While not a true AU, the author does disregard the series creators' confirmation that there was no homophobia in the series' world for the sake of Adaptational Angst Upgrade and a Dark and Troubled Past for Victor. Despite the drama stemming from Victor's relationship with his father, the story manages to maintain the hopeful tone of the series amidst the occasionally harsh dose of reality (with a sprinkling of sex scenes as an apology for all the angst). One of the best parts of the fic is that the author does a fantastic job of writing the skating sequences, resulting in several audience-pleasing moments. Fair warning, however. The series is a Door Stopper, with 210 chapters as of September 7th, 2017.
