Becky Blue Eyes ((also found here: Becky_Blue_Eyes))

  • This author has a series of connected Big Hero 6 stories called the "Nakama Maintenance Workshop 101" series on both fanfiction.net and Archive of Our Own. These stories focus on a sibling relationship between Hiro Hamada and Abigail Callaghan, AU scenarios of Big Hero 6, and LOTS of tragedy and overall feels. Each story is marked with spoilers and certain chapters are marked with trigger warnings for things like gore, self-harm, etc.

    General Fics

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

5 Times Hiro Still Had a Big Sibling, 1 Time he was a Little Brother by Sick Twisted Mind

  • Recommended by: Anemo 1, Ellowen
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Being a 13-year-old is hard, even harder when you're in college, hardest when you're a superhero. It's a good thing Hiro has someone(s) looking out for him and time to still play the role of a little brother.
  • Comments: A very heartwarming look into the deeper relationships between Hiro and his five friends. A series of six snipplets that show that you don't need to be blood-related to be a sibling.

Nii-chan and Birthday Gifts both by Latiwings

  • Recommended by: Anemo 1
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: (Nii-chan) Hiro had always reverted to calling for his Nii-chan when he's overwhelmed. 4 times when Tadashi didn't answer the call, and the one time he did. (Birthday Gifts) In which Tadashi felt threatened because he's not the only spotlight in Hiro's life anymore.
  • Tags: Post-movie, teamfic, alive!Tadashi.
  • Comments: Nii-chan is another piece where each of Hiro's friends show how they can dedicate themselves towards him and has an interesting, if not slightly far-fetched hook at the end. Birthday Gifts is a semi-sequel where the team prepares Hiro a surprise birthday party and get a little competitive over gifts for him. The writing can do with a bit of a tune-up, and the ending of Nii-chan can be a bit hard to swallow, but both stories nail the characters. It's an interesting read considering how this author handles the hook at the end of the first story.

Differences by ChocolateSyrup

  • Recommended by: fanfiction000

  • Comments: A hilarious, thought-provoking and heartfelt story that further explores the relationship between Hiro and Baymax.

Malignant Butterfly Infestations: A Case Study by ketren

  • Recommended by bookwormgal
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The Hamada family has a long history of genius, but it also has a history of self-sacrifice. Baymax intends to ensure that Hiro doesn’t follow the family tradition in that respect - even if Hiro appears to be fighting him the whole way.
  • Comments: An amazing story from Baymax's point of view that continues to show Hiro's behavior after the film as he continues to deal with his brother's death.

Memories by dewdropzz

  • Recommended by pretentiousPeanut
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: The events surrounding Tadashi's death told from the point of view of Baymax, everyone's favorite healthcare companion. This story reads a lot better if it's imagined in Baymax's voice, just sayin'.
  • Comments: The first third of the movie (and a bit before the beginning) written in Baymax's POV. To quote dewdropzz, "This story reads a lot better if it's imagined in Baymax's voice, just sayin". It's short and most of the dialogue is from the film itself, though Baymax's inner thoughts are written extremely well.

From the Ashes of Grief by Uniasus

  • Recommended by kilala2tail
  • Status: Completed
  • Synopsis: The public attention Big Hero 6 received after the battle is not something Hiro wants. He just wants to curl up in his room and cry. But his friends won't let him, Tadashi won't let him, and he really would hate it if he went down in history as 'the baby hero'.
  • Comments: A beautifully done fic showcasing Hiro's healing process as he works through the loss of both Tadashi and Baymax, what it takes to be a hero, and finding his place in the world.

Stolen Brother by HotTopicLuver

  • Recommended by: hebira15
  • Status: Dormant; last updated July 2019
  • Synopsis: Tomeo, Maemi, and Hiro Hamada died in an accidental fire when Tadashi was still young. But fate works in mysterious ways as he meets both Alistair Krei and Robert Callaghan. Both of them he admires until he learns a dark secret concerning the fire that killed his family. Not only that but when a certain boy acts as a link to this secret it will change everything... Hiro Callaghan?
  • Comments: Probably the sweetest stories ever about Callaghan and Hiro as Father and Son. You can hate Callaghan in the movie but you can't hate this loving father in this fanfic who's overprotective of his (kidnapped) adoptive son.

Twist of Fate, AO3 link by WillowBlueJay17

  • Recommended by: 2heartgirl, Ellowen
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A small twist of fate can change quite a lot about a story. But, in the end, a brother still grieves. A story that looks to offer a different but familiar approach to the story if a certain something had happened differently.
  • Comments: A fanfic that looks at the idea of what would happened if Hiro died instead of Tadashi. Everyone is in-character and the relationship between the Hamada brothers is expanded beautifully in the early chapters. It's worth a quick check at least. Complete at 15 chapters, and absolutely heartbreaking.
    • SubversionStation: Tentatively agree on this. The fic isn't the strongest "Alive!Tadashi" AU out there — instead of establishing Tadashi's unique process of grieving, the author just retreads Hiro's actions in the movie with few significant changes, to the point of literally taking dialogue straight from the movie. On the other hand, the first few chapters beautifully capture how the bond between the Hamada brothers came to be, and what divergences there are to movie events end up being pretty interesting. I would definitely recommend reading up to Chapter 4, but how much you're willing to put up with the copy-paste writing that follows is up to you.

