Power Rangers: Element Fury
is a fanfic created by is a fanfic created by Equestrian Defender, creator of EQuestria Girls Marvel Universe and The Kingdomverse, that adapts characters from My Little Pony: Equestria Girls and puts them into the Power Rangers universe. It can also be read on Archive of our Own here.
Chosen by the Elemental Gems, Flash Sentry, Twilight Sparkle, Soarin Skies, Thorax Beetles, and Tempest Shadow, must come together to save the world from the King of Shadows and his Dark Army, as the Power Rangers: Element Fury!
This fanfic contains examples of the following tropes:
- Adaptational Badass: Flash Sentry in canon is one of the supporting characters, with no magic of his own. Here, he becomes the Elemental Fury Red Ranger, fighting against dark forces and gains his own powerful fire magic.
- Adaptational Personality Change: In canon, Sci-Twi was a very shy individual who didn't have any friends before coming to CHS and focused almost entirely on her studies, similar to her pony counterpart before making her own friends. Here, she starts out much more outspoken, being friends with Thorax and Tempest Shadow at Crystal Prep and quickly making friends with Flash and Soarin after meeting them. She also is willing to go to even greater extremes than in canon, casually hacking into a satellite to help Sunset find her missing friends, while remarking that doing so is only "illegal" if she gets caught. She also got expelled from CPA for accidentally flooding the school when she made a mistake when trying to prank the girl's soccer team.
- Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Tempest ruffles her friend Coco's hair when returning her charm bracelet to her.
- Affectionate Nickname: The Rangers all give their Zords nicknames. (Technically their actual names, since they didn't have any until they met their Rangers, but still.)
- Flash names the Red Lion Zord Leo.
- Twilight names the Blue Turtle Zord Splash.
- Soarin names the Green Eagle Zord Aquila.
- Thorax names the Yellow Beetle Zord Stag.
- Tempest names the Pink Wolf Zord Bolt.
- Alternate Universe Fic: The Equestria Girls world takes place in the same world as the Power Rangers, with several characters becoming the newest team of Rangers.
- Animal Mecha: All of the Rangers zords are based off of animals. And like with all Power Rangers seasons, they are color-coded for your convenience.
- Animal-Motif Team: All of the Rangers have animal based Zords, which are reflected in the helmets of their suits.
- Ascended Fanboy: Thorax has been a big fan of the Power Rangers, ever since he was a kid and saw the first footage of the Jungle Fury Rangers in action, and even makes a blog about the various Ranger teams. He is made the Yellow Element Fury Ranger.
- Be Yourself: Flash learns this lesson, that should try to be the Red Ranger his own way instead of trying to live up to previous ones.
- Big Bad: The King of Shadows.
- Big Eater: Soarin has a very big appetite. When Flash takes him to Sugarcube Corner he orders a quintuple burger with extra fries, and two large chocolate milkshakes. Shortly after they get their food he dives right in, making a huge dent in his burger and fries and completely finishing one of his milkshakes in moments.
- Breaking Old Trends: Enforced by the Rangers themselves. After Thorax reviews his Morphin Blog everyone realizes how often previous Ranger teams have had at least one member become Brainwashed and Crazy and cause massive problems for everyone. They decide to prevent this by having Clover cast several protection spells on them to make them Immune to Mind Control.
- Casual Danger Dialogue: When Tempest confronts a group of thugs that stole Coco's charm bracelet, she stops for a moment while threatening them to answer a phone-call from Sci-Twi. As soon as she is done she continues where she left off against the thugs, like nothing happened.
- Childhood Friends: Flash and Soarin were best friends during childhood and were practically inseperable, until Flash's family moved to Canterlot a year ago. Soarin ends up moving to Canterlot himself when his uncle loses his old job and finds an opening in Canterlot, and the two friends quickly start catching up together.
- Combining Mecha: As per usual for every Power Rangers team, their Zords have the ability to combine together and form a Megazord.
