What if Goku Was Born A Half Angel? is a Dragon Ball What If? fanfic by GokuT23.

In this fanfic, it explores the event of Dragon Ball where Goku was a born a half-angel and how it goes from there. This series is completed with 15 parts.

The playlist can be found here.

What if Goku Was Born A Half Angel? has the following tropes:

  • Adaptational Badass: This What If? really buffed a lot of characters. Here are the specfics.
    • Son Goku:
      • Being the title of the video, Goku being born a half-angel counts as this trope. How much? He was able to defeat Beerus easily and later on, an all-out Beerusnote  and Champa going against him rather easily. That never happened in canon.
      • Goku can also use the Kaioken techquice with his Super Saiyan Blue form (or in this case, Super Saiyan Blue Evolution) without any drawback from the get-go, instead of having to use the form a few times to ease into using it.
      • Goku, once he unlocks Ultra Instinct can hold his own against Whis and Vados going all outnote .
    • Vegeta was born with God Ki. Having God Ki enchances your abilities greatly, meaning Vegeta is born way stronger than he was in canon at birth.
    • Due to their fathers having God Ki, all half-saiyans, Gohan, Goten, and Trunks, are automatically this as they too also have God Ki.
    • Just like in canon, Cell has the DNA of all the fighters. Since vegeta's DNA is part of him, Cell also has God Ki. He can also access his own version of Super Saiyan Blue that turns him red.
    • Due to the increased powers of the Z-Fighters and with Dr. Gero having observed Beerus' battle with Goku and hence, allowing him to use that battle's data for his androids, the androids are way stronger.
    • While granted he's already stronger than he is in canon at this point in the story, with Goku still around at the end of the Cell Saga, Gohan has more motivation to train, making him stronger than he was in canon during the Buu Saga.
    • Jiren has God Ki, something he never displayed in canon. It makes him stronger than his canon-self.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Whisnote , Beerusnote , Merusnote , Vadosnote , the Grand Ministernote , Shinnote , Zenonote , and Brolynote  all appear much earlier in the story than they do in-canon. Each note indicates when do they start appearing in the story.
    • Cheelai appears much eariler just after the Cell Saga with the Galactic Patrol instead of after the Tourament of Power working for the Frieza Force.
    • In terms of Super Mode, Vegeta unlocks Super Saiyan Blue Evolved eariler during the Buu saga instead of the Universal Survival Saga.
  • Adaptation Species Change:
    • Goku being born a half-angel, half-Saiyan as opposed to being a full-blooded Saiyan in most other adaptations.
    • Because Goten was concieved after Chi-Chi wished to become a saiyan, he is born a full Saiyan instead of being a half-Saiyan, half-human hybrid. Him not being a Uneven Hybrid of one-quarter Angel and three-quarter Saiyan is due to the way Angel DNA is passed down-only full Angels can pass down their Angel DNA; half-angels can only pass down their non-Angel DNA.
    • Subverted with Gohan. You would expect him to be a Heinz Hybrid of one-quarter Angel, one-quarter Saiyan, and half-human, but instead, he is still a half-human, half-Saiyan being as per canon for the same reason that Goten didn't get any angel DNA.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Unlike canon, Fused Zamasu doesn't release Infinite Zamasu from his dead body.
  • Alien Non-Interference Clause: While the angels do have to obey the Angel law where they made not interfere with the activities of mortals lest they get erased, the Grand Minister (the one who made it in the first place) made Vados and Whis exceptions to this rule to allow them to fight Goku all-out in the bid to draw out his Ultra Instinct. Goku as a full Angel is the only one to not have to follow this rule. Helps that he's more powerful than the Grand Minister.
  • The Cameo: The Goku from a timeline where he was sent to Zeno's world makes a small appearance right at the end to invite this fanfic's Goku to the June 2020 Tourament of Gokus.
  • The Chosen One: Goku apparently was the being to be able to summon the Super Dragon Balls at will. No other angel has ever achieved that status before.
  • The Corrupter: Hearts corrupted Goten into being evil.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: The Grand Minister orchestrated Vados' death to allow Goku to become a full angel and also gain the ability to summon the Super Dragon Balls.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Goku easily defeats both an all-out Beerus and Champa without needing his full powers. Considering he's a half-Angel, it's not that far of a stretch.
