Go To

Varian, Harmony, and the Seven Kingdoms is a fanfic written by Angelxoxo8.

This fanfic is one of many that explores the rejected Tangled: The Series spin-off, Varian and the Seven Kingdoms, but with a few added extra twists and characters. One of them being Angel's OC Princess Harmony, who was previously featured in Angel's other Tangled story, Sisters' Tangled Adventure.

Taking place after the defeat of Zhan Tiri, Varian and his girlfriend Harmony have begun settling into their new lives as the Royal Engineer and Co-Queen of Corona, note  respectively. One day, Varian finds a journal that once belonged to his mother Scarlett, and, after confronting his father Quirin, learns that Scarlett and another woman named Donella completed a series of trials to collect totems hidden within each of the Seven Kingdoms to rebuild an ancient device that will reveal the location of the Eternal Library. Realizing that his mother may still be out there somewhere, Varian decides to go on a quest to complete the trials himself. Harmony discovers that she is also connected to the trials somehow and accompanies her boyfriend on the journey, as the trials require both alchemy and magic working as one. Along the way, the two face hardships, learn valuable lessons, and make friends and enemies, both old and new.

The characters all keep in with their portrayals, both in the original concept and fanfics alike. And just like with her previous Tangled fic, the author does a wonderful job of conveying both the scenery and the emotions and feelings of the characters.

The fic went on hiatus in May 2021, but resumed late November, only to go on hiatus again in January 2022. The fic is now considered dead, as of 2024.

To learn more about Harmony and her relationship with Varian, it's is strongly advised that you read Sisters' Tangled Adventure first before reading this one. Has its own TV Tropes here.

This fanfic contains examples of:

