Fanfic / Pinkie Personalities

Go To

Pinkie doesn't tell ponies about Pinkamena and Surprise. The doctors said that they were bad for her, that they were a disease, but she disagrees. Sure, Pinkamena's a bit of a grumpy-pants, but she's still a great friend! She's often the voice of reason to counter-act some of the other two's crazier ideas, after all. Surprise, on the other hand, is a great prank-player, and always up for some fun. She's more like Pinkie, only more hyper. Both are great fun to be around, and they get on well.

Thing is, she knows that if she told ponies about them, then they would be dragged back to the hospital. And then be 'treated' again. None of them want that. Because of this, not even her best not-in-head friends know about them. The three of them have, for years now, been careful enough to keep the existence of Pinkamena and Surprise secret.

This has, of course, gone out the window now that Twilight is hammering on the door after overhearing one third of a conversation, with no sign of anyone else talking.

The story is posted here.

Pinkie Personalities contains examples of:

  • Anxiety Dreams: Pinkie has one after she reads the letter from Princess Celestia informing her that Neuron Probe escaped from prison.
  • Bedlam House: Pinkie’s time spent in a psychiatric hospital was this from her perspective, putting her through endless tests and therapy sessions to try and “fix” her. And then there was Neuron Probe.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Pinkie, Surprise, and Pinkamena start wearing different colors bands to signify who’s in control at the moment. This is mainly for Surprise and Pinkie, due to their being almost no differences between them.
  • Expressive Hair: Pinkie's hair deflates when her emotions become very negative.
  • Freudian Trio: Surprise is the id, somehow being an even more hyper version of Pinkie. Pinkie is the ego, being slightly more grounded than Surprise. Pinkamena is the superego, being the Only Sane Man of the three.
  • Genki Girl: Pinkie Pie is definitely this, Surprise even more so.
  • Heroic BSoD: Pinkie had a severe mental breakdown after all of the torture she went through at the hospital (especially at Neuron Probe's hooves), so much so that it actually created Pinkamena, who had to live in her place until everything was solved. Happens again in the present, when Twilight delivers to her the bad news that Neuron Probe escaped from prison, causing her to be overwhelmed with a deluge of nasty flashbacks.
  • Just Think of the Potential!: Neuron Probe was obsessed with Pinkie because of the possibilities studying her presented. Such as the better treatments for other DID patients or the ability to give others desirable personality traits. Though he also stood to benefit from the fame and fortune that would follow from said discoveries.
  • Letting Her Hair Down: This happens whenever Pinkamena is in control. It's her defining visual trait compared to her two counterparts.
  • Mad Doctor: Neuron Probe. He actively used electroconvulsive therapy on a foal (without anesthetic), among other terrible acts.
  • Mythology Gag: Surprise is based both on one of the main characters in G1, and on the G4 character of the same name, who was one of the main characters in Lauren Faust's original concept art for the show until it was discovered that Hasbro had lost the trademark for her name; she was subsequently replaced with Pinkie Pie.
  • Only Sane Man: Pinkamena is this to Pinkie Pie and Surprise.
  • Reality Warper: Pinkie is one, though more specifically Pinkie and Surprise are. Pinkamena technically isn’t one but can use said abilities due to sharing a body with the other two, but she is simply too logical to properly use them. Her attempt at using said abilities to escape from Neuron Probe results in her nearly ripping a hole in the fabric of reality.
  • Revenge Myopia: Neuron Probe wants revenge on Pinkie was ruining his career and living a happy life while he rotted in prison…completely ignoring that he experimented and tortured her For Science!.
  • Split Personality: The main premise of the story. Pinkie has three distinct personalities, all of whom can talk freely in their shared mind and switch who's in charge of the body (the one in control must willingly give up control though; the others can't forcibly take over). The trio are more balanced than most split personalities; Pinkamena suspects that Pinkie's brain being physically wired differently is what allows this, causing she and Surprise having access to a full range of emotions rather than just one or two each.
    • The personalities are: Pinkie Pie (the original), the more playful Surprise (born from the conflict between boring monotony and the sudden, overwhelming happiness when she saw the Sonic Rainboom and the events that followed) and the calmer, more serious Pinkamena (born to shield Pinkie and Surprise from the pain and suffering they were being put through by an unscrupulous psychiatrist). Pinkie regards the other two as her closest friends, and the doctors and Pinkie's own family have long since accepted that the two exist and aren't dangerous to her or anypony else.
  • Split-Personality Makeover: Pinkie's appearance changes subtly whenever she changes who's in control. Surprise makes her hair wilder and poofier, Pinkamena has the "deflated" style, and the original is somewhere in between.
  • Talking to Themself: Pinkie, Surprise and Pinkamena are perfectly capable of conversing entirely inside their shared head. However, whichever one is in charge sometimes talks back out loud, which leads to Twilight discovering their secret.
  • Trauma Button: Rarity accidentally hits Pinkie’s after the latter reveals her personalities, by telling her she needs to go to a psychiatric hospital. This forces Pinkamena to briefly take over while Pinkie has a freak out.