- Crazy-Prepared: When Clover is casting several protection spells and runes on the Rangers to protect them from instances of being mind controlled, she makes sure to cover all other bases by also protecting their emotions from being manipulated, their minds from being swapped with a monsters’, or having their memories erased. Clover also included protection wards that stops a demon or evil spirit from possessing their souls. She admits it might not be necessary but decides to be better safe than sorry.
- Defeat Means Explosion: Just like in any Power Rangers series, the Monster of the Week suffers from this twice when defeated, the first when beaten at their normal size and the second when fighting the Megazord.
- Dope Slap: Soarin is hit on the head several times for making dumb comments, either by his friends or even by Clover the Clever using her staff on him. These are all played for laughs like Amusing Injuries.
- Elemental Powers: The Rangers all gain elemental magic from bonding with the Elemental Gems.
- Flash gains fire magic from the Element of Courage.
- Sci-Twi gains water magic from the Element of Knowledge.
- Soarin gains wind magic from the Element of Determination.
- Thorax gains earth magic from the Element of Strength.
- Tempest gains lightning magic from the Element of Faith.
- Facial Horror: Flash burns the left half of Nevermore's face during a battle with him, leaving a mask mark on the entire left side of his face, including his eye turning to ash.
- Fangirl: It turns out that Sunset Shimmer is a big one to Clover the Clever. When she meets Clover with the Rangers, she lets out a huge squee that makes everyone cover their ears and would have shattered all the glass if Clover hadn't magically enchanted them to prevent that from happening.
- Genre Savvy: Soarin supports the idea of protecting themselves from being mind controlled since it is not just a common occurrence to the Power Rangers, but a common theme in various comic books too.
- Groin Attack: Flash does this to Nevermore when he fights him alone, in order to escape from him and help the others fight Razor.
- Heh Heh, You Said "X": When Sci-Twi mentions that she has read enough Daring Do books to know that if something doesn't look booby-trapped then it is usually booby-trapped, Soarin chuckles and says to Tempest "she said traps".
- Hero with Bad Publicity: Downplayed with Flash. He isn't hated exactly, but some comments about him on the Morphin Blog are very insulting, comparing him to previous Red Rangers.
- Heroic Willpower: During Clover the Clever's final battle against the King of Shadows, she was critically injured by his final attack, but still managed to set up a crystal tree to protect the gems and crawl all the way back to her base to cast a healing spell on herself through pure willpower.
- If Only You Knew: When Sci-Twi says that her research on the energy from CHS is still going nowhere, Tempest encourages her by saying that "maybe the answers might come walking through that door", right before Flash and Soarin walk into Sugarcube Corner, and Sci-Twi quickly overhears their conversation about CHS.
- Insistent Terminology: When Tempest says that she, Sci-Twi, and Thorax were expelled from Crystal Prep, Thorax says that only she and Sci-Twi were expelled, he asked for a transfer.
- It Can Think: When everyone meets their Zords, they are surprised when the Zords show they are capable of talking and have personalities.
- Make My Monster Grow: As is the tradition with every villain in Power Rangers history, the defeated Monster of the Week is able to be brought back and enlarged due to Blast Radius using a spell called "Shadow Resurrection".
- Mistaken Identity: Similar to canon, Flash briefly mistakes Sci-Twi for Princess Twilight when he first meets her. Unlike in canon though, he just as quickly spots the differences between the two counterparts and realizes this sin't the same Twilight, saying he mistook her for someone else. Doesn't stop him from making friends with this version of her though.
- Mythology Gag: There are numerous references made to previous Power Rangers teams, all of which help establish this as being in the same universe as the Power Rangers series.
- It is referenced in the first chapter references the various evils that previous teams of Rangers have fought. This includes aliens (Mighty Morphin, In Space, Ninja Storm, Megaforce), monsters, demons (Lightspeed Rescue, Jungle Fury, Samurai), and evil sentient robots (Zeo, Beast Morphers).
- Thorax name drops the Jungle Fury Rangers as the first team of Rangers he saw and his inspiration.
- Comments on the Morphin Blog compare Flash to previous Red Rangers, like Carter Grayson and Wes Collins.
