- Another Dimension: Star Haven is a separate dimension here, as opposed to just high in the sky.
- Bait-and-Switch: The beginning of Chapter 2 makes it look like Mario is ready to invade Bowser's Castle and rescue Peach, but it is soon revealed to be a kart race through it.
- "Blind Idiot" Translation: Chapter 10 is just Chapter 9, but Google translated to hell and back as an April Fools' Day joke.
- Butt-Monkey: Waluigi scores 0 points in the Mario Kart race and got titled "Loser of the Year" six years in a row.
- Dark Horse Victory: Thanks to a last-second Blue Shell, Luigi ends up winning the Mario Kart cup despite Mario and Bowser being neck-and-neck throughout most of it.
- The Dreaded: Queen Jaydes is this, terrifying her D-Men subordinates and making Vel'zar flee.
- God's Hands Are Tied: Gods' actions are heavily restricted by Divine Law. Queen Jaydes cannot leave the Underwhere, even to chase down escaped souls. The Star Spirits can't do anything without a wish, explaining why Bowser took the Star Rod so easily in Paper Mario
- Go-Karting with Bowser: The go-karting and sports events having villains is explained in this as no one else being strong enough to withstand the extremely dangerous conditions of the events.
- My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Despite most Goombas being weak and near-useless in combat, Goombarry is a great warrior who protects his town and wants to prove that not all Goombas are so pathetic.
- Sealed Evil in a Can: Vel'zar was locked away in the dungeons of the Underwhere, until he escapes in the first chapter.