  • Dead Guy Junior: Or dead girl junior in this case. Goku and Chi-Chi have a third kid, a daughter, whom Goku suggest to name Gine. Gine is Goku's mother in most other adaptations.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Frieza stays dead after fighting Goku, never once been revived.
    • Double Subverted for Goten. He appears to have been erased by Super Buu's Hakai attack with Goku unable to rewind the effects with his Do-Over. However, late into the series, Fu actually saved him at the last moment and turned him evil, citing how his parents neglected him. However, Goten then dies for good after Goku unlocked his full powers and killed him.
    • Vados is also hit by this near the end of the series. She gets revived by the Super Dragon Balls once Goten, who has become the Knight King, is killed.
  • Declining Promotion: Goku turns down the offer to become the new Omni-King, since he would rather stay with his friends and family.
  • Deity of Human Origin:
    • Downplayed for Goku. He was already in the realms of angelic godhood thanks to being a half-angel, but with his potential unlocked fully, mastered his powers and seeing Vados die made him a full angel.
    • Goten as the Knight King ascends to being an angel via the Super Dragon Balls. Considering Goten already had God Ki within him, it can be considered a downplayed version for him.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Super Buu manages to absorb Beerus, which can never happen in canon. To be fair to Beerus, he was briefly caught off-guard, which was enough for Super Buu to absorb him.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation:
    • An implied one for Paragus. Broly does not mention his father at all, implying he did not spend a lot of time with him. This means Paragus likely perished on Planet Vegeta along with all the other Saiyans instead of dying on Earth from Frieza's death beam.
    • Chi-Chi's the one to kill Raditz instead of Piccolo.
    • Nappa is killed by Piccolo in battle instead of Vegeta for being a failure.
    • Piccolo is the one to kill Android 16 instead of Cell.
    • Dr. Gero is killed by Broly instead of Android 17.
    • Android 19 is killed by Broly instead of Vegeta.
    • Future Goku is killed by Cell instead of dying from a heart virus.
    • Cell is killed for good by Goku using Stardust Breaker on him instead of Gohan with his Kamekameha,
    • Instead of being killed by Majin Buu, Babidi dies when Vegeta grabs his head and squeezes it so hard it explodes.
    • Dabura dies by being killed by Piccolo blasting him in his stomach instead of him being eaten by Majin Buu as a cookie.
    • Fused Zamasu is killed by Goku's Kamekameha Wave instead of being bisected by Future Trunks' Sword of Hope.
    • Instead of Moro being killed by Goku by having the crystal on his head explode in the manga, here he is killed by an evil Goten for his failure over killing the Z-fighters.
    • Fu dies by Piccolo's hand instead of Goku's Kamekameha.
    • Cumber dies to Super Saiyan Blue 4 Vegeta's Final Flash instead of Xeno Vegito pushing him onto the final chain that sealed that prison planet that explodes with his Kamekameha.
  • Divine Intervention: Goku was not the one to destroy the Red Ribbon Army with him being on Beerus' world training with Whis; Kami was.
  • Dropping the Bombshell: Everyone barring Whisnote  and Piccolonote  is shocked to hear the Grand Minister reveal that Goku is a half-angel.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Vados finally gets to spend time with Bardock and Goku after suffering for so long.
  • Enemy Mine: Knowing Goku is a huge threat to their surviability, all the Destroyers and the Angels (except for Vados who teamed up with Whis) decided to gang up on Universe 7 in the bid to improve their survival rates. It doesn't work.
  • Express Delivery: When Chi-Chi announces that she is pregnant with Goku's third kid, Goku, now a full Angel, simply use his staff to magic the baby out of her whole, just like Whis did with Bulla in canon during the Universal Survival Arc.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Apparently the Super Dragon Balls were used a few times but no one knows who were using them. Apparently they were first used around the time Goten appeared to have been erased by Super Buu's Hakai blast. Turns out Hearts and Fu have been using the Super Dragon Balls to turn Goten evil and use him to destroy all the upper gods of the multiverse.
    • Goku finishes his training with the Grand Minister. He just needs a trigger to use it. It's unleashed during his fight with the Knight King and it's how he kills him.
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • The most important nail that enables this What If? to be possible: Vados ends up in Universe 7 to visit her brother Whis. This led to her to encounter Bardock and his squad being under attack. Bardock survived but was badly injuried. She then healed him and before she knew it, she ended up sleeping with him and conceiving Goku.
