Through the Eyes of Anon-a-Miss

Through the Eyes of Anon-a-Miss is a My Little Pony: Equestria Girls fanfic by sonicfan05. It's a Perspective Flip story of the Equestria Girls 2014 Holiday Special.

After two weeks of chaos at Canterlot High, thanks to the infamous online rumor mill "Anon-a-Miss," the Canterlot Movie Club (Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo) confess to the Rainbooms and Sunset Shimmer (the one they framed for the scheme) that they’re the true culprits. The next day, Principal Celestia and Vice-Principal Luna summon them to Celestia's office and demand an explanation on how "Anon-a-Miss" came to be and why they went through with it despite knowing that they will harm everyone, especially Sunset, in the process. Knowing that their Principals deserved an explanation, the CMC tell them their tale.

Through the Eyes of Anon-a-Miss provides examples of:

  • Apology Gift: After they learn of Sunset's homelessness and well as her innocence in the Anon-A-Miss scheme, the Rainbooms all pitch in to buy Sunset her own apartment.
  • Apologises a Lot: Not from one person, but when it is discovered that Sunset is innocent, she reveals that people have been apologizing to her left and right.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Apple Bloom goes up to Sunset to apologize to her in part 3 of the epilogue, Sunset starts telling her off. It turns out that Sunset was a lot more upset about Apple Bloom revealing that she was homeless to her friends and the principals. That is until Apple Bloom reminded her that the Pinkie promise she made was to not tell anyone about it until Anon-A-Miss wasn't around anymore.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The CMC are punished for their scheme with not only six months of doing chores around the school as detention, but they're forced to discontinue their club for the rest of the school year and are also banned from other extracurriculars during that time, too. Plus, they are grounded by their families, and the whole student body and the staff loses trust in them. Also, despite Sunset being willing to forgive everybody who harmed her, she's understandably wary about trusting them again; the same goes for the CMCs' sisters. However, because Sunset talked to Principal Celestia and Vice Principal Luna and convinced them not to expel the CMC, they are given another chance to make up what they've done to everybody in the school. The people who submitted secrets to Anon-A-Miss are tracked down and punished as well, with the worst of them (such as Garble) being expelled. Also, Sunset is no longer homeless because the Rainbooms' families and the CHS principals buy Sunset her own apartment a few blocks from school as a Christmas and Apology Gift. Also, the CMC have more or less made up with each other, and Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon's friendship is repaired because Apple Bloom asked Pinkie to have her sister note  fix Silver Spoon's grandmother's necklace.
  • Blackmail: When Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo decide to back out of Anon-a-Miss, Apple Bloom threatens to rat Scootaloo out for breaking into the Soccer Team's lockers to find embarrassing secrets to post to keep them from confessing. While it works, Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo vow to help Sunset from the shadows so she wouldn't get hurt by any vengeful student, and they start avoiding Apple Bloom like the plague.
  • Bully Turned Buddy: It is stated that Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon used to bully the CMC around (much like their pony counterparts). After the Battle of the Bands though, the CMC found out about how Diamond's home life was in dealing with her emotionally abusive mother and eventually helped her and Silver Spoon outgrow their bullying ways and befriended them.
  • Closet Geek: Vice-Principal Luna is a secret fan of My Little Dragons, and she wasn't happy when Anon-a-Miss exposed this.
  • Cry into Chest: After sobbing out of guilt for creating Anon-A-Miss and ruining Sunset's friendships, Apple Bloom cries into hers as Sunset comforts her.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Luna calls Scootaloo out on this when she confesses to breaking into the Wondercolt's lockers to get embarrassing secrets to leak.
Scootaloo: I get it, I screwed up! At the time, I did that just so we can make Sunset even more guilty and get us in the clear without drawing suspicion. I didn't think that this will get this bad!
Luna: Well, that's your problem! You didn't think! Did you ever think that maybe your reason for gunning after Sunset was too petty to do something so drastic instead of just talking to your sister-figure? Did you ever think that by posting all those nasty stuff online would bring huge negative consequences to Sunset, the students you attacked, and yourself? Did you ever think at all?!
  • Easily Forgiven: While crying in Sunset's arms, Apple Bloom begs Sunset to forgive her and Sunset tells her that she does forgive her.
  • Exact Words: In Part 3 of the epilogue, Sunset is upset that Apple Bloom revealed to the Principals and her friends that she’s homeless despite Pinkie Promising not to tell anybody. That’s when Apple Bloom points out she only promised not to tell anybody for as long as Anon-A-Miss was going on.
  • Fix Fic: The author admitted in the Author’s Note at the end of the story that he was sick of Anon-A-Miss stories that ended darkly and/or completely demonized the CMC, which is why he wrote the story the way he did:
SonicFan05: Even without matching the ending of the original comic, despite what the CMCs have done, they are just kids! Kids who made a terrible (and stupid) mistake that went out of hand due to lack of judgment and not thinking straight. I'm not defending them by any means, but invokeda lot of people made them out to be heartless monsters, even though that's not the case. I created this story not just about writing what they were up to from their perspective, but to also explore why they resort to Anon-a-Miss in the first place.
  • Forced Out of the Closet: Octavia and Vinyl Scratch are secretly a couple. When the CMC expose their relationship on Anon-A-Miss, Octavia is afraid of how her parents will react.
  • Heel Realization: The CMC has these at separate points over the story.
