Tropes for the film:

  • Clipboard of Authority: This eases Henry Sikorsky (Lloyd) in doctor-impersonating.
  • Dream Team: Spoofed. The four characters are dysfunctional psychiatric patients who have to overcome their various crippling neuroses, not to mention their inherent dislike for each other, to reveal the truth after they're framed for a murder by corrupt police officers.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Billy (choleric), Henry (melancholic), Jack (sanguine), Albert (phlegmatic).
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Billy is constantly on edge and flies into explosive fits of anger over pretty much anything. It's why he's in the hospital to begin with.
  • Losing Horns: When Jack's former business partner rats him out to the police, Jack yanks his chain about a major deal the business was expecting, and makes this sound.
  • Misfit Mobilization Moment: Albert snaps the team out of their collective Heroic BSoD with one word: "shithead". This is the first thing he says in the film that isn't just parroting what he's heard on TV.
  • Napoleon Delusion: Jack believes himself to be the second coming of Jesus.
  • Only Sane Man: For a given definition of "sane" as he is still a mental patient but Billy, even with his anger issues, is by far the most lucid and capable of the group and the one most able to get by. Truth in Television, as people with acute mental illness can be quite lucid and functional for the most part.
  • Ripped from the Phone Book: Done by Billy (Keaton) when he and the group when he and the group are searching for their missing psychiatrist in a hospital. One of the group, Henry, does note that what Billy did is vandalism, but Billy shrugs it off and it's never brought up again.
  • Shout-Out:
    • In the group therapy scene Billy compares a nurse's appearance to Luca Brasi, calls Henry "Dr. Demento" and quotes Casey at the Bat ("No joy in Mudville").
    • A man getting ready to tow the team's car calls Jack, who has stripped to his underwear, Tarzan.
  • Speaks in Shout-Outs: Albert is a mental patient who loves watching TV, particularly sports, and only communicates by mimicking what he's heard on television.
  • Wham Line: "He called me a shithead!"
