Authors, and Websites

Jack Borroughs

  • Recommended by SubversionStation
  • Comments: An author who has written many great Captain America fics, all of which are worth a read and a few of which have already been recommended below.

quigonejinn

  • Recommended by error-cascade
  • Comments: Fond of slash pairings and the relationships between Steve and his new coworkers.

General Fics
Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Paperwork by Kirixchi

  • Recommended by: Kchishol, lindabhair
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Having just gotten over his initial shock with the modern world, Cap has to deal with the one constant in the military in any age, the bureaucracy, which now has the headache of processing an officer who has been out of action for 70 years and technically up for retirement despite his true physical age is still in the 20s.

The First Avenger by shestepsintotheriver

  • Recommended by: Phoenix Fire 69
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "Steve Rogers neither begins nor ends with Captain America. Before all that, before the fame and the horror and the loss, Steve is just another hungry kid from Brooklyn. Braver than most- or more bull-headed, depending on who you ask- but pretty average. Discounting the bad heart, the bad lungs, the bad temper, or at least that’s what Bucky always says when Steve does something really stupid, but he'll always add 'the best guy I've ever known' at the end of the list." The story of the First Avenger with almost all the bits from the movie, then several additions to canon.

Grateful by ALMartin1011

  • Recommended by: Phoenix Fire 69
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Steve knows he should be grateful for the gift he was given through Project Rebirth, but his new life wasn’t as easy as he expected it to be.

What Happened To Everyone? by Jack Borroughs

  • Recommended by: Omar The Bruce
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Somewhat withdrawn after months of living in a SHIELD facility in the present, Steve visits the last remaining member of his wartime companions.

Something More Important by T_Fowler

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Steve Rogers is determined to join the Army and go off to war. Bucky is concerned what will happen if she's discovered. rule 63!Steve.
  • Pairing: Steve/Bucky
  • Comments: While this starts out as simply a female Steve Rogers, it eventually goes deeper and focuses on a Steve Rogers that struggles with gender identity. There are two completed sequels: Something to Live For and Something to Wait For.

Innermost and Underlying by quigonejinn

  • Recommended by: Lavanya Six
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Stephanie Rogers goes into the chamber. Somebody they decide to call Steve Rogers comes out. Genderswap-ish Captain America with lashings of comic canon. Also, the pronouns, as you can imagine, are a mess.

Captain Fraudulent by Ellid

  • Recommended by: Mandichaos
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: SHIELD did its best to help Steve Rogers adjust to modern society. Too bad they forgot to warn him about the 24-hour news cycle. Oops.

It All Starts Somewhere by FantasytoHeart

  • Recommended by: The Wild West Pyro
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Hydra has bases all over Europe and the newly formed Howling Commandos have their work cut out for them. A story about the Commandos as there are not enough of them.
  • Comments: One of the best Captain America fanfics out there, and one of the very, very few centered around the Howling Commandos. Any fan should definitely check it out.

Grave Misgivings by Rassilon001

  • Recommended by: roseunity
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Johann Schmidt, aka the Red Skull, finds himself lost and alone on a dead world following his last conflict with Captain America aboard the Valkyrie. Watch his downward spiral into madness as he comes to realize everything he believed in is a lie. And what new and terrible thing emerges from that revelation.
  • Comments: A fanfic made to answer one simple question: Whatever happened to the Red Skull?

The Night War: 60th Anniversary Edition by praximeter (link here)

  • Recommended by: Aethyria
  • Synopsis: In 1947, Master Sergeant James B. Barnes's surviving field journals were posthumously published as the classic war memoir The Night War. Now a high school history classroom mainstay and required reading at West Point, this highly anticipated 60th Anniversary Edition presents the original, unedited text alongside detailed historical notes that provide important context to the extraordinary wartime heroics of Captain America and the Howling Commandos. Barnes, James B. The Night War: The Wartime Memoirs of a Howling Commando. Ed. Harold Miller. 60th Anniversary ed. New York: Harper Collins, 2005. Print.
  • Comments: This fic reads like a real life genuine war memoir, I could almost imagine this book in my high school class. The characterization and the way the author blends real life events with the story is beyond description. One of the best fics I have ever read, hands down.

Another Man's Shoes by csulliven

  • Recommended by Kalaong
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Tony just wants to understand why Steve did what he did. When he gets the answer it's not what he expected.
  • Comments: ...twitch. TWITCH. This makes PERFECT sense, and explains why a white 40's hetero Catholic male would be a champion of tolerance and individual will that makes most 21st century advocates for social justice and reduced government look like Nazis. My new headcanon for all versions of Cap.

  • Comments: A beautiful drabble focusing on Steve's relationship with Bucky and how he feels about his new role in life.

Shipping Fics
Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

your blue-eyed boys by Feather

Heaven Ain’t Close in a Place Like This by not_without_you

  • Recommended by: Phoenix Fire 69
  • Status: Incomplete
  • Pairing: Steve/Bucky
  • Synopsis: Bucky thought the war was easier. He was made of war; down to the marrow of his bones — he and Steve both. Bourne and died of it. Peacetime didn’t stand to reason. Maybe it had, long ago — not anymore. He'd been only just stumbling into adulthood on gangly legs when he’d gotten that conscription notice. Playground to battleground, and he’d never made it home from the fight.

When They Sound the Last 'All Clear' by Emiliana Darling

  • Recommended by: RoseAndHeather
  • Status: Dead
  • Pairing: Peggy Carter/Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes
  • Synopsis: Three months after the crash of the Valkyrie, in a world where Bucky never fell from the train, Howard Stark's efforts pay off: Steve Rogers is found in the ice. Peggy's first instinct is to focus on him, and screw the rest of the world — but the rest of the world isn't playing ball, and an anti-HYDRA mission to the Soviet Union, accompanied by one James Buchanan Barnes, will change the lives of three people forever.
  • Comments: While there's only one chapter posted, it can easily be read as a standalone.
