"No ghosts. No conspiracies. Just a secret we were all supposed to find, but never did. Something that changes an entire generation's childhood and the very essence of a multi-million (billion?) dollar franchise."

I HATE YOU is a Super Mario Bros. creepypasta based off of Super Mario World. It claims that the writer, Slime Beast, has found a lore-changing secret level in the game. It can be read here.

The writer loves playing Super Mario World on emulator and has been playing it for a decade. One day, while playing the Sunken Ship level, they spot something they've never seen before—a "Blind Boo," or Boo enemy without eyes. The Blind Boo is blocking the exit Warp Pipe, but there is another way out: a Key and Keyhole, which open secret exits in the game; the narrator is sure that this is brand new, as they've never seen nor heard of anyone discovering an alternate route in the Sunken Ship. Excited to be the first to discover the secret, the narrator grabs the key and passes through...

Mario then returns to the World Map, where a new level—signified by a whirlpool—appears. In a bit of foreshadowing, moving Mario to the whirlpool results in his expression becoming horrified, with a nearby giant Bowser rock formation crying tears of blood. A bit spooked but undeterred, the narrator enters the level, which is titled "OH GOD NO." Things quickly take a turn for the strange, as the level proves to be a kind of underwater castle that consists of a single long hallway that goes on for quite some time. As the narrator goes through the hallway, strange enemies appear, including more Blind Boos, Banzai Bills with screaming faces and blood gushing from their eyes, and Big Boos with horrific expressions of anger. Bloody messages also manifest on the walls, including "I HATE YOU" and "WHY WON'T YOU DIE?" The player is also forced to activate cheats to get through the level, as there is no way to escape the Bleeding Bills and Monster Boos.

After finally reaching the end of the hallway, the narrator finds himself in a new area filled with Thwomps. In another scary twist, the floor under the Thwomps is covered with blood, suggesting that they've successfully smashed their victims into pulp. Next up comes a room full of spikes—which have other Marios impaled on them, suggesting that countless incarnations of the plumber have tried (and failed) to get through this level. The player escapes them all and enters a boss door...

Once they reach the final chamber, the main character comes across Luigi himself. Entering a cutscene, they learn that Luigi has been an inside agent for King Koopa the entire time. He hates playing second fiddle to Mario, so he operates in the background and helps Koopa kidnap Princess Toadstool. Luigi is sick of his brother and wants him gone once and for all, so he stomps on Mario several times. This doesn't kill Mario. Mario takes his brother by surprise and pushes him into the lava.

The player plays through the rest of the game to see if anything changed. Nothing has changed, though they can't enter the level anymore. The only apparent change is the ending art: Mario frowns at Luigi, Princess Toadstool is crying, and Luigi's face has been melted off.

A ROM hack version of the creepypasta was released by SMW Central user Ersanio in July 2016, and can be found here. A reimagining of the creepypasta and the game titled Mario World: Ignited Hatred was released in early Feburary 2024 and can be downloaded here.

I HATE YOU provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Villainy: Luigi is an inside-agent that works with the Koopa Troop.
  • Artistic License: The narrator says they used the B button to run... however, they were playing the SNES version, in which B is jump and X and Y are run.
  • Art-Style Dissonance: It's a horror story featuring the cute Super Mario World graphics.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: The secret level contains the corpses of dozens of other Marios who have tried, and failed, to complete the level.
  • Cain and Abel: Luigi is secretly jealous of his more successful brother and wants him dead.
  • Canon Discontinuity: In-universe, this presumably happened, assuming the level isn't actually Dummied Out (hence why it's so difficult to get to). Mario knows Luigi's secret now, but all other Mario games ignore this.
  • Cheat Code: The first hallway in the secret level has an unavoidable Bleeding Bill; due to this, the narrator is forced to use a Game Genie code that activates permanent invincibility. Averted in the ROM hack, which just has the invincibility activate at a certain point in the hallway.
  • Dark Fic: The creepypasta describes itself as a lost, secret level to Super Mario World that no one has ever found evidence of. It's full of blood and gore, a dark twist, and attempted fratricide. It also parodies video game creepypastas with similar premises, in how it deliberately presents the dark content in a straightforward manner.
  • Death from Above: The Thwomps, in a literal example of this trope, have successfully ground previous Marios to bits, as the floor below them is now covered in blood.
  • Death Glare: The ending screen features Mario giving one hell of a disapproving glare at the now-horrendously burned Luigi.
  • Disney Death: For a moment, Mario seems dead. He gets back onto his feet and delivers a finishing blow to Luigi. If the ending screen is anything to go by, Luigi undergoes this as well, since he's shown horribly burned, but his single glowing eye suggests that the lava didn't do him in...
  • Easter Egg: In the ROM hack, there is a weird sound track that accompanies the ending art. When reversed, it’s revealed to be a distorted version of “I Love Beijing Tiananmen” from Hong Kong '97.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Luigi is jealous of Mario with such an intensity that he'd side with Bowser, aiding his plans to kidnap the Princess. When Mario finally reaches him, Luigi opts to take him on in a fight to the death.
  • The Internet Is for Porn: The protagonist admits to having used his own computer to download "all sorts of pornography."
  • Jump Scare: In the EXE version, towards the end (and when you touch the smiley mushroom right next to the pipe (which is replaced by a red door in the SFC version)) a bunch of creepy images shows up. Those images however are about other media, some examples being Sonic.exe and Suicide Mouse.
  • The Mole: Out of his jealousy against Mario, Luigi has been working with Bowser for a long time, aiding him in his schemes.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Mario breaks down crying after he pushes Luigi into the lava in self-defense, accidentally killing him.
  • Red Herring: During the final battle, a Hell Valley Sky Tree from Super Mario Galaxy 2 can be seen watching the fight through a window. Other than it simply being there, it seemingly has no connection to the wider plot.
  • Riddle for the Ages: What was the deal with the mushroom with a weird face? The writer didn't dare to touch it, so we never find out. However, trying to touch said mushroom in the EXE version triggers a string of screamers, while in the ROM hack it simply makes you lose a life.
  • Shout-Out: In the boss chamber, a strange, ominous figure looms in one of the windows, overlooking the action. It's one of the mysterious "aliens" from the Shiverburn Galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy 2, which have also appeared in some other Mario games as Easter Eggs and prompted a ton of invokedfan theories.
  • Sibling Murder: Luigi attempts to kill Mario, but he fails to. Mario ends up doing so instead, though not because he wants to.
  • Springtime for Hitler: This fic's nature as a parody of creepypastas went unnoticed by most of the readerbase, and it instead became treated as a genuine creepypasta thanks to the sheer effort Slime Beast put into it.
  • Stealth Parody: While the story was written as a parody of creepypasta, the amount of effort put into it meant lots of people didn't get the joke.
  • Troll Fic: In an inversion of invokedParody Retcon, the author claimed that they wrote it as a satire of video game creepypastas shortly after the story was initially released and praised. However, some ignored the author's claims and regarded it as a genuine creepypasta, with praise given to Slime Beast's sprites.

OH GOD NO!
