Fanfic / The Wartwood Girls

Go To

The Wartwood Girls is a What If? AU for Amphibia by Team Gophers which explores the possibility where instead of being separate across Amphibia. Anne got sent to Wartwood along with Marcy and Sasha.

This fanfic contains examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: It is shown that even before her parents got divorced, Sasha's parents were neglectful at best and controlling at worst, always preferring her older sister over her.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade:
    • Sasha's own home life before the series is shown more in flashbacks here which is fuels her Freudian Excuse.
    • Marcy's guilt of intentionally transporting her, Anne, and Sasha to Amphibia is shown more, especially in instances where Anne nearly gets hurt or injured such as in "Water Snake" and "Toad Tax".
    • "Snow Day" reveals Maddie's mother was killed by the Giant Weasel on the previous Snow Day before the girls were transported to Amphibia.
    • Hop Pop's reaction to the events of the heron attack that killed Sprig and Polly's parents (their mom being his daughter) and his wife is shown more here.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • While Ivy didn't appear until "Dating Season" in canon, here she first appears as early as "Sasha and Ivy" before her and Sprig are shown interacting on screen.
    • While King Andrias and the Core didn't appear in canon until season 2, here they make their debuts in the end of "Best Frond".
    • In canon, Valeriana's first appearance was in "Bizarre Bazar" whereas here, she debuts in the end of "Maddie and Marcy" (which is the fourth episode here rather than in season 2).
  • Adaptational Nice Girl: While she is still a toxic and controlling friend to Anne and Marcy, Sasha isn't as willing to resort to lying and deception like in canon (before her Heel–Face Turn in season 3) and ends up defending Wartwood from day one.
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul: While in canon Sasha didn't hold the Plantars in high regard (until season 3) due to blaming them for Anne turning against her and the toad rebellion, here she gets along with them fine. Even when upset with Hop Pop for burying the music box, she still defends him from the toads and doesn't hold it against Sprig and Polly.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: While in canon Felicia's sexual orientation was never specified to be beyond straight (Ivy's dad being her only love interest mentioned on the show), "Hunters" reveals her as bisexual with her having kissed Sally (Sprig and Polly's late mother) at a dance while drunk and also having been married to Ivy's dad at some point.
  • Ascended Extra: Downplayed as while both are still prominent in the canon series, Marcy only made one voiceless appearance in a flashback in season 1 while Sasha only appeared a few times in season 1, here they are already part of the main cast alongside Anne and the Plantars from day one rather than only becoming more prominent in seasons 2-3 like canon.
    • Due to Sasha and Marcy's friendships with them, Felicia, Ivy, and Maddie are more prominent (compared to canon where they were only supporting players) and even become main characters by season 2 due to accompanying Anne, Sasha, Marcy, and the Plantars on their trip to Newtopia
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Sprig and Sasha have this in "Domino" in regards on whether Anne should save the baby kill-a-pillar (Domino II in canon). Sprig argues Anne shouldn't have to listen to what Sasha says and to let her save the kill-a-pillar. Sasha points out that with how dangerous the wildlife in Amphibia is, saving it would only cause more problems and trouble for them (and considering what happened in "The Domino Effect" in canon, she isn't wrong).
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: While starting off as dismissive of the Plantars and the rest of Wartwood initially, Sasha does grow to warm up to them as the series progresses especially after the events of "Toad Tax". It is solidified by "Toad Captain Grime" when she helps defend Wartwood from Grime and his army.
  • Dirty Coward: Monroe proves himself to be this in "Toad Captain Grime" where he is willing to abandon Wartwood with Sylvia and leave everyone else in town (including Sylvia's own family) to suffer the wrath of the Toad army.
  • Easily Forgiven: Zizagged with Hop Pop burying the box here. Marcy is willing to forgive Hop Pop for his actions (due to her own similar actions in intentionally stranding her and her friends in Amphibia), Anne's reaction is fairly close to canon in wanting to try and forgive him after hearing his motivations on why, and Sasha averts this completely by outright running away from the Plantars' home (partially fueled by her own bad experience with her family back home) due to Hop Pop's actions and taking residence in the Sundews for the time being.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While she may have mixed feelings on Hop Pop due to him burying the music box, Sasha refuses to let the toad army kill him in "Toad Captain Grime" and defends him.
  • Family of Choice: Two in this story:
    • In addition to retaining Anne's canon found family relationship with the Plantars, even Sasha and Marcy grow to consider them family (especially the former given how her own parents are).
    • Sasha also does grow to consider the Sundews her own found family as well, especially after leaving the Plantars' residence due to being upset with Hop Pop for burying the music box and taking refuge in their house at the end of "Bizarre Bazar".
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • Due to Sasha being here from the start, she ends up finding out in "Bizarre Bazar" about Hop Pop burying the box at the end of the episode and telling Anne and Marcy about it.
    • Domino II also does not meet or bond with Anne and attack the Plantars due to Sasha stopping Anne and Sprig from saving it in "Domino".
    • Due to Sasha not being there to help Grime go through his Character Development to be nicer to his troops, Percy and Braddock end up turning against him in "Toad Captain Grime".
  • Heel–Face Turn: Percy and Braddock go through this in "Toad Captain Grime" when feeling like the attacking innocent citizens in Wartwood just for Hop Pop's actions is going too far and turn against Grime and his army. By season 2, they have moved into Wartwood.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Some things still occur the same in spite of the changed events.
    • Anne still goes through Character Development to break away from Sasha's influence and considering the Plantars family.
    • Sasha still gets her cheek scar (albeit due to defending Wartwood from Bog rather than fighting Anne).
    • The Plantars still travel to Newtopia to help the girls find a way home.
    • Mayor Toadstool still ends up going through Character Development and siding with Wartwood against the toads.
  • Ironic Echo: When defending Hop Pop from Grime, Sasha says the same line Anne said to her in canon regarding seeing the frogs as more than slimy little creatures that don't matter.
Sasha: They're not just frogs, they're my friends!
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Sasha is very much this to Anne and Marcy though it starts to lessen as the series progresses due to both of them going through Character Development.
  • What If?: This fic explores what would happen if Sasha and Marcy were transported to Wartwood with Anne from day one.
