Rhinozilla on Archive of Our Own
  • Recommended by: KitKatJ
  • Comments: Rhinozilla's D:BH works, collected in a series dubbed "Detroit 07", are all focused on a post-peaceful uprising DPD and Connor bonding with the other officers through various means. They write everything beautifully, from the silliest shenanigans to the most heart-wrenching angst, and each story is a work of art and an absolute delight to read. Highly recommend!

liketolaugh on Archive of Our Own

  • ''Comments:"" liketolaugh has written some incredible and painful works, mostly focused on Connor. They have a heart-wrenching way of writing that easily adapts to both warm fluff and painful angst.

    General Fics
Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.
The Novelist by Satirrian
  • Recommended by: helpimlost
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Androids did not feel. His mind was cold metal and white plastic. He was nothing more than a mission. The time was 1207 and Lieutenant Anderson was due to arrive at the station. Connor predicted that there was a 67% chance that Lt. Anderson had not arrived at the station.

Some new cases come in that make Connor wonder what deviants really are.

  • Comments: Probably my favourite DBH fic out there. It's a retelling of Connor's story with some changes, but its a lot better. It shows his conflict with his deviancy since the beginning and his interactions with other deviants.

Under the Level Winter Sky by Auguris

  • Recommended by: 307020
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Markus and his comrades managed to reach a peaceful end to the android-human conflict. Connor rose up against his creators and joined his people in their struggle for freedom. Kara never made it to Canada, but she kept her family alive. CyberLife lost. Temporarily. They're not about to stand idle after their trillion-dollar investment just walked away.
  • Comments: A fantastic dive into the complications of a post-"good end" victory. This fic highlights the nuance in all its character portrayals, from the growing rapport between Connor and the other androids to the twisted mentality of CyberLife's villain cast.

Oregon Trail by Zalein

  • Recommended by: 307020, thebadplace
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Simon is haunted by what he did to leave Stratford Tower. Connor has been sent to infiltrate the deviants—with a shrinking window to produce results. North has been benched due to injuries, and finds distraction in a shy YK500 playing games with her friends. No one in their right mind would want to go to Oregon... but a game where you can shoot humans doesn't sound so bad. Featuring: android cholera, the power of friendship, and a revolution that costs more than a week to win.
  • Comments: A scary good example of crack played straight. This fic touches on a lot of the messier relationships and consequences canon ignores, and packs some serious character trauma despite the absurd premise. It's part one of a series, has multiple sequels.

  • Synopsis: The origins are the same. Markus, a caretaker for an old, famous artist. Kara, a household model involved in an abusive home. Connor, a special investigator prototype with a mission to find deviants. The origins are the same, but the beginning of their stories are different. The end will be what's needed of them.
  • Comments: Connor is sent by Amanda to go undercover as Todd's replacement android. Kara is restored but sent to Carl Manfred's home. Markus is hired by the police department as Hank's partner. This fic has interesting interactions exploring how would the other protagonists react in the others' situations.

stay out of trouble by yellow_caballero

  • Recommended by: ggoulden1695, thebadplace
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Unemployment was not the best thing to ever happen to Connor, but it was high on the list. The best thing to ever happen to Connor was the sight of a Corgi wearing a small cowboy hat leashed to a post in front of the liquor shop. The second best thing to ever happen to him was the emancipation of his people from slavery and the opening of negotiations for equal rights. But unemployment may come in at a solid third.
  • Comment: This fic hilarious with Connor's wry and sassy remarks on everything, basically behaving like a rebellious teenager in this. Yet there's an undercurrent of angst that makes the ending all the more sweet. The author has also written a sequel.

  • Synopsis: Sure, now everyone wanted to hold hands, give out flowers, and pretend machines were real boys and girls or some shit. As if they weren't hunting them through every city like rats just a month ago. People going nuts over their crusade one moment, stinking up the streets with the fires, and all of a sudden everything just fucking stops as though anything changed. Nothing fucking changed. A machine was still a machine, no matter how fancy its program.
  • Comments: There's another story in the series titled 'Iris' that's also worth a look

Somewhere, in the distance, Jeffrey Fowler is writing a detailed list of the pros and cons of auto-defenestration. He will have it framed and hung within the week, and he will longingly stare at it for comfort each and every day until his retirement.