- The fight at the Canterlot Museum includes an exhibit with skeletons of the dinosaurs that were used as the Zords for the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
- Plucky Comic Relief: Soarin cracks a lot of jokes and often suffers Amusing Injuries from his annoyed friends for it. His Zord even calls him the "comic relief Ranger".
- Punch a Wall: When Sunset is upset over her friends being targeted due to their magic, and blames herself for bringing magic to the world in the first place, she punches a wall made of pure stone, breaking her hand in the process. Before she can do anymore damage to herself, Clover the Clever quickly puts her to sleep with a spell, and manages to heal her hand with a healing spell.
- Pungeon Master: Soarin loves makes puns, almost nonstop, much to the annoyance of the other Rangers.
- Punny Name: A giant humanoid Raven monster is named Nevermore, an obvious reference to The Raven. Flash even lampshades this by saying he was named after one of the works of Edgar Allan Poe.
- Recruit Teenagers with Attitude: The Element Fury Rangers, consisting of Flash, Sci-Twi, Soarin, Thorax, and Tempest, are chosen by the Elemental Gems to wield their power because the Gems deemed each of them worthy due to each of the embodying one of their specific traits in their personality, courage, knowledge, determination, strength, and faith.
- Red Is Heroic: Flash Sentry is chosen as the Red Ranger, due to being chosen by the Fire Elemental Gem. He is also the first of the Rangers to agree to fight the King of Shadows and his forces after Clover the Clever explains everything to them, saying he can't just stand by and let people get hurt when he can do something, with his declaration quickly getting the others to agree as well.
- Reformed, but Rejected: Even after she helped save everyone from the Sirens in Rainbow Rocks, there are still some that refuse to forgive Sunset for her past and still hate her, as shown when her locker is vandalized with the message DIE SHE-DEMON in permanent marker.
- Right Behind Me: When Flash explains the magic at CHS to Sci-Twi and her friends, he mentions how he hopes Sunset won't get too mad at him for telling them about it. When everyone starts asking what Sunset looks like, while giving accurate descriptions of her appearance, he quickly realizes she is standing right behind him.
- Shout-Out:
- When the Rangers first obtain their gems and get their magic, Thorax comments how he feels like he could go three rounds with All Might.
- The Raven monster is named Nevermore. Flash even lampshades this by name-dropping Edgar Allan Poe.
- When Clover the Clever explains the Morphing Grid to everyone, Soarin jokes that the Power Rangers basically get their power from the Force.
- When Twilight's Turtle Zord, Splash, engages battle mode he reveals he has two silver cannons hidden away in his shell. Congratulations, Twilight! Your Turtle Zord just evolved into a Blastoise.
- When the Rangers form the Megazrod for the first time, Clover the Clever cheers in joy and shouts "YOU GUYS ARE SO SCREWED NOW!"
- When Clover casts her protection spells on everyone to make them Immune to Mind Control, she assures them there is no way any creature The King of Shadows controls could get through them unless they were on par or stronger than someone like Professor X or Martian Manhunter.
- Serpentra quotes Jafar when Flash calls her a snake, saying "Let me ssshow you jusssst how SSSSSNAKE-LIKE I CAN BE!!!!"
- Sole Survivor: Clover the Clever was part of the original team of Elemental Fury Power Rangers, but she was the only one who survived the final battle against the King of Shadows.
- Swallowed Whole: Flash is swallowed whole by Serpentra in their first fight. But, he thankfully gets out by using his fire magic to force her to vomit him up. He is still grossed out by the disgusting experience though.
- Take That!:
- The Rangers all agree that the unfortunately named Twilight books are awful, saying they butcher vampire mythology to the point they don't even think they deserved to be called vampires.
- Thorax says if he could control what everyone posts on his blog, nobody would be allowed to say anything about the Operation Overdrive Rangers, often considered to be one of the worst seasons.
- Wake Up, Go to School & Save the World: The Rangers still need to go to school, even if they are superheroes saving the world from dark forces. The day they become Rangers is actually the day before Sci-Twi, Thorax, and Tempest start going to CHS.
