Go To

Times where somebody is Forced to Watch an atrocity in Fan Works.

Crossovers
  • All For Luz: In Chapter 21, Luz kills Charlie by ripping out their heart. She then shows it to them, crushing it before their eyes.
  • Bridges Burned (Mama Always Told Me That I Should Play Nice. But She Never Met You) makes this a key part of Marinette's revenge against her Fair-Weather Friends. They all Easily Condemned her in hopes of earning Lila's favor, as her Celebrity Lies had them convinced she'd be more than happy to use her connections to help them achieve their dream careers. Turns out that Marinette actually knows a lot of people from all around the world, and she has them start visiting Francoise Dupont so she can introduce them to her real friends... in front of her classmates. For instance, she has Lois Lane come in and introduces her to Aurore, recommending her for an internship at the Daily Planet while Alya can only gape in shock.
  • Code Prime (Code Geass & Transformers): The SAZ Massacre is made worse due to Megatron using a Pretender drone impersonating as Princess Euphemia to ignite the said massacre and having Soundwave, pretending to be Charles, ordering the Britannian soldiers and Knights of the Round to attack the Japanese. And poor Euphie (who was captured by Airachnid) was forced to watch the tragedy unfold.
    • The Decepticons make a deliberate effort to drag all the Britannian nobles outside and make them watch as the Nemesis obliterates Pendragon down to the bedrock.
  • An Extraordinary Journey:
    • Athena goes through this twice. First, the Wraith murder Hera in front of her. Then the Furlings chain her to a wall and make her watch as her adopted daughter is forced to become the First Slayer by them sealing a demon inside of her.
    • Kathy plans to torture Angel in this fashion before she kills them.
  • A Fake Hero: At one point, Shirou is forcibly pulled back from the front line in order to treat his injured hands. While he's getting that necessary medical treatment, he witnesses how several members of the student council are still fighting without him, gradually getting overwhelmed. Despite how he manages to offer some support from the sidelines, encouraging them to win, Shirou still blames himself for not being able to help more directly or save them sooner.
  • The God Empress of Ponykind (My Little Pony & Warhammer): During the Siege of Manehattan, Dawn Sparkle defies Nightmare Moon's offer of mercy and challenges the Mad God to a duel. The scene cuts to the next days where she confesses to Celestia as she lies dying that she lost, but Nightmare Moon kept her alive long enough to watch the Traitors raze Manehattan and slaughter the civilians that failed to escape.
  • Hunters of Justice (Justice League & RWBY): Brainiac utterly trounces teams RWBY and JNPR when they try to personally stop him. Afterwards, they are treated to front row seats as Braniac bottles the last city of Vale and immediately destroys the entire planet of Remnant afterwards while all they can do is look on in silent horror.
  • My Hero Academia: Unchained Predator (Doom (2016), Darksiders, & My Hero Academia): Throughout most of the Steel Sabers arc, the captured heroes, UA students and partygoers in the ballroom are forced to watch through the main screen as the Slayer viciously and mercilessly slaughters the entire Steel Sabers organization to prevent their deaths, and for killing 246 heroes. In Chapter 18, both the hostages and Wolfram's gunmen are nervous and struggling to maintain any form of composition after the Slayer viciously and gruesomely offs Nine and his lieutenants out of fear he will show up and kill them as well. When the Slayer shows up to kill off all the gunmen, the partygoers panic and stampede past him in an effort to avoid being on his list. When the partygoers fled the line of fire, the UA students and captured heroes couldn't do anything but watch as the Slayer made quick work of Wolfram's goons before heading off to the roof, leaving the UA students and captured heroes alone.
  • The Shattering of Oz (Return to Oz & Wicked): Annoyed at Fiyero's defiance, the Nome King decides to break his spirit by forcing him to watch the magically-accelerated forest growth crushing the cities of Oz.
  • Weight of the World (Hetalia: Axis Powers & RWBY):
    • During a flashback, the Atlas scientists hook Canada up to machines that track his vitals to test how his body reacts to stress. They then force Canada to watch as America is vivisected. America is cut open from ribcage to pelvis to test his Healing Factor. Canada freaks out, and one of the scientists claims he may pass out or suffer a heart attack as America falls unconscious.
    • Doctor Polendina makes a captured America watch a recording of Penny's death during the Tournament. He sets the footage to replay over and over and leaves.

