Fanfic / The Rising of the Shield Hero - The Man Out of Time

Go To

Steve Rogers aka Captain America was prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice, piloting Red Skull's ship into the Arctic to save the world. Things did not go as the Captain expected it to be. He would be summoned into another world where he became one of its Four Heroes, particularly the Shield Hero.

However, the journey would not be a safe one as Captain America not only has to fend off against the near endless horde of monsters but those within the upper echelons of the kingdom that seek out his demise. Still, that wasn't going to stop Captain America as, after all, he can do this all day.

"The Rising of the Shield Hero - The Man Out of Time" is a fanfic crossover between Captain America and The Rising of the Shield Hero. It is created by PowerCore Productions and is part of the Anime X Marvel Phase 3 - The Fall Out Saga. It can be read here.

This work contains the following tropes:

  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Ake has developed far better combat skills after training under Steve and Raphtalia.
    • Rishia gets a sniper rifle from Steve.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In canon, Aultcray is severely antagonistic towards the Shield Hero but is a good husband and father and is ultimately a pawn to more villainous characters. Here, he's not only a willing partner with Balmus in taking down all the Four Heroes, but he's also actively opposing his wife and daughters.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Aultcray's actual name is Aultcray Zemo rather than his canon original name, Lüge Lansarz Faubrey.
  • Alternate Self: The Three Heroes revealed that they have their own Captain Americas from their respective worlds.
    • Ren's Captain America was thawed out in 1963 and eventually would die of old age.
    • Motoyasu's Captain America was thawed around the 1990s to early 2000s and took part in Civil War (2006).
    • Itsuki's Captain America is the Ultimate Marvel version and became the president of the United States.
  • And Then What?: Captain America points out to Fitoria that, even if the latter succeeds in killing all the current Four Heroes, Melromarc would still blindly follow the Three Heroes Church and ostracize the next Shield Hero. By the time she gets her expected outcome, the Waves would have already destroyed the world.
  • Ascended Extra: Ake, a Melromarc knight and a minor character, has a far greater role here as one of Captain America's team members.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Although Steve is a kind soul, he has his own resentments and issues which are brought out to the surface thanks to the Rage Shield.
  • Break the Haughty: Having spent the series being smug and self-righteous, the Three Heroes completely drop the bravado after losing their weapons and being on the verge to death's doors, showing them for the scared and pathetic children they truly are.
  • Cavalry Betrayal: A group of knights meet the Three Heroes, who believe they are their back-ups to help them against Captain America - only for the knights to strike them down instead.
  • Crossover Power Acquisition: Captain America acquires the Legendary Shield after being summoned to Melromarc.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Motoyasu's duel against Steve was basically an embarrassingly one-sided beatdown for him. To add insult to injury, Steve knocks Motoyasu around when he tries to grab his spear that was beneath Steve's foot.
  • Evil Doppelgänger: The Three Heroes perceived Steve to be this after being lied to by Malty. They even said that if there are good versions of Captain America in other universes, there have to be bad ones.
  • Famed In-Story: Captain America is regarded in all of the Three Heroes' worlds as a war hero.
  • Foil: Captain America is this to the Three Heroes. Cap is a trained soldier in his adult age while the Three Heroes are merely teenage high school students.
  • Humble Pie: Steve uses his duel against Motoyasu to be this as to show Motoyasu and the other Heroes just how out of depth they are. Too bad they don't learn.
  • Irony: The Three Heroes, especially Motoyasu, keep bring up the fact that Captain America is a Fish out of Temporal Water, when in truth he has a better grasp on the situation compared to them, who see everything about this world as a game.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Captain America had his Legendary Shield, only to lose it when he got summoned to Melromarc where he obtained the Legendary Shield.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Zemo has the Three Heroes tap into their weapons' Curse series and target Captain America so that both parties would be weakened, allowing him to steal their weapons.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • A few references to Captain America throughout the comics line including about Civil War (2006) and Ultimate Marvel. Ren's Captain America was unfrozen from the ice in 1963, the year Captain America returned to comics following his original run ending in the 1950.
    • Motoyasu's remark how all of Steve's power came from the super soldier serum is what Tony Stark has said to latter in The Avengers (2012).
    • A scene with Captain America and Aultcray is based on Avengers: Endgame, where the former calls the latter out for building a world out of blood with the villain saying no one will ever know because the heroes won't be alive to tell them.
  • Oh, Crap!: Ren has this when he realizes that it doesn't matter what he believes about Steve Rogers, the man is still THE Captain America.
  • Papa Wolf: The first time Steve saw Raphtalia, he was completely enraged and almost attempted to kill the slaver. Then after Motoyasu almost killed Raphtalia with his weapon, Steve throws the spear right back at him, landing right near Motoyasu's head before giving him and the other heroes a Death Glare that basically says "I'll put you into the ground permanently".
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Steve would not have the slave crest put onto Rapthalia, granting the girl independence.
    • The Three Heroes team up to kill Captain America only for Zemo and the Church to betray them and steal their weapons. Though the weapons are returned to them, they lost the gemstones within them, permanently revoking their status as Cardinal Heroes.
    • The other Nations summon new Heroes to aid Captain America. The Heroes summoned are Thor, Iron Man and Wolverine.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Captain America lays onto the Three Heroes on how much he sees them as the worst form of human beings who pretend to be heroes and are in fact just brainless pawns to be used.
  • Restored My Faith in Humanity: Raphtalia brought Steve back from despair following his ostracization by Melromarc.
  • Ship Tease: As Steve and Mirellia get to know one another, the two's feelings for each other are becoming more visible, especially since Aultcray abandoned the Royal family.
  • Taking You with Me: Unable to reason with the Three Heroes, Steve attempted to use the Iron Maiden on the Three Heroes and himself so that their deaths could allow new heroes to take their place. Then, Zemo intervened.
  • Team Member in the Adaptation: Ake, a Melromarc Knight, joins the Shield Hero's party.
  • That Man Is Dead: Aultcray solemnly says to Mirellia that the man she loved had died and what's left is Zemo.
  • This Cannot Be!: The Three Heroes and the kingdom have this when Steve grabbed Motoyasu's spear and threw it away, which was considered to be impossible.
  • Too Dumb to Live: It doesn't matter what the Three Heroes believed about Captain America, but engaging him in combat is pure idiocy, which the latter is more than happy to show why that is.
  • Wham Line: Zemo's true identity.
Captain America: So it's you. I can't say I'm surprised. You've been behind this all along haven't you, Your Highness?
  • What If?: The Captain America from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is summoned to Melromarc before he could be trapped in ice.
