Thus The Remnants Went Forth is a Gate and Hollow Knight crossover fic by StabbyGamer.

An after-the-end epilogue using a revision of ending five, revolving around Hornet and (the) Knight as they round up the scattered remnants of Hallownest and start rebuilding.

And then an entirely different story invades and they rain righteous vengeance upon it in defense of their Good Ending.

Can be read on SpaceBattles.com here.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Adorable Abomination: The Siblings AND Knight. The Siblings are adorable, and Knight is a dork, but both were also made using the Void (aka, a hungry force of pure oblivion, also a weird black liquid), apparently don’t need to eat (until Knight got his new body, at least), and at least somewhat ignore the laws of physics (Siblings float, Knight’s floaty when jumping and falling which is not supposed to be possible.)
  • Another Dimension: Hallownest ends up being brought to one through a rift where the gate used to be.
  • "Ass" in Ambassador: The lead Moss Ambassador of the diplomatic envoy Unn sends does a terrible job; Eris literally screams in his face that Hornet cannot see them and he STILL doesn't take the hint.
  • Badass Adorable: Knight pre-growth-spurt. Knight apparently made it through the whole events of the Hollow Knight game up to the Delicate Flower ending within a couple of days. Keep in mind that this means that not only did he explore a lot of Hallownest in that time, he also fought probably thousands of Infected husks, forty-something bosses, and beat up a god.
    • Also, to a lesser extent, the Siblings - it’s implied that one Sibling that was attacked by a twitchy mantis turned said mantis into a smear on the ceiling of the Mantis Lords' throne room that hasn’t been gotten rid of yet.
  • Banishing Ritual: Hornet does this to Giselle to get rid of the bit of Hardy inside the Apostle.
  • Berserk Button: Hurting the Siblings is a BIG one for the denizens of Hallownest and especially Knight and Hornet. See Knight Templar Big Brother below.
  • Blood Knight: Both the Mantis Tribe and the Fools from the Collesium. Both groups have their own sub-culture that revolves heavily around fighting and other forms of bloody violence - however, the Mantises take the cake here, being that everyone from their Lords to probably their kids loves a good fight and won’t bother arranging for a fight in the Collesium if they want to match blades with someone. Heck, their Lords ambushed Hornet once just to get a good fight out of her!
  • Brown Note: Looking at either Knight or Hornet in their god forms is bad enough, but one Saderan soldier who looks at them both at the same time literally dies from it.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Knight and the Siblings.
  • Creepy Cute: The Siblings, full stop.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The Saderan forces are no match whatsoever for the bugs of Hallownest despite outnumbering them fifty to one.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Knight is literally a Void God, he and the Siblings are beings made out of Void, and their birthplace/home is the deepest, darkest, and arguably one of the creepiest locations in Hallownest. They’re also some of the nicest and most creepily adorable beings you’re ever going to meet, and most of Hallownest would happily go to war for them. Literally.
  • Deity of Human Origin: This happens to Hornet and Knight.
  • Domain Holder: Knight ends up in one of Hardy's hells and can't seem to win the fight. He wins by usurping that hell and making it a new Void.
  • Family of Choice: The Siblings and Knight are arguably related, but Hornet is not really - yet the Siblings consider her as their Big Sister all the same.
    • They later adopt "Junior"(the Grimmchild) as well, and at least one of the Siblings considers the White Lady as their mother, too.
  • Fastball Special: A minor example during the first encounter with the Saderan Army; in order to cut off the enemy reinforcements, several unnamed bugs use this as a means of repositioning. They then cause a rockslide.
  • A God I Am Not: Hornet knows she is flawed, and thus refuses to be worshipped as a goddess. Ironically, she later does become one.
  • The Good Queen: Hornet becomes one for the entirety of Hallownest - even the Deepnest, which the Pale King never managed to do.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: Knight and Hornet are extremely overprotective of the Siblings, to the point that Hornet is perfectly willing to stab threats with her needle first and ask questions later, and Knight both encourages the Siblings to respond to threats with lethal force and if someone is stupid enough to attack the siblings while there, will be quite willing to tear off the offender’s arm and beat them with it.
  • Large Ham: Grimm. For the love of Hallownest, Grimm.
  • Light 'em Up: Hornet inherits the power of the Radiance and becomes the Dawn Reborn.
  • Lovecraftian Superpower: Despite starting off as normal-ish, most of Knight’s spells are now shadowy Void versions of the originals. As said by Hornet in the fic, he has maybe one ability that doesn’t scream like the damned.
    • This also applies to the Siblings, who are apparently learning the same “Void magic” as their more solid-bodied brother. They’ve been seen in-universe to use the Abyss Shriek at the very least.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Many unnamed characters from Hollow Knight have names in this fic:
    • The Mantis Lords are named Angelos, Eris, and Enyo, from oldest to youngest.
    • The Menderbug (the one seen in the game) has been named Ip.
    • Judging by a line that he'd taken up residence in the Weaver's Den, Ord appears to be the Weaver you see in said location.
  • Oh, Crap!: This is the reaction of everyone who saw Hornet seemingly being Infected.
  • Our Dwarves Are All the Same: Well, as "same" as dwarves based off Dwarf Fortress can be called.
  • Our Goblins Are Different: Kobolds, actually - and yes, these are based off Dwarf Fortress (or at least the playerbase's portrayal) as well.
  • Power of the Void: Knight, as per canon, but also the Siblings.
  • Reluctant Ruler: Hornet. She’s none too happy about being crowned as the Queen of Hallownest even if she accepts the role for her people's sake.
    • Also, to a lesser extent, the Mantis Lords. While they act stoic and responsible to an audience and are highly respected by their tribe, the three sisters apparently like to grouse about their duties behind closed doors (and are perfectly happy giving some of their responsibility to Hornet).
  • Took a Level in Badass: Due to gaining a new body, Knight takes several levels. And that's not even including his power as the new Shade Lord...
    • Blink and you'll miss it, but as of Separated 8 (probably earlier), Lemm is capable of using magic.
  • Verbal Backspace:
Grimm: Do allow me the courtesy of finishing before you draw your own conclusions? All in time, little one - we are indeed as much harbinger as follower. And that is why... [points at Junior] he is here.
    Junior: [squeaks]
Grimm: That and he flew off when we weren't watching.
  • Weapon Tombstone: Twice, although one is an empty grave. Somewhat notably, the Hollow Knight is given Knight’s old weapon as a tombstone rather than his own.
