- City Mouse: Ernie Souchak is a reporter who has a pressing need to get of Chicago, before corrupt city officials can arrange an unpleasant accident for him. The Sun-Times editor, for reasons known only to himself, sends him into the mountains of Wyoming.
- Dogged Nice Guy: Ernie, is this. To be fair, Souchak is no Bluto, but after the third or fourth time Dr. Porter tells him she's not interested, the viewer would think he'd get the memo.
- Intrepid Reporter: Ernie Souchak. Judging by his vendetta against a Sleazy Politician, his tendency to pursue a story beyond what might be considered prudent or safe, and the snarky tone of his writing, he is likely based on real-life Chicago columnist Mike Royko.
