Fanfic / Oversoul

Go To

Oversoul is an ongoing Shaman King Fan Fic written by author macaroosh. It was originally published in 2010, however the author took a long hiatus, leaving the story untouched for years. The author officially returned in 2015, deleting all the original chapters and giving the whole story a reboot. As of December 2015, it has 22 chapters.

The story takes place in the universe of the original manga, albeit with the addition of the author's Original Character Asakura Kali, Asakura Yoh's little sister. Throughout the story, the readers get to know Kali and explore her complicated relationships with the Big Bad Hao and The Stoic Tao Ren, as well as go through her struggles to become a strong, independent shaman, with many, many bumps along the way.

It has been well-received by most readers for the accurate portrayals of the original characters, while at the same time painting them in a different light. The author usually uses the manga, as well as some parts of the anime, as her references.

The story can be found here.

Examples:

  • Afraid of Blood: Kali doesn't seem to be afraid of blood per se, but watching bloody, gruesome shaman fights makes her highly uncomfortable.
  • All Periods Are PMS: In Chapter 9, towards the end, Kali finally realizes why she's been so irritable all day: she got her first ever period.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Ren and Kali usually spend most of their time getting on each other's nerves or having heavy make out sessions (which are mostly for the sake of shutting Kali up), but there are many moments that show that they really do like each other. Most of the time.
  • Beautiful Dreamer: Ren is revealed to have watched Kali slept more than once without Kali ever finding out. Though instead of looking at how cute and peaceful she is, which is the usual example for this trope, he instead observes other things, such as the 'ugly way her mouth hangs open'. But considering it's Ren, he probably secretly thinks it's cute anyway. Whether this is played for a creepy effect or a sweet, romantic one is up for debate.
  • Befriending the Enemy: Kali considered Hao her friend when she was little, up until he killed someone in front of her, traumatizing her and causing her to stop thinking of him as a friend. Most of the time, Hao is very amicable towards her, while Kali is constantly trying to get away from him.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Kali and Ren have a lot of this going on, before and after their Relationship Upgrade (if you could call it that).
    • Kali also has a lot with Hao.
  • Betty and Veronica: It's hard to say, since both Ren and Hao could qualify for a Veronica. But in terms of morals, Ren is the Betty and Hao is the Veronica to Kali's Archie. But when you consider the fact that Hao has taken care of her almost all her life, despite being a homicidal maniac, he becomes the Betty to Ren's Veronica, as Ren is more brash, aloof and had every intention of killing her the first time they met.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Yoh is usually very laid-back, but his instinct to protect his sister will come up the second he senses she’s in danger.
    • Seeing as Kali's the only girl in the group and the youngest (though she's the same age as Ren and Lyserg), all of them seem to have this towards her. It's been stated that whenever Yoh isn't there to save her ass, Horohoro or Ryu usually step in.
  • Break the Cutie: Hao managed to do this to Kali with the influence of his power and a little mind manipulation.
  • Break-Up/Make-Up Scenario: When Ren went to retrieve Kali from Hao's base, the scene seemed to be leading up to this trope, but it's subverted. Things stay the same between them-they neither break up or make up, as they're not actually officially together.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Ren and Kali.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Hao is very flirty with his adoptive sister. Of course, both Hao and Kali know they're not blood related , but if you really think about it, it can get very squicky.
    • Now it's been taken to another level. It's heavily implied in Chapter 21 that they started sleeping together. Yoh gets a little unsettled just seeing Kali wearing Hao's poncho.
  • Brother–Sister Team: Averted. Yoh and Kali are on opposing teams.
    • Hao and Kali. Though not really, as Hao placed Kali in Team Hana-Gumi, but they're still on the same side.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: The closest Kali ever got to doing this was when she told Mikihisa "[Hao] was there for me more than you ever were".
  • Can't Catch Up: Both Ren and Kali feel this way towards Yoh. Hao even pointed out that it's one of their many similarities.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Kali got drunk after taking just a few sips of one beer. Perhaps partly justified, as it was Kali's first ever time trying beer.
