Tropes for the film:

  • The Film of the Book: Based on Anaïs Nin's book of the same name.
  • Name and Name: Henry & June.
  • No Antagonist: The plot is character driven. Each individual is portrayed as complex, with their own flaws and strengths. While June is very unstable, she is a catalyst and not a villain; and the other characters do their own share of deceptive, self-serving things anyway.
  • Tagline: "A true adventure more erotic than any fantasy".
  • Tarot Troubles: A tarot reading is in progress at the party where June returns. They turn up the Death card and June quite correctly points out "That could be good luck, too." It's not, though.
  • Where Are They Now: The movie ends with text screens saying that Henry and Anaïs remained friends to the end of their lives; both wrote many books about June. June became a social worker in Queens, New York. Hugo became a filmmaker, and it was by his request that Anais' unexpurgated story remain unpublished until after his death. he died in 1985.