    • Because Vegeta has higher power level at birth thanks to God Ki, Broly was not banished to Vampa and hence, Paragus stayed on Planet Vegeta. This would eventually lead to Vegeta taking Broly with him for missions as it was blown up.
    • With Goku being born a god, Zamasu decided to take Vegeta's body as inherently part of his mortal-hating mindset. When he took Vegeta's body and became Vegeta Black, when Vegeta Black followed Trunks into the past, Vegeta was outraged over his body being used to terrorize Future Trunks and his timeline and immediately attacked Vegeta Black without any hesitance. As a result, when Vegeta Black was forced to return to the future, he had no time to damage Trunks' time machine.
    • Because of Goku's hybrid status of being an angel and a mortal, all Angels and Destroyers also took part in the Tourament of Power.
    • Since Whis and Beerus were part of this Universe 7 team, there was no need to revive Frieza.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Future Zamasu immediately tells Vegeta Black to fuse with him when he appears knowing that seperated, both of them would lose to Blue Evolved Vegeta and half-angel Goku. Despite meeting the Godzilla in Goku, it's not enough to defeat him.
  • Heel–Face Turn:
    • Vegeta and Broly join the Z-fighters much eariler at the end of the Saiyan Saga instead of the Namek Saga (or Buu Saga if you only count completed Heel–Face Turn) for Vegeta and post-Universal Survival Saga for Broly.
    • Android 17 and 18 willingly join the Z-fighters as per canon.
  • Heinz Hybrid: Subverted. Despite Angel DNA being able to be passed down, the parent who gives the Angel DNA must be a full Angel. If not, in the case of half-angels like Goku, they would only pass down the non-angel DNA to their offsprings.
  • Heroic Bastard: Goku's as heroic as most of his What-If counterparts made by GokuT23. His parents however are not married due to them having a one-night stand with the mother getting pregnant with him. She's Vados. As the Universe 6's angel, her not being married to Bardock makes sense. It's implied they do eventually marry at the end of the series.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Piccolo dies to Cell by rushing his exploding body out of Earth. He gets revived very quickly.
  • Hope Spot: Goku hoped to be able to use the Super Dragon Balls to revive Goten but the Grand Minister informed him that there was only one more use of the balls because someone else had already used them before. He's forced to decide if his son is worth the other universes. He, under the encouragement of Chi-Chi, chooses to revive the universes over his son.
  • Hybrid Power: The Grand Minister believes that Goku being a half-saiyan, half-angel will allow him to be more powerful than two pure angels going all out.
  • I Choose to Stay: Future Trunks agree with Goku's request to stay in the present timeline, due to everyone he knows being dead in his own timeline.
  • I Have No Son!: Goku declared the Knight King, who is actually Goten, to already be dead to him, saying that Goten heroically died fighting Super Buu while the Knight King was just an imposter to him.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Despite not living on Earth, Goku still gets his namenote , still get hit on the headnote , meet the Z-fighters membersnote , and cross paths with Chi-Chinote .
    • Despite not having any Tourament happening between Beerus and Champa, Zeno still wants to host the Tourament of Power. In this case, it's mainly to see the powers that came from how Goku fought against the Grand Minister.
    • Despite the lack of Frieza to push him into his Destroyer mindset, Toppo still uses his God of Destuction powers abeit willingly this time.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Indirectly, Goten as the Knight King reveals to everyone that Vados is Goku's biological mother by calling her grandmother.
  • Missing Mom: As per usual for Goku's mother. This time, it's not Gine. It's Vados. She does eventually reconcil with Goku near the end of the series.
  • Nephewism: Goku was basically raised by Whis, his uncle, for his childhood. Goku eventually tells Whis that he sees him as a father.
  • Non-Human Humanoid Hybrid: Goku is this with a Saiyan father and an Angel mother. Later, Gine, Goku (a full Angel)'s and Chi-Chi (Saiyan)'s daughter, is also this.
  • One-Night-Stand Pregnancy: Goku was conceived after a one night stand between Bardock and Vados.
  • Pregnant Badass: Chi-Chi was pregnant with Goten when she fought Android 18 to a standstill and killed the Cell Jrs.
  • Physical God: Apart from those already established in canon, there are a few new ones.
