Half the Man I Used to Be But Twice the Man I Was by pengke

  • Recommended by: error-cascade
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: An AU where Tony Stark became an amputee in Afghanistan and decided to keep his identity as Iron Man secret.
  • Comments: This is one of the best fics as far as canon rewrites go. The character development is superb and the primary focus but the plot is also worthwhile. It explores the prickly MCU team dynamics without character bashing. The non-linear narrative is fresh instead of confusing. The story contains several plot points that are reminiscent of the comics without alienating any MCU-only readers. And if that doesn't convince you...Tony Stark with sick kids. C'mon. You want to read it.

The Lives You Save by DestielsDestiny

  • Recommended by: error-cascade
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Once, there was an idea. Or, Six Times Nick Fury could have helped an Avenger but didn’t (except when he sort of did), and the one time he helped them all.
  • Comments: If the synopsis was insufficiently compelling, let me mention that this is the story wherein Nick Fury punches two...rather irritating figures in the face.

love always wakes the dragon by opensummer

  • Recommended by: error-cascade
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A one-shot about Natasha Romanov, Clint Barton, and their unusual friendship in the face of constant brutality.
  • Comments: The story is minimalist, cutting, and utterly brilliant. (Contains brief mentions of past Clint/Natasha).

Much of you is repetition by everythingispoetry

  • Recommended by: error-cascade
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Clint Barton recovers, oh-so-slowly, from the aftermath of Loki's mind control. Unexpectedly, Tony Stark helps. A lot.

History Lessons by Memory Dragon

  • Recommended by: therewriter
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Steve hates modern television shows and history. Tony is determined to remedy both of those, provided they can survive each other.
  • Comments: Meant to be pre-slash, as per the author, but nothing really happens between Steve and Tony (as also noted by the author). Aside from that, it’s an excellent friendship story told with great symbolism from movies and TV shows and has quality angst and fluff. The dialogue is simultaneously humorous and somewhat heartbreaking. Even though the fic is about the development of Steve and Tony’s relationship from teammates to close friends, all of the Avengers (and Rhodey and Pepper) make appearances, and it’s awesome!

Arc Tremors by MountainRose

  • Recommended by: therealrumena
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Tony's light had flickered out in the aftermath of the fight with the Chitauri, but his team was there and, hey, he'd just been to space, give a guy some slack. The next morning they accepted, but when he collapses weeks later, they're not going to let him brush it off again, and neither is JARVIS.
  • Comments: Focuses a lot on Tony's arc reactor (as the name would suggest) and explores the aftermath of damage and trauma inflicted directly after the film. It's family bonds within the Avengers tower—there's nothing not to love here.

A Flerken May Look at a God by Reflected Skies

  • Recommended by: Tiggerific
  • Status: Complete/Oneshot
  • Synopsis: What if Goose had been on the Helicarrier when Loki was brought onboard?
  • Comments: This is the single funniest fic I've read in a long time, and saying anything more than that will spoil all the surprises.

Agent Coulson, Patron Saint of SHIELD by Agent Malkere

  • Recommended by: SubversionStation
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Being dead was odd but, overall, slightly underwhelming.
  • Comments: A short oneshot centered on Coulson right after dying. Great for any Coulson fans.

Somebody's hero by Eternal She-Wolf

  • Recommended by: Lyra_Dhani
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Tony Stark is six when he learns that nobody will come for him. If he wants to be rescued, he'll have to take care of it himself. Part 1 of the Kidnapping is a Bad Thing, Tony series.
  • Comments: Tony Stark-centric

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

Works in Progress by Agnes_Bean

  • Recommended by: error-cascade
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: After the Avengers, Tony Stark invites Bruce to live at the tower. Tony Stark may be the first person to treat Bruce normally since the Hulk. Bruce Banner may be falling for him. That doesn't mean a relationship between a self-destructive alcoholic is going to be easy.
  • Pairing: Bruce/Tony

The Great Escape by Vathara

  • Recommended by: Balinia, Dame-Amaryllis
  • Status: Dormant
  • Crossover with: Sekirei
  • Synopsis: The Sekirei Plan goes a bit too far for a usually nice guy... and happens where the Avengers eventually hear about it. This has results. AKA, Minato loses his temper. Manhattan meets super-powered teens in love. JARVIS gets a pen-pal. And Minaka? ...Odds are, he gets popcorn.

  • Comments: Honestly, I can't recommend these highly enough, they are quite simply some of the best crossover fanfictions I've ever read. If you're a fan of both Marvel and Tolkien, then these are a must-read.

The New Recruit, A One-Shot by inkravens45

  • Recommended by dragonwing7
  • Crossover with: Chronicle
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The "Seattle Incident" has attracted the attention of numerous government agencies, including SHIELD. Agent Phil Coulson is sent to investigate, and meets the young and scared Matt Garetty. Over lunch, Coulson hears the story of Matt, Andrew, and Steve, and thus the truth about what happened in Seattle.
  • Comments: A short but sweet story about what might have happened if SHIELD existed in the same world as the movie Chronicle.