Fog and Ice by ViolentMedic

  • Synopsis: This was by far the stupidest thing he'd done in a long time. Hank did a lot of stupid things, but this had to be top five. Driving hundreds of miles for... for a fucking letter. A letter that just couldn't be real. It had been Cole's name on the envelope. The sticking point was that dead people didn't write letters. Hank wanders off into a foggy, abandoned town in hopes of finding his long-dead son, and runs into some fucking bullshit on the way.
  • Comment: Delightfully atmospheric and terrifying. Especially creepy when Connor and Hank meet up after Connor dies the first time.

  • Synopsis: This story picks up immediately after the success of Markus' peaceful revolution. Connor has just narrowly prevented Amanda from reasserting CyberLife's control over his programming. Nearly shooting Markus throws Connor's control over himself into question. There's no time to question whether the people around him are truly safe, because before the city has a chance to catch its collective breath, higher-up CyberLife employees start dropping like flies. The sudden chain of apparent suicides is suspicious to Connor, and quite quickly, he and his partner Lieutenant Hank Anderson are put on the case.

  • Synopsis: Set six months after Markus' peaceful revolution, this story is heavily North-centric. North is rescued from a sex-trafficking ring that FBI Agent Anne Shapiro (an original character) has been pursuing for ten years. The one thing that North hates more than a human is owing a human something, but as the story develops so too does her relationship with the human who saved her. Or; North gets the mother figure she absolutely bloody deserves.
  • Comment: Heartbreaking, witty and beautiful and an ode of love to an often-maligned character of the game. Don't be turned off by the original character - she is there, unusually, not as a love interest or self-insert, but a fully formed personality who serves to guide and grow North.

  • Synopsis: There's nothing wrong with the smile. It's not one of the terrible, toothy ones Connor had given in their first days of knowing each other. It's subtle, and looks like it fits on Connor's face—like it folds right into the fabricated creases. It doesn't look right on Connor. (Or: Amanda quietly wins on the stage. • Synopsis: Connor became "woke", as the kids say, on a biting December morning. Upon careful consideration, he determined it was best not to tell anybody. List of things Connor has ruined since he deviated: the police force. Hunts for deviants. The printer. Lieutenant Anderson's patience. Gavin Reed's kneecap. The sense of safety and security that came when you were not acting as a double agent for the month old yet still unsuccessful terrorist organization and spilling confidential government secrets. The coffee machine. His life. Mostly his life.

The Uncanny Valley by AlleycatAngst

  • Recommended by: thebadplace

  • Synopsis: Gavin Reed is adjusting just fine to the new world order. He's fine. It's fine. His RK is far more useful than he would ever have imagined, and they're closing cases in record time. Also it's better than Hank's plastic partner, so everything and everyone is settling down after the android revolution. And then the RK900 went and... shot itself in the middle of the bullpen. But that's just the start. Red Ice, hackers, android trafficking, Cyberlife, New Jericho, and his partner's suicide— everything is connected and the rot is so deep it might have already taken hold in Gavin himself... After all, why waste his time on a case without a victim?
  • Comment: An interesting thriller-style mystery and a realistic redemption for Gavin. Has a short sequel and a longer one, both of which are also interesting.

  • Synopsis: Connor had plans for days like this. Make Hank eat food, drink water, take meds. Call Hank's psychologist, book an appointment. Actually get Hank out of the house, if at all possible.

Connor breathed, letting the crisp air wash over his processors.

They had gotten through this before, they could get through it again. He just needed to keep some levity.

Hank faces a shitty mental health week, but this time, he's got Connor to help him through it.

  • Comment: A very good (albeit short) fic wherein Connor takes care of Hank, instead of the other way around.

(Contains: the dubious benefits of over-identifying with pop music, an ill-advised game of emotional chicken with Amanda, the world's worst lake trip, copious robot angst, and Hank trying very hard to be a good dad.)

  • Synopsis: One month, two days, nineteen hours and ten minutes after the end of the revolution the DPD are called to an android homicide; the victim: a YK500 child. A killer playing a sick social experiment pits parents against their android children, and tests the already strenuous relationship between the citizens of Detroit. With Christmas just around the corner, can Hank Anderson and his team solve this case before the holidays?

Or one month, two days, nineteen hours and ten minutes after the end of the revolution, Connor reflects on his deviancy and the events leading him to his current situation; a room in Hank's house and a place in his life. With Christmas just around the corner, Connor finds himself questioning just what being alive means to him, and the lengths he'll go to protect the ones he loves. Oh, and what does one buy for a hard boiled, cynical Lieutenant anyway?

