Even if I wasn't force to work here, I would have applied here anyway.
For those that have been save by me, we're the caged singing canaries for Crypton…
Rhapsody Atsume, Chapter 1
Synthesis is a Vocaloid fanfic written by Eric Philips. It was first published at 27 May 2009 and last updated at 11 November in the same year.

Vocaloids, or Loids for short, are former humans who was revived into human-like robots after death. They retains their original personality, but with the price that they are binded to a contract to Crypton as their singers. Rhapsody "Ras" Atsume, the operator of the technology, doesn't approve that and secretly trying to find a way to free them from their debts.

The fanfic could be read here.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • 1-Dimensional Thinking: Averted by Ras and Meiko, but played straight by Kaito. When Rin and Len try to run over them with a stolen steamroller in Chapter 4, Ras and Meiko quickly dodges to the side, but Kaito tries to outrun the vehicle instead. When he finally jumps to the side, his scarf got caught on the front wheel press and he ends up wrapped in his scarf.
  • Are You Sure You Want to Do That? : Ras always warns the Candidates if they're really sure to be synthesized and lost their humanity. The only exception is Miku because she was in coma.
  • Arc Words: "Cage". It shown how the Loids are forced to be in servitude for their company (Crypton in this case) as they were caged singing birds.
  • Artificial Human: The Loids are technically robots, yet they still need to rest and eat. They also practically indistinguishable from normal humans, except their eyes looks unnaturally glossy at close.
  • Back from the Dead: Unlike other Loids, Luka did die during the synthesizing process. The program did resurrect her, but it causes memory problems.
  • Black Box: No one, even Ras himself, fully understands how the Synthesizer machine work.
  • Declaration of Protection: Len swears to protect Rin since the day her mother trusted him to take care of Rin if something happens to herself.
  • Just a Machine: Most of the Crypton staff see the Loids as nothing but singing robots, much to Ras' consternation.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Len cuts his own stomach open to make himself compatible with the Kagamine program and save Rin.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Len. He is the only son of one of richest enterpreneur in Tokyo and they're always isolated him from the outside world. The only friend he ever had was Rin and that because they took him on the park when he's little.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Hatsune means "First Voice". Miku is Crypton's first Vocaloid that manages to reach a popstar status.
    • Kagamine means "Mirror Voice". After being synthesized, Len looks like a male version of Rin. The color of his hair and eyes now matches with Rin's.
    • Atsume means "Collector".Ras is tasked on collecting Candidates and he himself is a Vocaloid.
  • Meaningful Rename: After being synthesized, a Loid's surname is replaced with the name of the program used. This indicates they're not a human anymore.
  • Not So Above It All: Ras might be a serious person at most of the time, but that doesn't stop him from packaging his notes inside a metal box to Troll Kaito.
  • Security Cling: Miku instictually cling onto Meiko's arm as Len recount the time Rin got shot.
  • Soap Opera Disease : Miku caught the same deadly illness that took her parents and also her voice. Before being synthesized, she have been in coma for four months.
  • Sole Survivor: Miku is the only one of her family who survives from an unnamed disease.
  • The Speechless: Miku. She lost her voice to her illness. As a Loid, she can speak again, but that isn't her original voice.
  • Switching P.O.V.: The narrator's point-of-view keeps switching between Ras and the Loids.
  • Shopping Cart Antics : In chapter 4, Rin and Len ride on a shopping cart as they causing chaos in local streets.
  • Taking the Bullet : Rin shielded Len from a bounty hunter and got fatally shot at her shoulders.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Resident Butt-Monkey Kaito really loves ice creams, especially the Häagen-Dazs brand. This becomes a Running Gag where Kaito always buys an ice cream whenever he has the chance, much to Rhapsody and Meiko's consternation.
  • Uncanny Valley: In-Universe example. Miku unintentionally scares several of her future classmates in Chapter 2 because she accidentally screeches as she hasn't used to speaking after being mute for years.
  • We Can Rebuild Him: The basic premise of the Synthesis technology is to convert a dying human (or a pair for the Kagamine program) into a robot.
  • You Are the New Trend: Miku accidentally inspires a headset trend at her school.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: In chapter 4, this is how Ras react when he saw Rin and Len rampaging on the streets with a steamroller.