Amphibia

Animorphs

  • All Assorted Animorphs AUs: In "What if they were caught during their first mission?", the Yeerks kill or harm several people close to Tobias in an attempt to force him to demorph. He doesn't.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

  • In The Chong Sheng Trilogy's third installment, Chiang pulls this by torturing Katara with acupuncture and forcing Zuko to watch. Initially it's to make her tell him about the White Lotus' plans since she just succeeded Pakku as the Grand Master of Water, but evolves into the Kick the Dog variety once it's clear she no longer has the capacity to divulge any information. Bonus points in that Chiang makes it clear what he intends to do to her once she passes out. He doesn't succeed, as Hakoda and others still loyal to Zuko pull a Big Damn Heroes moment out of the proverbial fire.
  • In The Legend of Korra fanfic Forced to Be a Family, Lin's father was murdered before her eyes by triad members for killing one of their own in the line of duty.

Buffyverse

  • In Worlds Apart, Buffy spends a few months 'watching' Angel in her dreams while he's trapped in the Council's dungeon, although she assumes that she is picturing him in Hell and Angel assumes that the sense of Buffy is her coming to him from Heaven.

CSI

  • Face The Music has Grissom tortured by Reggie Shelling and Ruben Denaglio. Grissom escapes, but near the end of the fic, he's recaptured after Shelling, who escaped the first time, uses Sara as bait. Shelling starts in on Sara, then Grissom convinces Shelling to focus on him so he'll stop hurting Sara, meaning they're both forced to watch at various points.

Danganronpa

  • Alternative Class Despair: Being forced to watch their love interest die before their eyes drives Kyoko Laughing Mad as they fall into Despair.
  • Choose Your Own Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc: In addition to having to watch Monokuma subject any rule-breakers to Detentions, the survivors are forced to watch a recording of Jin Kirigiri's execution.
  • Kazuichi Strangelove: Whenever Kazuichi manages to prevent Mikan from killing anyone after she's infected by the Despair Disease, Monokuma gets upset enough that he declares that Kazuichi won't be infected until after he's watched everyone else succumb.
  • An especially cruel example of this occurs in this fanmade execution for Rantaro Amami—before his death, Rantaro is forced to watch all twelve of his sisters die right in front of him. While he tries to break free to save the youngest, she dies before he can.

The DCU

  • Hellsister Trilogy: In "The Apokolips Agenda", Darkseid drags his wife Tigra to the torture chamber where Orion is being held, and he forces her to watch as Desaad tortures the Anti-Life Equation out of her son.

Dragon Ball

Fire Emblem

Fullmetal Alchemist

  • One Full Metal Alchemist 2003 fanfic involves Envy employing this method on Edward, as he and Sloth engage in some kinky and graphic 'bonding', which proves to be a fairly effective way of squicking out poor Ed, especially since this fic is set in the first anime continuity, where Sloth is actually a resurrected version of Ed's mom Trisha. And to add insult to injury, Envy transforms into his and Ed's father, Hohenheim!

Fusion Fic

  • When Medley rescues Rainbow Dash in chapter 11 of Ace Combat: The Equestrian War, Gilda puts Medley through excruciating pain, while Rainbow is forced to watch. Had she moved, Gilda would rip Medley's wings off. In the end, she ''only'' breaks them.
  • In the Fallout: Equestria universe, memory orbs — magical devices which allow unicorns to experience the collected memory within — cannot be exited until the memory has been played completely. No matter how horrific — or embarrassing — the memory is, once you've activated the orb, you're forced to watch (and feel, and smell, and taste) it all.
    • In a much more direct way, Cognitum forces Blackjack to watch her annihilating several peaceful settlements in order to wriggle some crucial information out of her. Despite a heavy death toll, Blackjack holds back, because she knows that with the information Cognitum will do much worse, but she breaks when her friends and loved ones are targeted next.