  • Children Are Innocent: Averted for the most part, if you consider fourteen-year-olds as children. Ren and Kali are the youngest in the group (though only a year younger than most of their friends), but they both actively participate in violent fights, they swear like sailors, they stole a beer once and have many heavy and probably not age-appropriate make out sessions.
    • Heck, Yoh and Anna are only about a year older than them and they already have a bun in the oven.
  • Childhood Friend: No matter how much Kali would hate to admit it, Hao is hers.
    • Jeanne and Kali as well. Even though they only met one time through a chance meeting, they seemed to remain on decent terms when they saw each other again.
  • The Confidant: Once they started warming up to each other, Ren and Kali became each other's.
    • Hao seemed to be this to Kali growing up, besides Yoh.
  • The Corrupter: Hao to Kali.
  • Crazy Jealous Girl: Kali does not react well to finding out how Ren was resurrected.
  • Daddy Issues: Both Kali and Ren deal with these.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Chi definitely has one.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Kali. And Ren, of course.
    • Chi has her moments as well.
  • "Dear John" Letter: Ren sort of receives one from Kali. Kali leaves him a letter revealing that she left to join Hao's side, but when he confronts her later on, she says she doesn't want things to change between them. As of now, their relationship is in an ambiguous state.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Ren has gone a long way since Kali first met him, but she's still trying to cut through that icy exterior of his.
  • The Determinator: Hao has been trying to recruit Kali ever since they were five. It's kind of creepy, but still shows determination nevertheless.
    • He may have finally succeeded in Chapter 18.
  • Doorstop Baby: Kali is revealed to have been one.
  • Driven to Suicide: How Chi died and became a spirit.
  • Embarrassing First Name: Chikushou, Chi's full name, sounds very similar (and is even spelled like) a Japanese swear word. Kali even pointed this out when they first met. As a result, she usually goes by Chi.
  • Emotionally Tongue-Tied: Ren is starting to show shades of this.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Kali is starting to show shades of this.
  • First-Name Basis: Kali calls her older brother Yoh by his first name, rather than traditionally using an honorific like 'onii-chan'. However, it's shown in a flashback that she did used to call him 'onii-chan' when they were little. It's unknown exactly when she stopped, but it was probably when she found out she was adopted.
  • Five-Finger Discount: Because of Hao, Kali went through a brief shoplifting streak when she was younger.
  • Foreshadowing: Chi mentioned feeling a presence similar to Lyserg's spirit Morphin at the X-Laws' site, and it's later revealed that Lyserg had joined the X-Laws. Though if you've already read the manga or watched the anime, you would've seen that coming.
  • Forgot About the Mind Reader: Kali curses herself for always forgetting that Hao can read her mind. She's actively trying to find a way to block her thoughts from him but unfortunately it's easier said than done.
  • Formula-Breaking Episode: Chapter 18 is written in a different style than the other chapters, as the scenes are much shorter and purposely leaves a lot of questions in the air.
  • Four-Girl Ensemble: Team Hana-Gumi after Kali joins. Kali doesn't seem to spend much time with them though.
  • Friends with Benefits: Kali and Ren aren't technically in a relationship, so they could be considered as this. Though they obviously see each other as more than just a friend.
  • Friendless Background: It's often stated that before Kali and Yoh met everyone else, they were each other's only friends. It got to the point that Kali was furious with him when he went to Funbari Hills alone, which leaving her by herself.
  • Green Eyes, Take Warning: When Kali's eyes turn green, it's an indication that Chi is inside her and that you should run.
  • Glurge Addict: Kali seems to have shades of this. She goes crazy over bunnies and is overly enamored whenever Ren does something that's even the slightest bit nice. (Though given it's Ren, it's a little understandable...)
  • Guilty Pleasure: Kali loves bunnies. And you would think Ren would make fun of her for it, but instead he brought her to a pet store after hours to look at them.
  • Happily Adopted: Kali doesn't particularly mind the fact that she's adopted. She does get pretty upset when somebody points it out to her though.
  • Happy Flashback: Some of the scenes in Chapter 7.
