At the age of twenty, Ladybug and Chat Noir have hooked up. And then, after one night together, she was gone. A few days later, she met up with him and explained she cannot continue this, because she loves another. The breakup was harsh, and, broken-hearted, Chat decided to leave so that she could have a chance with the other guy. Fortunately (or not), Gabriel offers him a high position job in America. Of course, he has no idea that other guy is him.
Sounds twisted? That's nothing yet.
Now, six years later, Adrien is back for the wedding of Nino and Alya. And when he goes to meet Nino, he finds him babysitting a five year old girl. A girl with Marinette's freckles...
And Emilie Agreste's face.
On that day, he learns his Lady's identity.

Unexpected surprise contains examples of:
- Adaptational Heroism: Hawk Moth has been defeated, yet his canonical civilian identity Gabriel Agreste isn't in jail, indicating that he is not Hawk Moth in this fic. It's actually one of the fic's tags on AO3.
- Birthday Buddies: Emma and Gabriel first meet when the little girl leaves her mom's office to cheer someone up during her birthday, and runs into the boss grieving, because it's also the birthday of his beloved late wife.
- The Bus Came Back: Unexpected Surprise: Fanfare has Plagg and Tikki, among other characters.
- But We Used a Condom!: Without checking the expiration date or even knowing such a thing exists.
- Daddy DNA Test: Gabriel runs one to confirm Emma is his granddaughter.
- Decomposite Character: In this fic, Hawk Moth and Gabriel Agreste aren't the same person.
- Distant Finale: Unexpected Surprise: Fanfare, set when Emma is ten.
- Enforced Method Acting: When Marinette arrives to the exhausted Adrien's photoshoot, the photographer notices the effect her presence has on him, and squeezes it for all it is worth.
- Everything's Better with Rainbows: There is an unusually lasting rainbow the day Gabriel meets Emma for the first time.
- Gold Digger: Subverted. Gabriel, upon confirming Emma's parenthood, checks whether Marinette might be one. She passes. But Gabriel ends up assuming his own son being a deadbeat dad, instead.
- Heirloom Engagement Ring: Adrien intends to propose to Ladybug with his mother's ring. After she rejects him, he loses it, but she finds it and returns it to him for a proper proposal once they make up.
- Identical Granddaughter: Emma looks exactly like Adrien's mom at her age, except for Marinette's freckles.
- It's All My Fault: Marinette keeps crying and apologizing after The Reveal. Adrien keeps trying to reassure her neither of them is more at fault than the other, and once that fails, simply resorts to a "Shut Up" Kiss.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Adrien tried that... of course, he couldn't imagine how terribly unhappy it will make her.
- Legacy Character: Adrien is forced to give up his Miraculous when leaving Paris, and soon Marinette is forced to do the same, because a new Chat Noir needs a new Ladybug (and because fighting while pregnant is not recommended).
- Limited Special Collector's Ultimate Edition: Gabriel's first present to Emma is a limited edition Barbie dressed in one of his designs.
- Mistaken for Gay: Due to Adrien's Single-Target Sexuality, he remained completely single during his years in America, leading to some speculations on the subject.
- Mood Whiplash: Moves from Adult Fear and
Tear Jerker to shameless fluff and back so much that one of the AO3 tags is "a rollercoaster of emotions". - Not What It Looks Like: When Gabriel figures out Adrien is Emma's father, he naturally assumes his son ran away from the responsibilities of parenthood.
- Oblivious Mockery: A couple of times, Alya and Nino talk about how they would love to find and beat up Chat Noir for abandoning Marinette while she was pregnant. They have no idea that Chat Noir is right in front of them, and is beating himself up far harder than they could ever hope to.
- Out-of-Character Alert:
- Nino and Alya nearly have a heart attack when they hear Adrien babysat Emma for a day. Turns out the only ones the girl trusts enough for that are them, Marinette's parents and an old-time neighbor. Five people, all of whom she knows from birth. And here a stranger like Adrien managed on the first day.
- Gabriel's treatment of Emma. He allows her to be present in his company building and showers her with presents, more than he ever did with Adrien. Turns out he is aware she is his granddaughter.
- Parental Sexuality Squick:
- When Adrien tells Nino and Alya about him and Marinette using condoms which were already inside the room, Nino points out that, since the apartment used to be his mother's, they must have been intended for... at which point Adrien asks him not to go there.
- Emma, when she sees Adrien kissing her mommy's neck, acts disgusted... and points out that when a guy wants a girl to like him, he's supposed to kiss her lips.
- Parting-Words Regret: Chat Noir and Ladybug's parting was harsh, and they had to wait six years to speak afterwards.
- Poor Communication Kills: No one actually dies, but, let's see:
- Marinette thinks for six years that Chat Noir ran away and doesn't want any connection with her.
- Adrien believes Ladybug wants to be with another, and goes away to give her a chance - for six years.
- Emma has to grow up for five years without her father.
- Gabriel is certain that Adrien is an irresponsible jerk who left his pregnant girlfriend and ran across the Atlantic from the responsibilities of parenthood.
- So do Marinette's parents believe.
- Adrien believes his father is a jerk who couldn't even tell him he has a daughter (at least that one is cleared the same day).
- Marinette fears that Adrien had kidnapped Emma because of missing the note saying they're out for a few hours. After that, they decide they really need to work on this part of their relationship.
- Quitting to Get Married: Two examples, though neither is quite straight:
- Marinette has to quit, among other things, because she cannot fight while pregnant, or as a single mother.
- Adrien, as soon as matters are resolved between him and Marinette, goes to America in order to wrap things up so that he can move back to Paris and his family permanently.
- Recursive Fanfiction: Surprise, Unexpected by sarahcada (based on the earlier variant).
- Right for the Wrong Reasons:
- Gabriel, in order to ensure Marinette has no Gold Digger intentions, asks that she tells him the name of Emma's father. When she refuses, he assumes that she is trying to protect Adrien,and, satisfied, promotes her. She indeed has no such plans, but the actual reason she gave no name is that there is none to give.
- Emily dreams all the time that she will meet her daddy on the roof. So when during one of the attempts she almost falls, Adrien grabs her and gets them both to the roof, and she starts calling him daddy. Well, he is, but the canon doesn't seem to have had any prophetic dreams so far.
- Secret-Keeper: Alya and Nino know Marinette used to be Ladybug.
- Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Emma used to have dreams about sitting on the roof with her daddy who just saved her from something. Therefore, she constantly tries to get to the roof. During one of the attempts, she almost falls before Adrien grabs her and gets them both to the roof.
- "Shut Up" Kiss: Once Adrien sees words aren't enough to convince Marinette she's not to blame for the mess they were in, he resorts to that.
- Surprise Pregnancy: After one night together.
- Trust Password: Adrien, in order to prove he was Chat Noir, tells Marinette the details of their first date.
- Two-Person Love Triangle: Natural for the fandom, but the results are even more twisted than usual.
- Who's Your Daddy?: Unknown for six years.
- Win Her a Prize: Adrien wins a huge black cat plushy for Emma on their first day together.