I'll Try to Picture Me Without You But I Can't by songdreamer2016

  • Recommended by: Michael 2608

The exhibition hall is on fire, and the neurocranial transmitter is still inside. Tadashi refuses to let Hiro venture into the fire to get it, but Hiro goes anyway. Alive!Tadashi AU. [Twin-fic to 'Cosmic Intervention' by New and Old.] Set in CI Universe.

"And it's going to take me another month to gather up enough materials to make another transmitter!" Hiro goes to get his transmitter, despite Tadashi's efforts to stop him from going into the building. Alive!Tadashi AU. [Twin-fic to 'Picture Me Without You' by songdreamer2016.]

The Only Pay-Off (For Having Any Faith) by Hedgi

  • Recommended by: kilala2tail
  • Status: Completed
  • Synopsis: Gogo called it "intuition," Wasabi called it "luck," Honey Lemon called it "big brother instinct", and Fred called it "A real-life super-power." Tadashi Hamada called it "ten years of experience." And "access to tracking devices." No matter what, Tadashi will always protect his brother, would do anything for his brother—even help a villain with a revenge plot like something out of Fred's comics.
  • Comments: Also found on FF.net, this is one Alive!Tadashi fic that hits all the right notes. Includes, to quote the author - "Glimpses into other character's lives, Aunt Cass's past, and the power of friendship and family. Canon compliant until the fire, then all bets are off. Contains kidnapping, emotions, and puns."

There Are (no) Dead Ends, AO3 link by Fieryflowers

  • Recommended by: Michael 2608
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: It is said that when your parents die, you lose your past. When your spouse dies, you lose your present. And when your child dies, you lose your future. However, when your sibling dies, you lose your past, present, and future. [AU where Hiro dies and Tadashi forms the superhero team]
  • Comments: An engaging story, but there are a lot of tense changes — sometimes in the same paragraph — that can be pretty jarring. And the "character development" brought on by the AU feels a bit out of left field and pretty OOC, like Tadashi straight up murdering people. Still, has some interesting concepts — Ellowen

Living Louder by ToukoTai

  • Recommended by: SubversionStation
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Sometimes you just miss someone. You enter an alley just as they turn the corner and all you get is a little flash of them and they're gone. Hiro lives a full but short life. It's still up in the air what sort of life Tadashi will live.
  • Comments: So this is a bit of a weird AU. It's a oneshot where Tadashi went into a coma for six years after the fire, and he wakes up almost immediately after Hiro dies in a superhero-related accident. However, the emotional beats of the story are spot-on, and it's both adorable and heartbreaking to watch Hiro grow up through a video diary. Seriously, if you're up for a short story that gives you all the feels, you're gonna want to read this.

But Tadashi will have to learn fast because an evil spirit named Yokai will soon arrive and threaten everything he cares about…
  • Comments: Part one of Tadashi's Guide to the Other Side, this story has a well-done mix of technological and supernatural elements that are used to add an interesting twist on the events of the movie from Tadashi's viewpoint, with beautiful artwork to back it up throughout the story.

The Pulse by marvel1015

  • Recommended by: kittyface44
  • Pairing: Hiro/OC
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: This story takes places a year after the events of the first movie. Hiro has continued on with his life at SFIT, until he meets a 15 year old girl named Akria Tanaka who, like him is a prodigy. They hit it off almost instantly, and Hiro soon introduces her to his circle of friends. After being rescued by the Big Hero 6 team one day, Akria is inspired to become a superheroine of her own league. However, when a tragic event turns her life completely upside-down, she'll end up turning to the team of superheroes for help. And could there be more than just friendship going on between Hiro and Akria?
  • Notes: marvel1015's OC, Akria is very interesting. She is almost like Hiro in some ways, but ultimately has her own personality. The story itself is one of those where Hiro meets a girl his own age and the two fall in love, but it is portrayed very realistically over a certain period of time. Now has its own Tropes page: Here it is!

Lighting Candles by PitViperofDoom

  • Crossover with: Rise of the Guardians
  • Recommended by: Monoxide
  • Synopsis: The death of Tadashi Hamada was both the end of Hiro's world and the mark of a new beginning. Turns out it was one for Tadashi, too.
  • Status: Complete
  • Comments: This is a really enjoyable fic for both fans of Big Hero 6 and Rise of the Guardians; the characters from each are written well and they interact believably (for example, Jack and Tadashi can't stand each other, to begin with, as Tadashi perceives Jack as irresponsible and Jack considers him uptight). It runs parallel to the Big Hero 6 film, playing with the idea that Tadashi came back as a spirit and later a Guardian after his death (and convinces North to let him protect Hiro as his first Guardian duty), while also having an independent plot and enemy that the Guardians will have to deal with later on.
    • Seconded. Everyone is perfectly in character and the dialogue really reads like a movie script (seriously, give it your best shot with the character's voices). You really feel Tadashi's struggle to adjust and the difficulties that come with suddenly becoming a Guardian. A word of warning, though, Tadashi is very angsty in this fic (justifiably so, but it's there) so if you don't like having your heart strings pulled by heavy doses of depression you're going to want to read this in moderation. That said, the conversations with the Guardians are always funny (Jack's dialogue is dripping with snark) and North is plain hilarious as usual. There is also a fair bit of profanity (crap, damn, hell) that may seem a bit OOC, but rest assured they're not abused too frequently.