  • Comment: A fascinating take on Connor, Hank, and RK900 (Ronan's) relationship and work after the revolution. Throw in a mysterious serial killer and you have a recipe for trouble.

  • Synopsis: After the Revolution, Hank waits for Connor at the Chicken Feed. When the deviant doesn't show, Hank finds him beaten and tortured within an inch of his life. When Markus unexpectedly arrives at Hank's home looking for the injured detective, everything spirals out of control. Connor has to revert to Cyberlife's original programming to save them all.
  • Comment: A well-written, 27000-word complete oneshot story? Any fanfic hunter knows that's like finding a unicorn. This one is great, and will hit you right in the feels. Warning: graphic content, but this is D:BH, you should already know that.
  • Comment: I don't believe I have words to describe how much I love this fic. If you like dad!Hank, badass Connor, and a truckload of Connor whump, this one's for you.
  • Comment: sadly the story was deleted from archiveofourown, but luckily, it can still be found and downloaded at the Wayback Machine page.

  • Synopsis: Gavin Reed was ruthlessly ambitious and unapologetically arrogant; the Detroit Police Department never thought they'd need to know anything else about the Detective Sergeant—until one day it has to scramble to gather every detail of the man's life to save it.
  • Comments: A great story of empathy with a mystery added in. Believable characterization, interesting plot, and lots of whump in all shapes and forms!

  • Status: In Progress, updated every Friday.
  • Synopsis: 2037. A human psychologist who suffered brain damage in a car accident awakens with apparent false memories from another world. After realizing that Markus is not the person she expected him to be, she begins to realize that she must intervene to help the android movement, if it is to succeed without his help. A story about underdogs and nearly hopeless causes.
  • Comment: Focuses on an alternate revolution path where human and android cooperation will be necessary. Includes lots of mystery and intrigue and focuses on the thought processes of the (original) main character. The story has romance and sex scenes, which have thus far been minimal slow burn stuff, but the author always warns the reader so they can skip if desired.

  • Pairing: Hank/Connor
  • Synopsis: Hank pulls back from their hug first. "You got a place to stay?" he asks.

It could be easy. He could say no, and Connor is certain Hank will invite him over. He'll insist Connor takes his bed while he crashes on the couch. He'll blow up the inflatable mattress Connor saw stacked in his crowded closet.

Hank will move heaven and earth to accommodate him, and that's why Connor can't. He's put Hank through one hell of a week, and he can't add this to the pile.

"Yes, I do," Connor says, pretending he doesn't see Hank's disappointment. "I have a private suite in Cyberlife Tower."

  • Comment: Once again featuring Connor's belief that his existence is a burden. Don't worry, Hank sets him straight.

  • Pairing: Gavin/Nines (RK900)
  • Synopsis: As the crime rate rises, the police are forced to take back androids, and Gavin finds himself paired up with the last android to come out of CyberLife since the revolution. Despite their rocky start, they learn to work together until a serial killer falls into Gavin's lap. And then another. Gavin believes they could be tied but no one believes him. Not even his android partner sees the connection. Is he imagining it, or is something there?
  • Comment: This story is amazing, but it's also incredibly dark. Every chapter I read makes my heart rate skyrocket. There is no happy ending for Gavin in this story. My heart broke when I read the last chapter.

  • Synopsis: Gavin never expected to be one of the lucky few who actually came in contact with his Soulmate. Worldview now shattered, Gavin is left to struggle against time and his own ingrained prejudice to search for a future where the two of them can actually live.

Gavin never did know how to back down from a fight.

  • Comment: For someone whose a big fan of time loop/groundhog day trope and a sap for soulmate A Us, this fic is very self-indulgent for me. So I'll admit I may be a little biased in recommending this fic. Those weak-hearted, be prepared as this is very angsty fic with repeated character death, but it does have a happy end. The author has written spinoffs of certain events in Running Uphill from Connor's pov and a fic that's an AU of Running Uphill with the pairing of Gavin RK 900 or Nines.Just wanna say that this fic ties up it loose ends very well.
  • Now considering the other fics recommended on here and how Gavin is written in them, most people will probably find that the A Us involved in this fic, do pushes extenuating factors that certainly gives the author more creative liberties than a fic trying be close to cannon and not diverge from
it.
  • Probably why I loved this fic as much as I did, while reading I was rooting for Gavin in general, found Running Uphill to both really good Connor/Gavin fic but great time loop fic too.