  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Played With since she's co-ruling alongside Rapunzel, but it's been stated that Harmony is currently the youngest queen Corona has ever had at 16 years old.
  • Adaptation Expansion: The first chapter reveals what Quirin wrote in his letter to Varian when he was being consumed by the amber and before it was destroyed by the decay incantation. He wrote about the Brotherhood, the Dark Kingdom, and about Scarlett's journal.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Varian's mother's name was Ulla in the spin-off's original concept, but is changed to Scarlett here.
  • Adaptation Species Change: Prometheus was a donkey in the original concept, but is a horse in this fanfic.
  • Affection-Hating Kid: Yong has shades of this, such as covering his eyes when he sees Varian and Harmony kiss or getting grossed out when Chang teases him over caring about her love life while hugging him.
  • All of the Other Reindeer:
    • Chang is apparently not very popular in her hometown, due to her inventions blowing up most of the time. She's even been labeled a walking disaster because of it.
    • Kori mentions that she's been looked down on by other merfolk for being a "privileged orphan" due to being raised primarily by Neserdnia's mage.
  • Becoming the Mask: Hugo slowing begins to enjoy being with the group the longer he stays with him, along with beginning to reciprocate Chang's feelings for him.
  • Be as Unhelpful as Possible: During the Koto trial, the group encounter the temple's guardian, Ciel, who simply tells them that they must "give up everything".
  • Beta Couple: Chang and Hugo are this for Varian and Harmony, who are the stars of this fic. Though inverted, since the latter two already have a stable relationship.
  • The Bus Came Back: This fic sees the return of several side characters from the original story.
    • Madame Canardist and Vigor appear in the Changeling Forest chapter.
    • Aunt Willow, Vex and Anthony the Weasel return when the gang end up in Vardaros.'
  • Call-Back:
    • While in Neserdnia, Varian considers asking a vendor selling copper-plated alembics for information about the water trial.
    • Varian getting turned into a chicken while in the Changeling Forest may be a reference to his Rooster invention.
    • In chapter 15, Varian throws water on Harmony to try to snap her out of singing the decay incantation, like how he did when she freed Quirin from the amber.
  • Commonality Connection: After spending the first few chapters at each other's throats, at the end of chapter 10 Varian and Hugo manage to bond over having to grow up with an absent parent.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Lampshaded by Harmony when she mentions that ever since the incident with Trevor the 3rd, Varian tends to get protective of her when she's around others boys her age. Best shown when the group confront Hugo when he proposes a truce and tries to flirt with Harmony.
  • Demoted to Extra: Since this Fic focuses on Varian and Harmony, Rapunzel and the rest of her group from the original story take a back seat here.
  • Disappeared Dad: Hugo's father walked out on him and Donella when he was little.
  • Discard and Draw: Harmony gains both the powers of the Sundrop and Moonstone following the defeat of Zhan Tiri, but loses her ability to sense evil as a drawback.
  • Dislikes the New Guy: Save for Chang, the others are initially distrustful of Hugo since their first meeting involved him ambushing them and stealing the Bayangor totem. Nuru is the last to join the group after Hugo and is accepted without issue, but she nonetheless remains suspicious of him, especially since he's often looking for treasure to steal.
  • Dying Town: Koto was once as prosperous as the other six kingdoms, but has since fallen into ruin over the years due to being plagued by constant meteor showers. It is revealed that a man seeking to steal the Temple's treasures stumbled upon an ancient curse that caused said showers to forever doom the kingdom. This is Nuru's motivation for joining the group; she wants to find a solution to save her home.
  • Elemental Motifs: The Seven Kingdoms each represent a particular element. So far, the elements for three kingdoms have been confirmed: Bayangor:Fire, Koto:Sky/Air, and Neserdnia:Water.
  • Face Your Fears: The Staff of Clarity shows the user their inner demons, which, for Varian, Harmony and Yong, manifest as their families and friends berating them and calling them failures. Lo and behold, the first trial just so happens to involve conquering said demons.
  • Famed In-Story: Varian and Harmony have become celebrities throughout the seven kingdoms, the former for developing hot running water, and the latter for helping to defeat Zhan Tiri.
  • Forced Transformation: While traveling through the Changeling Forest, the gang get transformed into various animals;
    • Varian —> chicken
    • Harmony —> duck
    • Hugo —> pig
    • Chang —> rabbit
    • Yong —> panda
  • Forgot Their Own Birthday: Chapter 12 has the group planning a Surprise Party for Varian, with Harmony taking him on a scavenger hunt while the others set everything up.
  • Gender-Equal Ensemble: With the addition of Harmony and Chang, the group has three females and three males.
  • Great Big Library of Everything: The Eternal Library is said to hold all the answers and solutions to every problem in the world, containing books on every possible subject known to man.
  • Hair Reboot: An interesting case with Harmony. Much like how when Rapunzel's hair grew back after touching the black rocks, whenever Harmony or anyone in the group with her is in danger, her hair grows to 70 feet in order to protect them via the Sundrop sensing it and activating. Her hair shrinks back to normal when the danger passes.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Despite the mermaid spell having just worn off for him, Hugo dives back into the water to save Chang from drowning after she goes to retrieve the Neserdnia totem from the collapsing grotto.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Chapter 14 reveals that despite all the praise and admiration they're receiving for all their achievements, Varian and Harmony feel like they don't deserve it, believing that they're being remembered for the wrong things.