Godzilla

Gravity Falls

  • All The World's a Toybox: For Pacifica's game, Bill Cipher turns her into an animated doll who's forced to follow the commands of her Abusive Parents. Halo

  • Subverted in Red vs Blue: Revenge of the Robots. Unless Sarge gives O'malley what he wants, he'll be forced to watch Wyoming not kill Grif. Which, considering how much Sarge hates Grif, is an unbearable torture.

Harry Potter

  • Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality: The martial arts instructor who wouldn't teach Voldemort had to watch his students be tortured and killed.
  • In What if Snape Died, Voldemort didn't know the prophecy, but that just delayed (for a few years) the moment Harry Potter would become the Boy-Who-Lived. Some of his Death Eaters forced James to watch as he tried to kill Harry. Since Lily did sacrifice herself after all, the Killing Curse came back at him like in the book series.

Hetalia: Axis Powers

  • In the Dark Fic All He Ever Wanted, a captured Austria is forced to watch as Prussia tortures and rapes his beautiful ex-wife Hungary "for his sake".
  • In An Asian's Harem of Asians, Japan sexually enslaves all of the Asian nations (OC's included). The only one that he won't directly violate is his little sister Taiwan, but he still abuses her via stripping her naked alongside the others and forcing her to watch how he either rapes their other siblings or makes them rape each other.
  • In Crown Prince, Prussia and the aforementioned Crown Prince aka the future Frederick the Great are forced to witness the execution of Frederick's best friend (and maybe more) Lieutenant Hans Hermann von Katte. Prussia first vomits in public and then suffers hallucinations for several hours, while Frederick has a days-long Heroic BSoD.
  • Grey Skies Universe: Alfred is forced to attend the hanging of George Washington, his Parental Substitute in this continuity. He collapses in shock and grief.
  • The Weakest Link: This is inflicted upon the captive nations far too many times, but one standout example involves Fletcher re-opening all of Latvia's old scars in front of the other three. All of the other nations are sent video tapes depicting all of the torture, ending with various ransom demands.

Kim Possible

  • Dead Man Switch, the Lorwardians forced the leaders and governments of Earth (and a few selected civilians) to watch 15 girls get beheaded and have the records replayed over Earth's media networks to put them in their place, as part of their annual tribute to the Lorwardian Empire. And they've been at it for 20 years until the start of the fanfic.

The Legend of Zelda

Lost Girl

  • A horrifying version happens in Faeral. Dyson has, for complicated but well-explained reasons, gone psychotic and previously tried to rape Lauren. When Bo is talking to him later, he is confused as to why she is angry over it. He then concludes that as a Succubus, she wants to watch him rape Lauren. Bo damn near kills him on the spot. He later breaks out of his cell, hell-bent on raping Lauren in front of Bo. Bo finally snaps, and gives him a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown to make him stop.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

Mega Man

Miraculous Ladybug

  • The Cosmos: Despite having figured out that Lila is a Manipulative Bitch, Nino doesn't feel as though any of his peers would actually listen if he tried warning them, especially since they already turned against Marinette for her Cassandra Truths. This leaves him watching helplessly as they fall further and further under her spell, unwilling to risk the potential backlash.
  • The Lament Series (ChaoticNeutral):
    • Gabriel's Lament: Part of what makes the results of Gabriel's Wish a Self-Inflicted Hell is that the Control Freak loses most of his ability to control events around him. In the new reality, he no longer has the Butterfly Brooch, but somebody else becomes Hawk Moth in his place... and Emelie uses the Peacock Pin to become a superheroine fighting the new villain. On top of this, he overcompensated for his lack of control in other areas by coming down even harder upon Adrien, causing his son to grow so resentful of his father that he gets perma-akumatized into Chat Blanc.
    • In Chloé's Lament, Adrien can do nothing but protest uselessly as Chloé uses the power of Miracle Queen to Mind Control Ladybug, stripping her and him of their Miraculouses, and plots to use the Wish to remake the world as she sees fit. However, his refusal to rule Paris alongside her and repeatedly calling her out on her selfishness does influence her to ultimately make a Wish that delivers some Laser-Guided Karma...

My Hero Academia

  • In Bury Me In Your Memories, Midoriya and Aizawa's captor has Aizawa tied up so he can't look away while he rapes Midoriya.