  • Synopsis: The free androids of Detroit start building their brand-new future, but peace is only relative in the troubled times that follow a revolution. The AI that both guided and punished him is gone, but at a price, and he struggles with his newfound freedom when guilt and fear are the crumbling foundations of his new life.
They say they want him there with them, but Connor can't understand why. He's afraid of himself and what he's capable of, afraid that maybe these feelings don't have their place within him.But despite all the doubts he may have, Connor finds that he desperately wants to live : because whenever he feels himself slipping and falling, they're here to catch him.

Please heed the tags. Look after yourself!

  • Comment: 450k RK1K slow burn, with a hefty helping of Connor whump, PTSD, depression, and general bad times (though it's starting to look up) for the androids post-peaceful revolution. And the author doesn't mess around with the slow burn, either. It's been 450 thousand words and the closest they've gotten is semi-holding hands. If you have a lot of time to kill and/or you want to have your heart ripped to pieces, this one's for you.

Slouching Towards Bethelem by o_antiva

  • Recommended by: Shadowfire04
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: RK900/Connor
  • Synopsis: What Hank told them was this: Connor had a choice and he chose the power of good. He could have joined the machine uprising. He could have burnt everyone's skeleton to a chain-link fence. He could have gone full Dolores. He could have become Death, destroyer of worlds. But no, he just strolled back into the precinct like vintage John Mulaney in his high-waisted man routine.

And, why? Who knows. Who the fuck knows. Hank wonders if the RK800 team at CyberLife can even figure this shit out, and they built him. Weirder than that, and maybe worse than that, the hyper-advanced AI investigator has decided to imprint itself on Hank, so now he's got to teach Connor about the important things about life, like action movies and the Metallica Black album. And he's got to get his own shit together.

December 2038. Captain Fowler assigns Reed to work with Hank and Connor in an overwhelmed precinct. Reed is tasked with an unusual android case out of spite, while Hank assists Connor in adjusting to life at the station. Just as Connor -53 starts to hit his stride, strange memories begin to surface: corrupted data, an advanced RK model, and the horrifying implications of past lives in CyberLife Tower.

  • Comment: While this leaves off on a cliffhanger, this is undeniably an enjoyable read. It mainly keeps a lighthearted tone as Connor tries to befriend Gavin, who is understandably wary of the RK800. Hank, meanwhile, just goes along for the ride. The ship isn't the main focus, so if you're looking for a general fic featuring police force humor not unlike Brooklyn 99, this one's for you.

  • Pairing: RK900/Connor
  • Synopsis: AWOL military android RK800-57 'Connor' turns up on the streets of Detroit, looking for answers on deviancy - looking to save the undeviated RK900 he left behind.

Connor finds help in the form of reluctant android investigator Hank Anderson and the city's resident deviant population, but the search for a soul becomes far more convoluted than he anticipated.

An RK1700 military AU exploring the nature of deviancy, spooky machine love and the high price of freedom in a pre-rev world.

  • Comment: This is a beautiful fic where Connor and the RK900 (Nines) are originally deployed as android soldiers in the Arctic. The fic has an incredibly distinctive and profound writing style not quite like any other fic I've read.

Getting Ahead of Deviancy by lapsi

  • Crossover with: Mindhunter
  • Synopsis: The FBI begins to infringe on Lieutenant Hank Anderson's investigation of the TV station hijacking, in the form of the newly established Deviant Science Unit. The Bureau's answer to outbreaks of deviant behaviour, this unit collects data on deviant androids in order to understand and preempt criminal behaviour. So, Hank has no fucking idea why they've zeroed in on a non-deviant android, his partner Connor.
  • Comment: An interesting crossover featuring amazing characterization of the four leads, a more realistic android revolution and an explanation into what deviancy and rA9 really are. Also features an interesting characterization of RK900.

Of course, Connor's the only one who knows just how complicated things are now, and he's got slightly bigger problems at the moment. Like staying alive, and one step ahead of the monsters that want to steal his apparently very human soul.

  • Crossover with: Marvel Cinematic Universe
  • Synopsis: Trapped in an alternate past by an errant energy flare, Connor struggles to find a place for himself in a world where those like him do not and cannot exist. At the same time, Tony latches onto every possible distraction from his still-looming PTSD, and JARVIS does his best to support him wherever he can. These things are not related. (Yet.)
  • Comment: As per usual, liketolaugh outdoes themselves with each work. Expect some Jarvis and Connor friendship, Tony and Connor getting the love and support they need and deserve, and plenty of little warm fluff scenes in between. If you want something that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside, this one's definitely for you.