  • Crossover with: Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: It's all Starch — ahem, Stark's — fault. Quill too, but Stark built the cause of all this trouble. Idiot. Precautions are stupid, and this week turns out to be more or less a getaway on the worst planet in the galaxy. And even better, Rocket's stuck with some kid and a puffy balloon with issues understanding personal space.
  • Comments: "Or: ten interweaving drabbles just barely outlining the events of a week of absolutely nothing but chaos, chip eating, building, and awkward hugging." In which Hiro and Rocket are so similar it's frightening, Groot and Baymax become buddies, and in the end it all works out well.

Sequel to Empathy.
  • Comments: By the author of other big crossover fics such as the Mega Crossover universe he created in The Dragon and the Bow. Also, despite the large number of crossovers, most of these are more implied in the backstory or with a Cameo in the dialog. Nonetheless, this gives the universe a sense of depth and mythos that slowly is revealed over the course of the fic. On the other hand, it's also something of a Fusion Fic, combining the end of Inside Out with the middle of Home and Big Hero 6.
  • Pairings: Hiro/Riley, Tadashi/Honey Lemon, GoGo/Wasabi

Big Hero Martian by althor42 Also on AO3 under Anonymous.

  • Recommended by Kalaong
  • Crossover with: The Martian
  • Status: Complete.
  • Synopsis: There would have been no rescue for Mark, if NASA had not noticed he was still alive. Unless of course, a certain Big Hero noticed instead.
  • Comments: A fun, well-researched romp where Mark Watney gets rescued by a Teen Genius instead of an international effort. Notable for exploring the consequences of such an act. Teen Genius builds a spaceship? NASA impounds it. Teen Genius launches said spaceship? North Korea lanches anti-satellite weapons at it. Teen Genius returns to Earth, expecting international acclaim? The Government immediately invokes the Invention Secrecy Act, leaving him with nothing except a NASA draft for his trouble. Maybe he'll get to build another ship in five years. And maybe he'll get to ride in another one in twenty. Hey, he might even get to own one of his ships - in thirty years.

  • Synopsis: After Gold Morning, Taylor is dropped through a hole in space and left for dead. Through chance, that hole opened up in a different universe, one which just had its first taste of superheroes…
  • Comments: an excellent read. While Taylor help the team improved as a more professional heroes (after she got caught using her powers), the team (and Aunt Cass) helps her heal as a person. the story split into two timeline. the first one was when Hiro finds Taylor alongside Callaghan's daughter, carry her back to his world, and let her stay as his aunt's employee. the second one, after a time skip, shows the team had grown and experienced, as the world suddenly has its own Trigger Events, and a group approaches them, offering an opportunity to build this world's version of Protectorate.

    Dark Fiction

Stories focused on making the series darker, and/or exploring the darker aspects of the series.

Bruises by Sandfire Kat

  • Recommended by dragonwing7
  • Synopsis: Driven insane with grief after Abigail's death, Callaghan kidnaps Hiro and tries to force him to replace Abigail... and he's willing to do anything to force him to comply.
  • Status: Complete
  • Comments: This is a pretty dark version of the story, and does a pretty good job of making Callaghan terrifying (arguably moreso than in the movie). It doesn't focus on the superhero aspects (those don't even happen here), and part of what makes it terrifying is that is sounds like something that could happen in real life (with some liberties taken, of course).

Humpty Dumpty by gingeringfigs

  • Recommended by Awika
  • Synopsis: Tadashi Hamada is Hiro's brother and he will do anything to protect him.

  • Comments: One of the must-reads in Big Hero 6 Fandom and an incredibly well-done alternative take on Tadashi that not only feels in-character but evokes sympathy. Prepare tissues.

My Demons Are The Wind

  • Recommended by: Tightwire
  • Pairing: Fred/Honey Lemon
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A story that follows Lonely Rich Kid and Geek Fred, and how he met the Nerds. The story heavily focuses on his struggle against drug and alcohol abuse that the movie joked about, and how it affects him before, during and after the movie.
  • Tags: Class A Drugs, Attempted Rape, Death, Violence, Honeyzilla
  • Comments: Remember that joke line about Fred going thirty days without? This story expands on that major leagues and throws in some Crack Cocaine too. The writer has Shown Their Work on drugs and how they affect you emotionally and physically, both while taking them and in withdrawal. Fred also becomes attracted to Honey Lemon as he recovers, without actually displacing the team dynamic. Drug recovery is not a nice journey and Fred even falls off the wagon a couple of times.