  • Hates Being Touched: Ren is this apparently, which is why Kali was so surprised to discover that he liked kissing.
  • Hell Hound: Kali's new spirit guardians, a Christmas gift from Hao.
  • Heroic BSoD: Kali has one when Ren is horrifically impaled right in front of her. She's so distraught that she couldn't even bring herself to fight alongside Horohoro and Chocolove.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Kali and Chi. Though that's sort of a given, as Chi is Kali's spirit guardian.
    • Not anymore, as of Chapter 20.
  • Hollywood Kiss: Averted. Ren and Kali are said to often have spontaneous, uncoordinated kisses.
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: Even Ren and Kali aren't an exception to teenage hormones.
    • Not even Hao is either, apparently.
Turbine: Behind that great power and tremendous fear he induces, he's also a teenage boy with hormones.
  • Hypocrite: Ren calls Kali out on being one, as she often berates him for being a closed book when she isn't so open about herself all the time either.
  • Insult of Endearment: Kali and Ren call each other nasty names very often.
  • It Gets Easier: Kali was visibly shaken after her first kill, but not long after, she actually starts looking for people to kill, basically just For the Evulz.
  • It Runs in the Family: Lampshaded. Apparently the attraction to violent psychopaths runs in the Asakura family. (Yoh to Anna, Kali to Ren)
  • The Lad-ette: Kali has shades of this.
  • Lonely Together: Kali and Yoh were this when they were kids.
  • Love Confession: The closest thing Kali has gotten to this (so far, at least) is telling Ren that she really, really likes him. And the closest Ren got to saying it back is calling her a crazy bitch.
    • In Chapter 20, Kali finally tells him she loves him. Though not directly.
  • Love Epiphany: Kali has one that lasts for a span of a few chapters. She often muses on how she used to detest him, but is now in love with all of his flaws.
  • Make-Out Kids: Kali and Ren, though they prefer doing it in private. This doesn't keep the others from finding out though, as Ren is apparently very bad (or perhaps he just doesn't try at all) at hiding hickeys.
  • Make-Out Point: Ren and Kali have one. It's also the same place where they go just to be alone and talk and eat together.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Hao, of course.
  • The Masochism Tango: Hao and Kali.
    • To a lesser extent, Ren and Kali.
  • Master of the Mixed Message: Ren, which is the cause of many arguments between him and Kali.
  • Mood-Swinger: Kali is prone to this at times, much to Ren's disdain.
  • Morality Chain: It seems Kali is starting to be one for Ren.
    • And since she switched sides, it seems Ren is starting to be one for her as well.
  • Most Common Card Game: The very first scene in the first chapter has Anna and Kali playing a game of Go Fish.
  • Must Not Die a Virgin: Ren and Kali try to have their first time together with the same intent that Yoh and Anna had (to bear an heir to the Tao family). (Or so they claim.) They don't succeed.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: To date, Yoh has punched both Chocolove and Ryu in the face for hitting on his sister. He doesn't seem to mind her and Ren being together though.
  • Mythology Gag: In one chapter, Kali said she would be good for Ren as she's shorter than him and she's only sometimes annoying. Ren later reiterates this. In the official Shaman King character book, in the interview part, when asked what he would look for in a girl, this is exactly what Ren says.
  • Near-Death Experience: Kali has one in Chapter 7. The Great Spirit's visions were too powerful for her and she almost didn't make it, to the point that Magna, one of the Patch Officiants, was preparing a body bag for her. Hao even showed up to make sure she woke up.
  • No Periods, Period: Averted. Kali had her first during a particularly bad day.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Hao, very much so, when it comes to Kali.
  • Not a Date: Ren and Kali have gone on many "non-dates".
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Hao seems to think that he and Kali are this, as they were both considered a "demon child".
  • Not So Stoic: "Ren has very subtle, very brief, very few moments of vulnerability." And Kali always makes sure to be there for him when he shows them.
  • Not Blood Siblings: Kali and Yoh (and by technicality, Hao).
  • Oh, Crap!: Kali's reaction when she realized Mikihisa had been following her.