    • While Goku is already one in canon, he's one right from birth as he's a half-angel.
    • The half-saiyans, Gohan, Goten, and Trunks also counts due to being born with God Ki.
    • Chi-Chi becomes one after obtaining God Ki as a Saiyan.
  • Related in the Adaptation: In canon, Goku is not related to the angels at all due to having Saiyan parents. In this story, being a half-angel, Goku is related to the other angels. More specifically, he's Vados' son. By extension, it makes Gohan and Goten grandsons of the angels and hence, great-grandsons of the Grand Minister.
  • Ret-Gone: Subverted. Even though the way Hakai works, Goku rewinding the time via Temporal Do-Over to prevent Super Buu's Hakai from hitting Goten does not bring back Goten, it's revealed that actually, Goten was actually rescued by Hearts from the timeline, explaining why it did not bring back Goten.
  • Sequel Hook: There was a tournament involving the various Gokus that GokuT23 introduced in his What-Ifs and the Goku in this story is the last Goku who accepts the invitation for June 2020 Tourament of Gokus.
  • So Proud of You: While she always had those moments over Goku, Vados had to keep them to herself until near the very end near her death when she finally could tell Goku on how proud she was with his achievements before the Knight King kills her.
  • Spared by the Adaptation:
    • Goku survives all encounters where he would have died in canon, namely Raditz and Cell.
    • With no Infinite Zamasu, the Future Timeline is spared from being erased.
    • Merus ends up surviving and gets to retain his angel powers instead of being erased and being reborn as a mortal.
  • Taking the Bullet: Goten takes the Hakai blast that was meant for Goku. Goku is of course unhappy with his son dying for him.
  • Team Member in the Adaptation:
    • Chi-Chi becomes a Z-fighter, which never happens in canon.
    • The Universe 7 team for this What If? has Chi-Chi, Future Trunks, Broly, Beerus, and Whis, replacing Android 18, Master Roshi, Krillin, Tien, and Frieza.
  • That Man Is Dead: Goten no longer calls himself Goten but instead, the Knight King. Goku does return the sentiment, citing how his Goten died a hero while the Knight King was nothing more than trash that had to be thrown out.
  • This Cannot Be!: The Knight King cannot believe he was not stronger than Goku despite wishing to be the strongest being in the multiverse.
  • Time Master:
    • Goku's Temporal Do-over allows him to rewind time for up to 3 minutes like all other Angels. He uses it in the attempt to bring back Goten after he died to Super Buu's Hakai blast. It doesn't work.
    • The Grand Minster can stop time for everyone except for beings he wants to interact with.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening:
    • Goku manages to combine Super Saiyan 3 with Super Saiyan Blue out of sheer rage sgyrt Super Buu uses Hakai on his son Goten and makes it impossible to just bring back. As of time of the fanfic was released, the only official time a Goku has done this is in Dragon Ball Heroes, with Goku Black, or under the alias he uses is said game, the Crimson-Masked Saiyan.
    • after seeing his mother Vados die in front of him at the hands of the Knight King, Goku fully unlocks his Angel powers.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • Chi-Chi undergoes this trope after wishing on the Dragon Balls to become a Saiyan.
    • Frieza unlocks his golden form much eariler plus platinum form.
    • Piccolo fuses with Grand Elder Guru and gain new abilities.
    • Cooler and King Cold have unlocked their own Golden forms.
    • Goku manages to unlock his Super Saiyan Blue Evolved form while in his first fight with Beerus.
    • All the Z-fighters train under Whis to prepare for the Androids.
    • Broly can use his Legendary Super Saiyan form with God Ki.
    • Goku undergoes the Old Kai's ritual to unlock his full potential, allowing him to use Super Saiyan Blue Evolved 3 in his base form.
    • Vegeta has his potential unlocked and having his tail returned by Old Kai. It also allows to use Super Saiyan Blue 4.
    • Goku becoming a full angel counts as this, as it gives him full control over his angelic powers as opposed to being a half-angel.
  • What Is This Feeling?: Whenever Goku hugged Vados, he could feel some warmth coming from her. He's confused as to why she had it and when he asked Whis what he thought of it, Whis brushed it off. Considering that he's aware that it was a mother-and-son moment between those two, Whis knew to keep the knowledge away from Goku for the time being.