    • Sweetie Belle already had several misgivings about the scheme, but overhearing Flash Sentry not believe Sunset was Anon-a-Miss and condemn whoever it truly was made her realize it was turning her into a bully.
    • Scootaloo has hers when she hears her Aunts' condemnation of Anon-a-Miss, sees how nasty some of the secrets being sent to the website are, and sees Sunset start receiving injury and death threats because everybody believes she's the culprit. This makes her side with Sweetie Belle in Chapter 8 when she begs Apple Bloom to stop Anon-a-Miss and confess.
    • Apple Bloom's Heel Realization is drawn out between Chapters 9-11, but after the dream of her she-demon form showing herself in a dream and calls her out on her actions and seeing that Sunset is homeless, it solidifies.
  • How We Got Here: The story starts with the CMC in the principal's office, after the three of them confessed to being the true Anon-a-Miss culprits to their families and Sunset the previous night, with Principal Celestia and Vice Principal Luna requesting the full story of why they started Anon-a-Miss. The intermission chapters cut back to the present day, where we see Celestia and Luna's reactions to the horrible actions they've performed for their scheme.
  • Insult Friendly Fire: When someone makes fun of Trixie for still sleeping with a nightlight, she fires back by saying that at least she doesn't watch cartoons made for little girls which Bulk Biceps overhears.
  • Mama Bear: Vice-Principal Luna (who is also the school counselor and helped Sunset out a lot during her Reformed, but Rejected phase after the Fall Formal) spends most of the present-day scenes in a fit of rage over what Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo did to Sunset.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After realizing how alone Sunset is, Apple Bloom thinks this almost word for word in her head.
  • My Little Phony: Vice Principal Luna's a fan of My Little Dragons. She wasn’t happy with Anon-A-Miss exposing this.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Out of the CMC, Sweetie Belle is the nice one, having the biggest misgivings about Anon-a-Miss, only got involved to get back at Rarity for not allowing her to participate in the slumber party she was hosting for the Rainbooms, and is the first to realize the CMC's actions are worse than anything Sunset ever did. Apple Bloom is the mean one, as she was the one who started up Anon-a-Miss out of petty jealousy (and feeling like Sunset was stealing her surrogate mother's attention) and continued the website and framing Sunset even when her two friends realized things were being taken too far and backed out. Scootaloo is in-between, as she willingly joined in the scheme and broke into the Wondercolt's lockers to get secrets to leak, but has her Heel Realization much sooner than Apple Bloom, and sides with Sweetie Belle when she begs Apple Bloom to stop Anon-A-Miss in Chapter 8.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: In Chapter 7, Aunt Holiday tells Scootaloo that whoever Anon-a-Miss is, they're nothing more than a spineless bully hiding behind a computer screen, and she’s glad she and Aunt Lofty have raised Scootaloo right.
  • Perspective Flip: This fic tells the story of the 2014 holiday comic from the perspective of Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo, the true Anon-a-Miss culprits as they enact their scheme and eventually feel guilty about it.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Diamond Tiara sports these when asking the CMC to come to the mall with her.
  • Rage Breaking Point: After seeing Sunset get chased out by bullies and hearing the things they shout at her, Apple Bloom finally loses it. Telling them that what they are doing is no better if not worse than what Sunset did before the Fall Formal.
  • Relative Button: In Chapter 8, Sweetie Belle pushes it hard when she tells Apple Bloom her parents would be disgusted with her if they were still alive and knew what she was doing. Apple Bloom responds by shoving her onto the basketball court's concrete, nearly breaking Sweetie Belle's arm in the process.
  • The Reveal: In Chapter 11, Sunset, after Apple Bloom explains why she snuck into the library before school hours, shows Apple Bloom why she is there. She is homeless. So she sometimes uses the school library as a place to live.
  • Rejected Apology: Even though Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle back up Apple Bloom when she confronts the students chastising Sunset, they still haven't forgiven her for her actions at the playground.
  • Tears of Remorse: After Sunset reveals how alone she was prior to the Fall Formal, and her homelessness, Apple Bloom realizes that she ruined everything for Sunset by creating Anon-A-Miss. The guilt of this causes her to break down sobbing.
  • Token Good Teammate: Sweetie Belle was the most reluctant to go through with the Anon-a-Miss scheme, was the first to have a Heel Realization, and tried to get the other two to stop it before it was too late.
  • Varying Competency Alibi: Part of the reason why Flash and Diamond Tiara don't believe Sunset is Anon-a-Miss is because the account's profile picture has Sunset's silhouette and color scheme and he knows that Sunset would've been smart enough to avoid making herself so obvious.
  • Vigilante Man: Part of the reason why Apple Bloom framed Sunset for being Anon-a-Miss is that she found it ridiculous that Sunset would be Easily Forgiven by the Rainbooms, the school, and Princess Twilight, even with the cold shoulder the rest of the CHS students gave her until she defeated the Sirens. She believed that Anon-a-Miss would give Sunset a more suitable punishment for her years of being an Alpha Bitch. This is also why Scootaloo jumped into the Anon-a-Miss scheme once she found out about it. As the other entries on this page will show, they are very much a deconstruction.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Many students who were once friends with one another are now fighting because of Anon-A-Miss, but most if not all friendships are repaired once it is revealed who Anon-A-Miss really was and it has ended. Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon most of all, who had fought over the necklace Diamond Tiara wore, Chapter 9 Part 1 reveals that it was never Diamond Tiara's necklace to begin with. It actually belonged to Silver Spoon's late grandmother. They end up destroying the necklace in a fight and the rift between them is made worse.
