That Catch in Your Throat
is an Encanto fanfic penned by NoonboryKedabory. It began publication on December 2nd, 2022.
In it, Bruno falls ill with a respiratory illness, which Sierra identifies as pneumonia. However, unlike that OTHER Kedabory fic where this happens, this one requires Isabela, Dolores, and Sierra to leave the village on a quest to Find the Cure!.
Tropes:
- Call-Back: When asked why she's so afraid of being outside the village, Sierra's response is "Srta. Portillo".
- Catch Your Death of Cold: Defied; when Sabrina expresses confusion about how Bruno could have a "cold" in the middle of spring, Sierra explains that colds are caused by viruses, not actually being cold.
- Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Sierra has these when she has to leave the village in search of the cure.
- Food as Bribe: Sierra lures Hombregrande into having a bath with an arepa.
- Food Shove Gag: Not so much "gag", as the scene is played seriously, but when Bruno backtracks and insists to the kids that he's fine, Julieta shuts him up with a spoonful of soup.
- Foul Medicine: Chapter 3 is all about this. In the beginning, Julieta gives Bruno medicine, which is described as burning his throat and tasting like rancid meat. Mirabel then tries various home remedies, all of which only make the problem worse.
- Hates Baths: Some of the rats, notable Bruno Jr. and Hombregrande, dislikes bathtime, and run away from Sierra and Sabrina when they're rounding them all up to have one.
- Nightmare Sequence: Chapter 5 opens with Bruno having a nightmare where he can't find Sierra.
- Nurse with Good Intentions: In Chapter 3, Mirabel attempts to help her uncle with various home remedies, none of which work (see Foul Medicine). Eventually, she gives up and goes to fetch the town doctor, Dr. Romano.
- Production Foreshadowing: In Chapter 1, the main character of Stefanie's book is named Sandrine. This would not be the last time that name cropped up in The Kedabory Verse.
- Shout-Out: In Chapter 2, Antonio mentions that Stefanie is going to read Matilda to him.
- Sick Episode: As described above, Bruno is struck down with pneumonia for the majority of the fic.
- Sickness Equals Redness: Bruno's face begins to go pink when he develops a fever.
- Soup Is Medicine: In the end segment of Chapter 2, Julieta makes Bruno soup.
- Take That, Audience!: When Bruno has a bath, the scene is pre-empted by Kedabory Breaking the Fourth Wall to inform "you weirdos" that there will be no description of Bruno's naked body.