  • The Wards Of UA:
    • One of the ways Shinsou was tortured by his captors was that they made him use his Brainwashing Quirk to make Eri walk to her "appointments" with the doctors who experimented on her powers, then back to her room afterwards. They frequently made him stay and watch as she was medically tortured.
    • After Shinsou wasn't able to make a police officer talk with his Quirk, he was forced to watch him get brutalized instead.
    • Eri was forced to watch videos of Shinsou being beaten up in order to make her Quirk accumulate emotions. On top of this, Chisaki once partially unraveled Shinsou's hand in front of her.

  • Yesterday Upon The Stair: Shigaraki makes Izuku watch as All for One takes poor Ragdoll's Quirk away from them. This winds up working against the villains, however, as All for One's victim takes the opportunity to silent signal to Midoriya where All for One's weaknesses are.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

  • Aftermath of a Fallen Star: While it didn't actually happen, one of the conspirators notes that if Spike had been with Twilight when they assassinated her, they would have killed him first, making her watch the baby dragon die.
  • Inner Demons: After Queen!Twilight Sparkle performs her Face–Heel Turn, her canonical Clingy Jealous Girl attitude towards her brother is taken straight into Villainous Incest territory. She kidnaps Cadence, strips her power, and then locks her up, forcing her to watch remotely as Twilight makes herself appear like Cadence before making love to Shining Armor.
  • The Nuptialverse: Metamorphosis reveals that the first time Princess Celestia and Luna confronted Discord, he summoned all of their blood relatives and slaughtered them in front of the pair in various horrific ways. He then made the pair immortal so that they couldn't kill themselves in their grief.
  • In the Pony POV Series, Discord forces Rainbow Dash to watch her hometown be Driven to Madness right in front of her. Does he need to? No, this version of Discord does it for fun.
  • You Obey by Kalash93 contains a very interesting and somewhat meta spin on this trope.

  • A Father's Wrath: In this AU, Orochimaru is Naruto's father. This does not stop Minato from using the newborn Naruto as a vessel for the Kyuubi. Orochimaru tries to stop it, but is held back by Jiraiya and Tsunade. This only adds to his hatred of his former teammates, as not only did they betray him, they went along with the Sandaime's efforts to hide the truth and let Naruto grow up grow up as an outcast.
  • In Naruto: the Secret Songs of the Ninja Kakashi and Naruto get captured by an old enemy of Kakashi who is out for revenge. He specifically invokes this trope by torturing Naruto in front of Kakashi, explaining that he's studied Kakashi for years and knows that hurting his comrades will make him suffer far more than anything you can do to him. Defied by Naruto when he tells the torturer to Bring It and tells Kakashi not to give in, no matter what.

Professor Layton

  • Beautiful Nightmare features a version of Anton who is actually a vampire doing this to the Professor, man-handling an increasingly more and more terrified Luke in front of him. Anton was originally planning on turning Luke while the Professor looked on and then sic Luke on his former mentor but when Layton's Papa Wolf instincts kicked in, making his blood smell delicious, Anton decided he'd much rather feed on him and used the stated scenario.

It worked, and Maria didn't speak to Shadow for five years.
    • As punishment for supposedly rebelling against him, the Commander of G.U.N. has Gerald watch as his soldiers kill Maria.

SpongeBob SquarePants

Star Trek

  • The TNG fanfic Big Doors uses this in its take on "Chain Of Command", in which Tasha Yar is captured along with Picard; in addition to everything that happens to Picard canonically, Gul Madred also tortures Tasha in front of Picard and forces him to watch as a further tactic to break his will. This is enough to make Picard consider giving in for a moment, but he ultimately decide not to because he knows Tasha would want him to continue resisting their captors no matter what it means for her.
  • Subverted in Frostbite. In the first interrogation scene Dalsh Ruul has Senior Chief Athezra Darrod brought in and tells Tess Phohl to talk or he'll kill Athezra. Tess tells him that not only will it not make her talk, but that if he follows through Eleya will strangle him with his own intestines. Ruul gives up on that approach and resorts to torturing Tess with a painstick.

Star Wars

  • Writers seem to like playing with the idea of Leia being forced to watch Han being tortured on the scan grid in The Empire Strikes Back, though there's no canon evidence one way or the other. One Night On Bespin and Therapy are two examples.
