This Canadian short film was from 2017, starring Sasha Lane as Rebecca. It was based very loosely on a novel by Canadian writer Marie-Claire Blais, and directed by Meryam Joobeur.
Tropes:
- Ambiguously Absent Parent: There are no men in the community. As a result, it's left unclear who the fathers of the children are, or where they went. It's possible that like Rebecca they were conceived by rape or otherwise that the women were in bad relationships, explaining their animus toward men and making their own sons leave after they get older.
- Ambiguous Situation: It's left unexplained what the community is about, why it formed and even its location.
- Child by Rape: Rebecca it turns out was conceived by rape. Her mother finds it hard looking at her increasingly, since she's got some of his appearance.
- Does Not Like Men: This is implied to be the case for the community's women, as there are no men among them, and they make their own sons leave after the've grown toward manhood.
- Dreadlock Rasta: By the end of the film, Rebecca's made her hair into dreadlocks, signifying that she now defies her community's demand for conformity. She leaves afterward to live her way.
- Half-Breed Discrimination: Rebecca is the only biracial person in her community, seen as neither sufficiently black nor white for them as a result.
- Lady Land: The community does not have any men, with boys forced to leave when they grow older.
- Maligned Mixed Marriage: Rebecca is stopped from dancing with a white boy she likes. It's not about her being biracial explicitly, though the fact members of her community don't like her heritage implies this.
- No Fathers Allowed: The community does not have any men, so the childrens' fathers aren't involved with their lives. In the case of Rebecca, this is because she'd been conceived by rape, but in the others' cases it isn't clear why.
- Slut-Shaming: Rebecca is angrily denounced as a slut by the women in her community as a result of wearing a shirt she made thin enough to clearly display her breasts underneath.
- Vapor Wear: Near the end, Rebecca wears a see-through shirt she had made, appalling the community members. It's clear she's not wearing any bra underneath.
- Where the Hell Is Springfield?: The location where the film is set isn't clear. However, it seems to be somewhere in the American South, judging by the scenery and accents.