  • Honor Before Reason: During their group's visit to Vardaros, Harmony learns that her aunt Willow once stole a ruby necklace that belonged to the Baron's late wife and must defeat Anthony the Weasel in an archery contest, or else be forced to serve him and his men forever. Not helping is that she just so happens to be experiencing an off-day with her archery. Fortunately, she gets better.
  • Humble Hero: Despite having become famous throughout the kingdoms, Varian and Harmony don't brag about their accomplishments and are shown to be a bit uncomfortable with all the attention they receive. Chapter 14 expands more on this. (See Heroic Self-Deprecation above)
  • Long-Lost Relative: Phoebus, Neserdnia's court mage, is revealed to be Kori's father. He kept the truth from her to prevent her from finding out about her mother's fate.
  • Love at First Sight: Chang develops a crush on Hugo the minute she meets him and is the first of the group to trust him when he claims to want to join them on their travels despite the others having doubts.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: Yong mentions that he has 7 brothers and 6 sisters. Chang is the only one of them to get major focus.
  • Meaningful Name: Some of the characters have names that befit their personalities and talents.
    • Yong's name means "brave" in Chinese, and he's a kid who routinely creates and handles explosive fireworks. His name is also a play on "young", since he's also the youngest of the group.
    • Chang means "flourishing" or "prosperous". Quite fitting for a girl who's a budding inventor.
    • Nuru is Swahili for "light". Lo and behold, she's a princess who uses the guiding lights of the stars on her dress to find her way. And to keep in with the Family Theme Naming, her father's name, Etoile, is French for "star".
  • The Medic: Because Harmony now has the Sundrop as well as the Moonstone and thus the power to heal, she is this to the group.
  • Missing Mom: One of the driving forces of this fic. According to Donella, Scarlett disappeared at some point before the start of the story and was never heard from since then.
    • Nuru's mother was killed in one of Koto's meteor showers a few years prior to the story.
    • When Kori was a toddler, her mother Adelia was abducted and (heavily implied to be) killed by a human fisherman in a flashback of chapter 15.
  • The Mole: Hugo pretends to join the group per Donella's orders in order to steal their totems. However, see Becoming the Mask above.
  • Multigenerational Household: Yong and Chang, their parents, grandmother, and many siblings all live under the same roof.
  • Number Two: Nuru seems to be becoming this for the gang, as she's taken charge on several occasions whenever Varian and Harmony are unable to lead.
  • Original Character: Besides Harmony, this fanfic also features Chang, an OC created by DeviantArt user jebens1 who is Yong's sister.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: While in Neserdnia, the group discover a spell that temporarily turns them into merpeople. The girls get super long hair, and are decked out in shells and jewels, Varian develops fins along his arms and wrists, Hugo gains a fish fin on one side of his head, and Yong gets webbed fingers and a top made of moss that resembles his shirt.
  • Prophet Eyes: Harmony and Hugo get this after becoming blind in chapter 16, with one eye blue, one yellow, and no pupils.
  • Red Baron: The titular couple have become known throughout the seven kingdoms as the "Great Varian" and "Queen of Legend Harmony" for their triumph over Zhan Tiri and numerous inventions.
  • Retcon: In Sisters' Tangled Adventure, Scarlett was stated to have died of cancer. Here, she is stated to have simply disappeared with there still being a possibility of her being alive.
  • Sadistic Choice: Harmony is faced with a particularly cruel one in chapter 15: Either use the decay incantation to destroy the underwater grotto made for Kori by her late mother in order to stop Phoebus and the King from pursuing them, or risk drowning as the mermaid spell wears off. She chooses the former.
  • Ship Tease: Like Varian and Harmony in the previous story, Chang and Hugo also get a lot of teasing in several chapters.
  • Shout-Out: There are more than a few references to several movies in this fic.
  • Sibling Team: Yong and Chang are brother and sister and are part of the main group.
  • Solid Clouds: The Sky Temple of Koto is held up by clouds that the group can walk on, courtesy of an ancient spell used by Nuru's ancestors.
  • Team Mom: Nuru quickly becomes this to the group once she joins. She assists them with Koto's trial, offers to help Harmony when she's struggling with her archery, and comforts and reassures Chang when she feels like she can't contribute to the group.
  • Temporary Blindness: In Chapter 16, Varian builds a mobile version of the machine he used at the beginning of the series to test out just how powerful Harmony's magic is now that she's both the Sundrop and Moonstone. But a malfunction causes her powers to react in defense and render both her and Hugo blind. In the latter's case, his attempts to save her caused the effects to be transferred to him.
  • Toilet Humor: While the gang are helping the (temporarily) blind Harmony and Hugo navigate their surroundings, Hugo ends up sticking his hand in a pile of fertilizer. The others' reactions to it make it clear what the stuff actually is.
  • Token Adult: Hugo is technically this for the group, being the oldest at 19 years old.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: The people of Vardaros. They still insult Varian and Harmony when they arrive, but are genuinely happy to see them and are notably a lot more cheerful and are working on rebuilding their town.
  • Wutai: The fire kingdom, Bayangor, seems to be heavily influenced by Asian culture, specifically Chinese as evidenced by the legend of Mulan and by the choice of wardrobe worn by the locals.
