Ssssssmokin'!

Mario & Luigi: The Mask is a Web Video/Fanfic Crossover between Super Mario Bros. and The Mask. The fanfic can be read here, while the web series can be seen here.

The series first begins centuries in the past, when the Mushroom Kingdom and the Koopa Troop of that time join forces and chase down a creature that had ravaged both of their troops and homes. Upon tracking it down to a Warp Pipe, they bury it alive and use magic to seal it in, hoping that it will never be found and used again...

In the present day, having put up with constantly living in Mario's shadow and being seen as nothing but a joke and a cowardly sidekick for long enough, Luigi has grown sick and tired of it and wants nothing more than to be the big hero for once. He finally gets his chance when he finds the very object that the ancient Toads and Koopas sealed away long ago: the Mask of Loki.

Finding out the Mask's properties quickly, Luigi keeps it a secret from Mario and uses it to become a superhero he dubs Green Thunder; however, Green Thunder is incredibly impulsive and goofy, and often prolongs conflicts and leaves destruction in his wake.

To top it all off, a mysterious creature dubbed Ouroboros sides with Bowser and manipulates him into trying to find the Mask for himself...

Mario and Luigi: The Mask contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Absurdly Ineffective Barricade: Just like in the original movie, Green Thunder locks a door in Bowser's castle behind him, and then proceeds to block it with all kinds of random junk... only to find a whole slew of Bowser baddies right behind him.
  • Achilles' Heel: The mask cannot be worn at all during daylight.
  • All There in the Manual: Information about several original characters such as General Karnage and Daisy's mask form can be seen on the creator Time Lord Paradox's deviantart page.
  • Anti-Hero: Luigi's masked alter-ego, Green Thunder. He's really just trying to have fun, but he spends more time clowning and goofing around with the villains than actually taking them down.
  • Artifact of Doom: The Koopa Troop and Mushroom Kingdom of the prologue view the mask as such.
  • Attack Backfire: Green Thunder basically shrugs off most enemy weapons and traps that he endures.
  • Asshole Victim: Toadlop is a complete asshole for no reason, so it’s hard to feel bad for him when Green Thunder bullies him.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever:
    • Yoshi in episode 11 transforms into a Godzilla-like creature that eats anything in its path, after he gets the Mask stuck on his face.
    • Daisy also becomes this in episode 13.
  • A Twinkle in the Sky: Happens to Ondray the Goomba in episode 8 and Kylie Koopa in episode 10.
  • Butt-Monkey: Wario and Waluigi are tortured in nearly every one of their appearances by Green Thunder as a form of over-the-top Disproportionate Retribution, due to their torment towards Luigi in the first episode.
    • Toadlop, thanks to how much of a Jerkass he is to Luigi, is almost always a victim of Green Thunder.
  • Canon Foreigner: Ouroboros, as well as Dave and Robert, the two Koopa plumbers, and Bowser's henchmen Karnage and Captain Sugar.
  • Crossover: Between Super Mario Bros. and The Mask, with some of the more violent backstory of the original Mask comics.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Creator Time Lord Paradox stated that the Koopalings, after their appearance in episode 3, would not show up anymore in the series.
  • Deadpan Snarker: The cynical General Karnage cannot go without a minute of making a sarcastic comment.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Luigi's method of biting back is to become Green Thunder, and deliver revenge in near-sadistic ways.
    • For example, Wario and Waluigi are close to breaking point as they've been shocked, drowned and beaten up in many different ways. Toadlop, an insensitive and Jerkass Toad known for insulting Luigi, has been also getting this treatment by Green Thunder ever since the two first encountered.
  • Dressed All in Rubber: This is what some Koopas wore in their mission to kidnap Luigi. It didn't go so well.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In episode 2, Green Thunder's powers are first shown against a fight between a gang of Goombas and their Koopa leader.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: It's about Luigi encountering The Mask of Loki.
  • Expy:
    • Luigi/Green Thunder = Stanley Ipkiss/The Mask
    • Tor Vault = Walter
    • Kylie Koopa = Peggy Brandt
  • Fake Interactivity: In episode 3, Green Thunder is trying to look for Bowser's safe. The screen then pans upwards showing the safe. Green Thunder then appears facing the screen to say: "Why, aren't you a clever one?"
  • Giant Mook: Ondray the Goomba in episode 8.
  • Groin Attack: In episode 6, two Koopas who Green Thunder had earlier beat up and sent into space come flying back into Bowser's castle, smashing through a window. The first one nails Bowser where the sun don't shine, while the second hits him in the face and knocks him flat while he's screaming in pain.
