Fanfic / quiet like a fight

Go To

Ray: You aren’t worried?
Zack: Pfft. It’s not like any Hero ever caught me before, is it?

The odyssey of Rachel Gardner, who isn't actually as Quirkless as she once thought, and has zero regrets against using that to get what she wants.

Being stuck in Japan is a bit more of a hurdle than a death sentence and a high-security institution, but she and Zack have dealt with steeper odds, she's pretty sure. Plus Ultra, as they say.

quiet like a fight is a Crossover fanfic written by shanatical. It combines the universes of My Hero Academia and Angels of Death.

quiet like a fight contains examples of:

  • The Ace: Rachel is seen as near perfect by her classmates, and it’s not hard to see why: she’s smart, pretty, foreign, athletic, got first place on the practical exam, has a decent sized friend group, is surprisingly good with words, isn’t at all weighed down by her Dark and Troubled Past, can square up and shoot a villain before telling him off to his face, downs a Nomu by jumping off a roof and stabbing it, and to top it all off, she did this while supposedly quirkless.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Rachel saves three people during the entrance exam, and later shoots Shigaraki to protect Momo. Though how much of this is due to the self-inflicted brainwashing or Rachel's tendency to respond violently to traumatic situations is open to interpretation.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Endeavor berates Rachel's perceived quirklessness at the Sports Festival. Rachel's response stuns him into silence. After all, having Shoto defeat All Might in rankings for him only means Endeavor himself is knocked down to third place, still below All Might.
Rachel: When did you give up?
  • Badass Adorable: Rachel is noted by multiple people to be delicate, pretty, and doll-like. She also earns the top spot in the practical entrance exam with eighty-three points, takes down Bakugou in a training exercise, wins said training exercise with what is effectively a mock murder-suicide, and shoots Shigaraki three times.
  • Badass Boast: Rachel finishes her speech with one of these at the UA entrance ceremony:
Rachel: I’m the representative of our year. I scored fourth on the paper exam and first on the practical. You just lost your excuses.
  • Batman Gambit: Rachel and Momo pull off one of these during the Hero-Villain battle training exercise.
  • Birds of a Feather: Rachel and Todoroki bond over their respective abusive childhoods.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Ray's across-the-hall neighbor in her apartment complex turns out to be Todoroki's older brother Natsuo, as she discovers after she lets Todoroki crash at her place after the Sports Festival.
  • The Comically Serious: Ray, as you could expect, often has a deadpan reaction to everything going on around her.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: While rather neutral herself on the matter, the other UA students are horrified when they learn about Rachel's past during a class assignment. And that's not even the full story.
  • Death Seeker: Rachel still wants to be killed by Zack, even after discovering that she cannot be killed due to her Resurrective Immortality Quirk.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Admittedly more along the lines of "Did You Just Flip Off the Number 2 Hero?", but Rachel shows Endeavor zero respect after learning about his home life from Todoroki.
  • Flat "What": Many a student who knows Ray personally has a reaction like this in regards to Ray's actions.
Shinsou: Gardner I know I say this a lot because of you but
Shinsou: from the deepest depths of my heart
    Shinsou: what the ACTUAL fuck
  • Irony: The girl with a death wish has a quirk that makes her immortal.
  • No Medication for Me: As part of her self-inflicted brainwashing, Rey typically flushes her medication. It...does not exactly help with her mental state, as one could guess. Though her interactions with Todoroki and others eventually convince her to start taking it again.
  • One-Steve Limit: Played With. Ray's nickname, in katakana, is spelled as Rei, as such, had Natsuo commenting that it gets confusing since the name of his and Shouto's mother is Rei.
  • Precision F-Strike: Directed at Shigaraki, when the League of Villains attacks USJ.
Rachel: Don't touch Momo, you stupid fuck.
  • Public Secret Message: Rachel's speech at the beginning of the Sports Festival comes across as a meaningful continuation of her entrance ceremony speech to Izuku. It's a call to Zack to let him know where she is.
  • Resurrective Immortality: Rachel’s quirk. Doubles as a form of Hybrid Power as it's a combination of her parents' quirks. Her mother's Quirk could make wilted flowers come back to life, while her father's quirk can make bruises disappear.
  • Secret-Keeper: Todoroki is the only one to know about the real circumstances of Ray's Dark and Troubled Past. Played With, however, that Ray hasn't told him everything about her story and events that occurred in Angels of Death.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Bakugou is implied to be aware of the truth about Ray's family situation, something that Ray has yet to tell anyone else other than Todoroki, and kept quiet.
  • Shout-Out: Rachel comments after hearing him speak in English class that Bakugou sounds like a friend of hers. The joke being he and Zack share the same Seiyuu, Nobuhiko Okamoto.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Ray has long decided Zack, and only Zack, can kill her. As such, she gets angry at Shigaraki when he declared that he'll kill her.
  • Tranquil Fury: Ray's reaction when Shigaraki declares that he'll kill her. Even Kurogiri becomes horrified at her when she said the following.
Rachel: …you think… you’re the one that gets to kill me?
  • Unreliable Narrator: Rachel sometimes misses social cues due to her upbringing or delusion, such as missing Hitoshi having swollen eyes because he cried when learning about her past.