  • Older Than They Look: Chi died as a teenager and retained her youthful appearance in the afterlife. She's mentioned having been dead for a decade.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Chi, whose real name is Chikushou.
    • It seems that Kali is just a nickname as well. Mikihisa, her adoptive father calls her Katsumi.
    • Only Mikihisa (and presumably other family members) still calls Kali by her real name. It's later revealed that the reason she's called Kali is because she could never pronounce Katsumi right as a child and so Yoh gave her an easier name to say.
    • Of course, Katsumi is the name Kali's adoptive family gave her. Nobody knows what her real birth name is, not even Hao. Oddly enough, Hao knew her real birth date though.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: Chi has a tendency to do this. Kali even calls it her specialty.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: Kali has a lot in Chapter 20 to show how Hao had succeeded in manipulating her.
  • Parental Neglect: Yoh and Kali both suffered this from their father, though Kali is noticeably more resentful about it than Yoh is.
  • Picky Eater: Kali learns to tolerate Chinese food, but particularly doesn't like stinky tofu. However, she doesn't actually hate Chinese food, but she, along with Horohoro and Chocolove, are just sick of it because Ren makes them eat it all the time.
  • Playing with Fire: It's revealed in a flashback that Hao taught Kali how to manipulate air to produce fire. Over the years, she has probably repressed this ability, most probably because it was Hao who taught it to her, however it's briefly implied that the ability is coming back, or at least was awoken while she was going through a traumatic event.
  • Protagonist Journey to Villain: It's starting to look this way for Kali.
  • Questionable Consent: It's heavily implied that Kali and Hao have started sleeping together, which was kind of inevitable if you think about it, since they share a bed. But with Hao's obvious manipulation of her (causing Kali to take a level in jerkass), it's hard to say just how consensual things are between them.
  • Quit Your Whining: Ren gives Kali a speech like this after she had an ugly temper tantrum in front of everyone.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Yoh and Kali.
  • Rebellious Spirit: Kali, at times.
  • Refusal of the Call: Kali has rejected Hao's offer to join his side multiple times, and she's also rejected a position in the X-Laws once.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Ren and Kali have one over the course of the story; they've stopped trying to actively hurt each other, but they still refuse to define themselves a couple.
    • Hao and Kali seem to be having one.
      • As of Chapter 21, they have started sleeping together.
  • The Resenter: For a while, Kali was this to Ren. She got over it though.
  • Running Gag: Ren and Kali giving each other a bottle of milk whenever they do something that pisses the other off.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Apparently Yoh knew for a while that Kali's involvement with Hao was more than she let on, as he saw her riding on The Spirit of Fire during the plane drop. He never told anyone else and never even confronted her about it; he knew she'd tell him eventually.
    • Kali turned out to be one for Ren. She knew about him killing Chrom even before he told her, even before she even met him.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Kali is all but Ren's official girlfriend. Kali keeps pushing him to go steady, but Ren insists on prioritizing the Shaman Tournament before all else.
  • Ship Tease: Kali and Ren had a lot, naturally. Chi and Amidamaru had a really small one in a flashback chapter; several chapters later, we find out they have a 'thing' going on. Chi also had some with Bason.
  • "Shut Up" Kiss: Ren is quite fond of giving Kali these. He even lampshaded it.
    Kali: You kissed me.
Ren: Yes. I find it a very effective way of shutting you up.
  • Sleight of Tongue: When Ren was being held captive by his father, Kali helped him escape by slipping the key in his mouth. Fearing an awkward moment after, Kali actually made sure that their lips wouldn't touch.
  • Smooch of Victory: Kali and Ren's first kiss was this.
  • Spider-Sense: Anytime someone with a close connection to a shaman dies or is gravely hurt, they can sense it. Even if they're miles away. Case in point: Kali is highly affected when Yoh dies and again when Ren dies...again.
  • Spoiled Brat: Ren is frequently referred to (usually by Kali) as one.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Hao towards Kali.
  • Start of Darkness: Kali killing someone was this for her.
    • Either that, or getting rid of Chi. Even Ren expressed disgust at her for doing so.
