Tropes for the film:

  • As Himself: Alex Honnold, who is the subject of the film.
  • Don't Look Down: In a Q&A session in the DVD Bonus Content, Alex is asked if he ever looks down. He replies that he has to look where he puts his feet, so he is continuously looking down.
  • "I Can't Look!" Gesture: The movie is about Alex Honnold climbing El Capitan (a 3,200 foot granite cliff) without ropes or assistance. When Honnold is negotiating the "Boulder Problem", one of the most difficult stages, the ground level camera man turns away after leaving the camera pointing in the right direction. The camera crew are stated to all be experienced climbers, so he would know better than the audience how great Honnold's risk of falling to his death was at that point.
  • Nintendo Hard: Climbing 3000 feet of vertical rock is hard. Doing it without a rope is incredibly harder. Alex has to train rather hard to make it happen.
  • Tagline: "Live Beyond Fear".
