MRRN is a RWBY fanfiction written by WinterWolf29. It is divided into volumes, not unlike the source material.

The story follows the journeys of Mathdon Kendrick, Robin Kendrick, Ruo-Jian Bai Hu, and Nasser Achdarr. Together, they form Team MRRN.

MRRN contains examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: Mathdon's father abused him because of his Asperger Syndrome.

  • Adaptational Personality Change: Ozpin. During the events of Volume 3, after Pyrrha refuses to go into the Aura chamber, Ozpin knocks her unconscious and forces her into it, damaging his trust in the other students after they learn the truth. He's also more of a Control Freak, often insisting that things need to go his way to prevent panic from breaking out. His lies and half-truths are also more focused on, such as Valkoin claiming to have used a question from the Relic of Knowledge, withholding information that got Forest's teammate, Trenton, killed, and not telling Summer Rose about his plan to use the Silver Eyes against Salem. When the extend of his lies and hypocrisy are revealed, everyone no longer trusts him.

  • Color-Coded Characters: In accordance of the Color Naming Rule, each member of MRRN is associated with a different color.
    • Mathdon Kendrick: Brown
    • Robin Kendrick: Red
    • Ruo-Jian Bai Hu: White
    • Nasser Achdarr: Green

  • Dark and Troubled Past: All of the protagonists had major crap happen in their lives.
    • Mathdon was abused by his father.
    • Ruo's father was killed, which lead to him being abused by his mother, who forced him to fight for the White Fang.
    • Nasser's family was betrayed by his brother.
    • Robin was treated poorly and harassed by his brother after losing his team on a mission.

  • Darker and Edgier: The MRRN series definitely has a darker tone compared to canon.
    • Nachtfel. His armor is covered in smeared blood from Huntsmen and Huntresses he’s killed. He overlooks brutal executions of his enemies, such as burning an SDC associate alive and hanging defeated Huntsmen with barbed wire.
    • The Fall of Beacon. In canon, the three main fatalities were Penny Polendina, Roman Torchwick and Pyrrha Nikos. In the MRRN series, Team CRDL, Velvet Scarlatina, Arslan Altan and Safirlas’s teammates are all killed.
    • The lengths the Iron Knights are willing to go to destroy the Huntsmen.

  • Fire-Forged Friends: Team MRRN survives a deadly mission, fought in the Fall of Beacon, rescued Professor Goodwitch, battled the Iron Knights many times and helped defend Haven Academy. This is pointed at when Nasser admits to his mother that he views Mathdon, Robin, and Ruo-Jian as brothers rather than teammates.

  • Fun with Acronyms: MRRN is pronounced as ‘Maroon’.

  • Hate Sink: Several examples:
    • Gaspar Dorado was initially arrogant, egotistical, unpleasant, selfish and irresponsible. Later averted when he’s suspended and comes back, having turned things around. He becomes a much more pleasant person and acknowledges his past misbehavior.
    • Donovan Katur is the abusive father to Mathdon and Safirlas Kendrick. He was verbally and emotionally abusive towards his family, blamed them for his choices, had no qualms about losing his temper or lying to them, and constantly put himself as the victim. His unwillingness to take responsibility for his actions and constantly disregarding his children as worthless definitely makes him unpopular.
    • Cassim Achdarr stole his family’s inheritance and left them in near poverty so he could enjoy a luxurious life. Whenever he contacted them, he only wanted something and accused them of being selfish, all the while ignoring his own selfishness. He keeps insisting that he did nothing wrong and the money belonged to him and no one else. Averted when Cassim returns home after having lost the money and seeks to make things right. It’s proven false when Nasser discovers that Cassim forged a document to have his family evicted from their home in the hopes of getting money. Again, Cassim shows no qualms about his selfish choices. When Nasser tries to destroy the document, Cassim threatens to turn Ruo over to the police for murder. An explosion occurs, resulting in Cassim’s death.
    • Jason Currant bullied Math for his weight and Asperger’s at Aurum and wrongfully got him expelled. When he first appears, he is arrogant and continuously insults Mathdon.

  • Hypocrite:
    • Nachtfel is possibly the biggest hypocrite in the series. He hates the Huntsmen for being apathetic and corrupt to the lives they’re sworn to protect, yet refuses to acknowledge the damage he and his Knights cause as well, along with the innocent lives they destroy. Nachtfel’s anger and hatred ultimately blinds him to reality, so many of his preachings and accusations are him deflecting the blame onto his enemies.
    • Ozpin constantly expresses faith and resolve in humanity, yet won’t share important information with them, even his closest allies. Despite being afraid of his own trust being betrayed, he ultimately did the same to everyone else.
    • Glaucus calls out Ozpin’s group during Volume 3. They insist that sacrifices have to be made, yet is pushing it off to a young woman. Ironwood wants everyone to trust him, yet he won’t trust others and has no problem betraying Ozpin by reporting him to the Council.
    • Raven definitely counts. She blames Yang for not finding her sooner, yet gave her no clues on how to find her. She refuses to acknowledge her hypocrisy when Vernal reminds her that she preached about loyalty to family, yet abandoned her own daughter. She seems very offended when Yang states that she’s Summer Rose’s daughter, ignoring that she had never been part of Yang’s life. She blames Yang and Qrow for getting involved in Ozpin and Salem’s conflict, ignoring that she wouldn’t have attracted Salem’s attention if she hadn’t willingly harbored a Maiden, who she KNEW Salem was after. She preaches about strength and survival of the fittest, but often lets others fight her own battles so she can save herself and uses her philosophy to excuse her atrocities. In the end, Raven is possibly one of the biggest hypocrites in the series, rivaling Nachtfel.

  • Invincible Villain: Jinn claims that Salem cannot be killed. Even though Ozpin has a plan to use the Silver Eyes, it’s rather flimsy at best. As of right now, it’s assumed that Salem cannot be killed.

  • Never My Fault: Several examples:
    • Raven refuses to acknowledge how her decisions affect her situation or relationships with her family, instead blaming everyone else. She uses her philosophy of Darwinism to justify her atrocities, never taking responsibility.
    • Nachtfel adamantly blames the Huntsmen and their allies for victimizing innocent people. When he’s called out by Team MRRN, he deflects the blame onto his victims for standing with the Huntsmen.
    • Donovan Katur is one of the worst examples of this trope. He refuses to take responsibility for his choices, always blaming everyone else for what he does. No matter how many people call him out, he won’t accept responsibility for how he mistreated his family.

  • Spared by the Adaptation: Pyrrha survives the Fall of Beacon and manages to wound Cinder. However, she is still shot through the torso and heel, but survives thanks to Forest Kotka saving her.