  • Stepford Smiler: Chi could be seen as one. She's usually portrayed as a much more cheerful character than her shaman, Kali, but her backstory suggests that she's playing this trope.
  • The Stoic: Ren.
  • Stronger Sibling: Kali struggles with the idea that Yoh is stronger than her, something that she's been dealing with ever since they were little. At one point, Mikihisa mentions that Yoh has come very close to surpassing her in strength, and even Hao plays on this insecurity of hers to try to entice her into joining his side.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Ren, to a mild extent.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: While discussing with Yoh the prospect of joining Hao, she talks about how she believes Hao can be helped and that he just needs someone like her, someone who understands. So, all things considered, this trope is the reason why she finally relented and joined Hao in the end. Well, that, and it's also implied that Kali may have feelings for him.
  • Taking the Heat: Ren wanted to do this for Kali after he found her with a dead body. She wouldn't let him. But the fact that he was willing to do this for her speaks volumes about how he feels about her.
Ren: I told you, I would do anything for you.
  • Technical Virgin: Hao was not a virgin in his past life (he even had a wife and child). In his current life, he is. Until he had sex with Kali, that is.
  • Teen Pregnancy: Anna
  • Territorial Smurfette: Kali is the only female main character who participates in the Shaman Tournament and is also the only female on Team "The Ren". Other female characters like Anna or Pirika usually stay in the sidelines.
  • These Hands Have Killed: Kali after she committed her first murder. Hao had been screwing with her mind and Kali was discovering abilities that she had no idea how to control; unfortunately, some poor shmuck decided to annoy her and she snapped, impaling him with a wooden log with a sharp tip.
  • Thicker Than Water: Somewhat averted. Kali is offended when Anna points out that she's not really blood, but Yoh later consoles her by telling her that blood doesn't necessarily mean family.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: Ren finds Kali doing this after she had committed her first murder.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: Kali reveals she was much happier as a child. It's actually shown in a flashback chapter, where we see Kali's memories. She was very happy and upbeat when she was little, and as she got older, she became noticeably more cynical. When she first met Chi, the spirit even commented on how cynical she was for someone alive and well.
    • Yoh did the opposite. See below.
  • Took a Level in Idealism: Yoh was apparently very cynical when he was younger, much similar to Hao and Ren. He hated humans and came close to creating onis several times. But as he got older, he became a Wide-Eyed Idealist. As opposed to his sister.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Kali, after she joins Hao and Hao starts to get in her head.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Ren and his milk, of course.
  • Troubled Backstory Flashback: Some of the scenes in Chapter 7.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Kali.
  • Villains Never Lie: According to Kali, Hao does a lot of terrible things, but he never lies.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Anna and Kali.
  • Weight Woe: Kali complained once or twice about gaining a few pounds from her and Ren's frequent late-night rendezvousing.
    • Anna also seems to suffer from this, though this is not really touched on.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Kali seemed to seek approval from her father, or at the very least affection, but when she finally got it, she didn't like it.
  • Wham Episode: Chapter 18. Kali left her friends to join Hao's side. The author tried something different for a change, but the short scenes deliver much emotion and leave a lot of ambiguity in the air.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Everyone, especially Ren, was enraged when Kali left to join Hao.
    • Ren later calls her out when she ditches Chi for new spirits.
    • Kali has a lot of these moments, mostly when it has something to do with Hao. Ren is usually the one to call her out, as he's usually the one who finds her out.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: Chapter 7 features scenes from Kali's past, up until the end where it's revealed that she's dying and is seeing her whole life flash before her eyes.
  • Will They or Won't They?: Ren and Kali.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Hao has no problem manhandling Kali. One has to wonder what he would do if he didn't like her.
    • During the preliminaries, Ren made it clear that he wasn't going to go easy on Kali just because she's a girl. Later on, when they start developing feelings for each other, it's clear that he would never do anything to really hurt her, but he, like Hao, has no problem manhandling her or fighting her.
  • You're Not My Father: During a heated argument, Kali blurted out to Yoh, "You're not even my real brother!" This visibly hurt him, and they were forced to admit to their friends for the first time that they're actually adoptive siblings.
