Stinger: Briggs has a Role Reprise voicing Superman.
  • Of course Teth-Adam is in no hurry to reunite with his deceased family in the afterlife. He's the "mightiest of mortals" after all.
  • The throne of Kahndaq, in modern times, stands alone and away from the people of Kahndaq. The throne is a symbol of past corrupt leaders who turned their back against Kahndaq civilians.
  • Black Adam being able to stand toe-to-toe with Doctor Fate might be a case of Adaptational Wimp and/or Worfing, which is nothing new in superhero cinema — but it's also possible that this was deliberately done by Kent. Kent can see in the future, so he may have known that they would need Black Adam to defeat SABBAC and purposefully held back during their fight so he would remain free and accessible to help.
  • Black Adam has a musical motif similar to Ocean Master’s. That’s fine, since both are anti-heroic characters who lost their loved ones and find a measure of redemption. And both briefly held the thrones of their nations.
  • The capital city of Kahndaq, which emerged around the ruins of the ancient king's palace, has been named Shiruta, seemingly after Adam's wife (and Hurut's mother). This would seem to have been intended by Kahndaq's people as a massive Take That! at the hated king, as well as a tribute to their ancient Champion.
  • Amanda Waller's role working with the Justice Society and Superman struck a lot of fans as odd given her questionable morals, especially compared to the heroes she's seemingly allied with. But, given the debacles in Midway City and Corto Maltese, as well as Project Butterfly and her public exposure, it's likely that the American government has drastically reduced Waller's authority; being made to liaison with the very superheroes she once considered a threat is Waller's punishment for past public failures.
Fridge Horror
  • The ARGUS base where Adam is imprisoned is filled with stasis pods. Now think about all the metahumans that haven't appeared in any films. Think about how we've got no confirmation on whether previously seen characters like Killer Croc, King Shark or Cheetah will ever reappear. Hell, let's take this to a meta level and consider all the DC films that Warner Bros. cancelled, with all the heroes and villains they would have introduced.
    • Speaking of stasis pods, just how many of the prisoners are truly evil, and how many are mistaken for being evil? Could some of those people be innocent and Waller mistook them for threats?
    • Some of them could be complete innocents, stored by Waller until she has a use for them.
  • Despite Doctor Fate's premonition saying he'll die in an unrelated way, Karim is actually very lucky to have survived the climax. When he was lying with a gunshot wound, Karim is told by Doctor Fate that he'll die electrocuted, not from this wound. During the climax, Karim attacks the zombies while boasting his own fate means he doesn't risk anything now. Except a previous discussion between Doctor Fate and Hawkman implies the future foreseen by the latter doesn't always happen (which is confirmed when Hawkman survives the climatic battle, which he shouldn't according to Doctor Fate). Which means that, by acting recklessly because he knew beforehand about his future death, Karim's behavior during the climax could have derailed his actual fate, so his death during this scene would have been plausible.
  • Just the fact that Amanda Waller knows enough about SHAZAM’s powers to correctly deduce that Black Adam can be depowered by saying the magic word. Up until this point the only superheroes with those powers were a bunch of orphaned kids. That woman has eyes everywhere.
  • Should Teth-Adam learn that Billy was able to share his strength with his family, he will not take this revelation lying down. After all, where was that when Hurut was killed? Where was this information from the Council when they let his son die?
