Whispers of the Abyss
is a
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon fanfic by ShadowVulpi. It tells the story of Blot, a Corvisquire who takes on a mission to rescue a Mareep from the Whispering Abyss, a mystery dungeon with extreme time dilation. He had planned to go there alone, but the rest of Team Skystreaker decide to follow him, and they end up learning more about each other in the process.
This fanfic provides examples of:
- …And That Little Girl Was Me: The story ends with Blot telling his new teammates the story of a Rookidee who lived 1,600 years ago, who we know from The Reveal in the previous chapter was him.
- Earn Your Happy Ending: After experiencing many tearful confessions and the horrors of the Whispering Abyss, Team Skystreaker are able to escape and inspire a new generation of explorers.
- Elsewhere Fic: The cast entirely consists of Original Characters, and the locations are all original, too.
- Fish out of Temporal Water: It turns out that Blot has ventured into the Whispering Abyss before... 800 years ago. At the end, all of his friends decide to clear the dungeon with him, and emerge 800 years into the future.
- Furry Reminder: Blot and Rena (who are both bird Pokémon) perch in trees when they sleep.
- Genius Loci: The Whispering Abyss is sentient, and wants to trap Pokémon inside itself. It speaks to Blot by taking the form of a Duskull.
- Long-Lived: Ninetales can live for 1,000 years, and Wartortle can live for 10,000. 800 years later, Pyre the Ninetales and Riptide the Wartortle are still alive.
- The Reveal: Blot is from 800 years in the past.
- The Slow Path: Riptide decides to wait for Team Skystreaker to exit the Whispering Abyss.
- Year Outside, Hour Inside: All Mystery Dungeons have time dilation, but the titular Whispering Abyss has the slowest of all; several months pass in the outside world while Blot is still on the first floor.
