The Gunman is a 2015 action film based on the novel The Prone Gunman by Jean-Patrick Manchette and directed by Pierre Morel (who also directed District 13, the first Taken movie, and From Paris with Love). It stars Sean Penn, Idris Elba, Ray Winstone, Mark Rylance, and Javier Bardem.

In 2006, a professional assassin working for the government named Jim Terrier is hired to take out the Mining Minister in the Congo, forcing him to abandon his girlfriend and go into hiding while the assassination triggers more chaos within the Congo. 8 years later, Jim comes out of hiding and soon discovers that there's a price being put on his head. He must now try and reconnect with his old team and girlfriend while avoiding not only the men hired to kill him, but also his brain damage that has been caused by his time as an assassin.

This film provides examples of:

  • The Alcoholic: When Jim contacts him after 8 years, Felix starts drinking heavily and rarely appears sober. He dies with a drink in his hand.
  • Blood from the Mouth: The protagonist periodically vomits blood – even though he is diagnosed with a form of traumatic injury to his brain.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Annie. Every time she enters the scene, she's partially nude, even when taken hostage.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Jim kills a woman who was helping set him up, seemingly just by punching her too hard. On the villain side, Cox threatens Annie repeatedly and in deadly earnest.