    • It happens to Bowser again in episode 10, this time up to eleven. This time after Green Thunder blew up the tower with explosives and most of the Koopas were sent flying away, Karnage comes flying in inside his machine, but Bowser is too smart to be fooled twice and strikes him away. While he's boasting about nothing getting near "the crown jewels" a second time, he doesn't look in time to see an incoming group of koopa shells heading in his direction. The first shell (Captain Sugar's) bashes him on the head, followed by the remaining FOUR shells (the Koopa Bros) – striking him at full force in said "crown jewels". Cue the loud screaming.
  • Grumpy Old Man: In episode 5, Karnage comes across a Grumpy Old Koopa.
  • Home-Run Hitter: The koopas Beta and Theta are launched into the sky by Green Thunder's baseball bat, even him donning a baseball outfit.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Green Thunder is not very well liked by most people in the Mushroom Kingdom due to him being chaotic and wild along with the acts that he committed but he is a genuine hero who cares about the people there despite they can annoy him at times and he helps them with the real threats even protecting them as well.
    • After the events of episode 13, Daisy gets a bad rep for destroying Toad Town on her own, which isn't at all helped by her reckless nature and the fact that she was partially responsible for the destruction.
  • Hurricane of Puns: Green Thunder in episode 7, after he launches a cow at the Koopa Bros. on top of the tower.
Green Thunder: I've got a beef with you now! Come on, retaliate, if you've got bullocks! Come on, I dairy you! I'll cream you! Okay, enough of milking this, back to my job!
  • It's Quiet… Too Quiet: Mario and the Koopa plumbers Dave and Robert are trapped underground with a fire dragon:
    Rob: It's quiet...
Dave: If you say "too quiet" I'm throwing you overboard!
  • Jerkass: Toadlop, a selfish and insensitive Toad.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Green Thunder is a genuine troublemaker, a jerk and a trickster but he does show himself to be a hero as he protects the people in Mushroom Kingdom even though they don't like him very much. He also cares about his friends as well and loves Princess Daisy which shows he is capable of friendship, compassion, kindness and love despite his quirks.
  • Mask of Power: The Mask of Loki.
  • Overly Long Gag: In episode 4, a five second fight between Ouroboros and Kamek ends with Kamek getting smoked, plus his teeth falling out for about 15 seconds.
    • Also in episode 4, a scuffle with the Koopa Squad trying to kidnap Peach whilst the lights were turned off. Next episode, they found out they took Daisy instead.
  • Painful Transformation: Happens the first time Luigi puts on the mask, but only the first time. Taking the mask off is far less painful.
  • Playing with Fire:
    • A Fire Dragon controlled by Ouroboros is first encountered by Mario and the Koopa plumbers in an underground cavern.
    • One of Green Thunder's opponents Ember in episode 9 is a pyrokinetic.
  • The Quiet One: Mario, who only makes a few sounds.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Toadlop gives this to Luigi in the first episode:
"He's a cluts, a coward, gullible and useless! Why does Mario put up with you when all you do is run away? If Mario wasn't even with you, you wouldn't even try to help!"
  • Shapeshifter Default Form: Green Thunder normally remains in the form of a green-skinned, clean-shaven Luigi in a blue zoot suit and matching feathered hat.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Episode 8 features Green Thunder trying to break into a tower Mario's Castle Calamity style. Turns out it was his future self repelling him before telling him to go back in time and enter the castle two hours earlier using a blue outhouse called the Turdis.
    • When Green Thunder arrives at the Wario's with blistering speed: "I'd like to see a mexican mouse or a blue hedgehog with ideas above its station try that!"
    • Go, go, gadget legs!
    • Bowser's troops couldn't resist the urge to dance with a "Smooth Criminal".
    • The Triforce is seen among many things when Green Thunder barricaded a door in Bowser's castle.
    • Sonic made a cameo when Green Thunder was pulling something out of his hat during episode 5.
    • When Bowser and his troops are building the Koopatania, which is based of the Toadtanic (which in itself is the Mushroom Kingdom version to the Titanic), one of the Koopas is messing about shouting "I AM THE KING OF THE WORLD!"
    • One to the Pokémon games - when Green Thunder challenges Tor Vault to a battle.
    • Green Thunder uses a parody of the codec from Metal Gear to talk with Colonel Campbell.
  • Take That!: In Episode 14, when Kylie asks her boss what social media site would blame Daisy for destroying the town when she was defending it from the Axem Rangers, her boss replies, "Tw@er".
  • Too Dumb to Live: The Koopa Squad, barring Omega are definitely not the smartest troops around, but Theta (the green-colored one) takes the cake.
  • Tornado Move: Green Thunder's trademark move, which he uses for attack or just to morph into something else.
  • The Vamp: Nadia in episode 9, who's also a water elemental.
  • Wedgie: In episode 3, both Karnage and Bowser get one from Green Thunder.
    • Bowser Jr also gets one at the start of episode 4. And Toadlop at the end of the same episode.
    • Even Tor Vault in episode 10 gets one!
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Bowser Jr. had a little scene with Green Thunder, then is never seen again afterwards.
