Go To

How Eating a Strange Fruit Gave Me My Quirk by azndrgn is a My Hero Academia fanfic. It's a pseudo-Crossover between My Hero Academia and the One Piece, where Izuku eats the Gomu Gomu no Mi, gaining a "Quirk" early and things snowball from there.

Official Summary: Izuku was quirkless... until he ate a strange fruit that gave him a quirk! Now with a quirk, he will strive to become the greatest Hero! Strong Izuku, Izuku x harem due to poll. Slight One Piece x-over for just the devil fruit.

Tropes:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: During their match, Hitoshi fails to brainwash Denki, and realizes it's because Denki's brain is short-circuiting, leaving him in his "whey" state. While he thinks Denki did this on purpose, it was more just Denki overexerting himself as usual rather than anything planned.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Mitsuki finds her son having to be chained during the Medal Ceremony hilarious.
  • Adaptational Curves: Inko still has her figure from Izuku's early childhood in this continuity due to Izuku overcoming his quirklessness much earlier, removing a key part of her stress that caused her to overeat. Any pudge she would gain from natural aging is reduced due to All Might gifting her his version of the Total Gym.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Izuku's and Bakugou's relationship is better than it was in canon since they had their fight a lot earlier and Izuku's martial arts master encouraged Bakugou to have a healthier mindset regarding Izuku.
    • In this story, Kamui admits to Izuku that Tensei was one of his idols, having stopped him from falling into a bad crowd and becoming a villain. After that, he became one of Tensei's sidekicks before striking out on his own, the two remaining friends afterwards. It's due to this that Kamui takes Izuku to Hosu, having figured out that Stain would be there and wanting to arrest him after Stain crippled Tensei.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Izuku having a rubber body means he can easily handle One For All at 100% without breaking his bones.
    • Mellissa Shield gets in on this as well, having eaten the Hana Hana no Mi by accident after the I-Island attack.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: When Kota says he hates heroes, Izuku asks him if that means he also hates his aunt and her friends, which stuns him.
  • Ascended Extra: Downplayed. In canon, Kamui Woods would eventually become a major supporting character, but only post-Kamino Ward and forming the Lurkers with Edgeshot and Mt. Lady, the three of them, in turn, being let in on the secret of One For All while aiding Izuku in hunting down All For One. Here, he gets more focus as one of Izuku's mentors, initially striking a minor friendship with him following Izuku saving Bakugo, and being the one to take Izuku on as an intern instead of Gran Torino. He's also given a closer connection to the Iida family via Tensei, and in turn, plays a role in the Hosu arc.
  • Ass Shove: During the USJ attack, to get one of the villains to talk, Sen and Pony threaten to shove the power of their Quirks up the villain's ass.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Shinsou refuses to let Monoma borrow his Quirk to use against Izuku because Izuku helped him find new ways of using his Quirk.
  • Blatant Lies: When a reporter asks Izuku what's it like to have All Might as a teacher, he claims to be a Business student to get them off his back. When it works, Momo, Itsuka, and Ochako make similar lies. The reporter realises she's been had only after the kids make it through U.A.'s gate.
  • Broken Pedestal: Beros faith in Humarise and Flect Turn is fully shattered upon learning that instead of being born into the group, they actually kidnapped her from her birth parents and fed her lies and emotionally and psychologically abused her to turn her into Flect Turn's perfect bodyguard.
  • Cape Snag: A rocket once snagged on All Might's cape and would have choked him if he hadn't managed to tear off his cape.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Izuku manages to get the attention of four girls (Itsuka Kendo, Momo Yaoyorozu, Ochako Uraraka, and Tsuyu Asui) without knowing it. Melissa Shield later develops a crush on him, while the female members of the Wild, Wild Pussycats (Ragdoll, Pixie-Bob, and Mandalay) all express an interest in him. Mt. Lady meanwhile admits to finding him attractive, and Midnight gets caught up in a fantasy about being in a BDSM session with him.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: All Might thinks that the Wolfram incident at I-Island would never have happened had he been honest with David about One for All.
  • Cover Identity Anomaly: Katsuki spots a Character Tic that Himiko does all the time, even when disguised. If she gets excited, she lightly bites her lips and gains a look in her eyes. This lets him spot her in the Provisional Licensing Exams.
  • Crossover: The Devil Fruits of One Piece are brought over into the world of My Hero Academia, with the devils in the fruits referencing their previous hosts on occasion.
  • Dangerous Phlebotinum Interaction: Narrowly subverted, but Izuku inheriting One For All nearly killed him due to the souls of the previous wielders facing off against the Devil of the Gum-Gum Fruit. Turns out that the devil fruits are really jealous of their wielders and don't like it at all when new powers outside of what they can obtain on their own, like Haki, get introduced.
  • Dating Catwoman: Katsuki finds himself falling for Himiko even though they're on opposite sides.
  • December–December Romance: During Internship week, the elderly Gran Torino meets the equally elderly Rekai and develops a crush on her. She reciprocates, giving him her number and asking him to call her when everything is settled.
  • Delayed Reaction: When Tsuyu confesses to Izuku that she, Itsuka, Momo, and Ochako all have a crush on him and want to date him, Izuku goes "I see" before letting out a Big "WHAT?!" as it sinks in.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Curious still dies to Himiko during the clash between the League of Villains and the Meta Liberation Army, but Himiko kills her using Katsuki's quirk, not Ochako's.
  • Disability Immunity: When Denki's in his "whey" mode, Shinsou's Brainwash Quirk can't affect him since the parts of Denki's brain necessary for Shinsou's Quirk to take hold have short-circuited.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: The night of the confrontation with Hisashi, Toshinori finds Inko downing glass after glass of wine as she looks at photos of her and Izuku, lamenting how Izuku was the only good thing to come from being married to the bastard, and how despite everything, she had hoped he'd one day come back, only for that hope to be crushed underfoot by the man himself, finally freeing her. Toshinori manages to calm her down while saying there's nothing wrong with her before taking her back to bed.
  • Enemy Mine: Nezu hates the current President of the HPSC and she hates him in turn. However, they're both able and willing to put aside their animosity in the face of big enough threats to Japan.
  • Evil Is Petty: Zig zagged, since he's not evil, just a massive asshole. After the Sports Festival, Endeavor barges in and forces an interview just so he can delegitimize Izuku's overall win and Bakugo's beating Shoto. He not only claims Izuku only won by luck, he has the gall to say everyone in Izuku's half of the block was weaker than those in Shoto's block and had to rely on "tricks" to fight, and that Bakugo only beat Shoto via technicality. When the interviewer rightfully points out Izuku's takedown of the Zero Pointer and the speed he demonstrated in the cavalry battle, Endeavor derides Izuku as being a one-trick Lightning Bruiser that Shoto could have easily beaten. And as the Number 2 Hero, his word carries weight, so when he says this and adds on his decision to not send an offer to Izuku, not only does Izuku's 7,324 internship offers to drop to 10, but everyone in the East block has their offers drop, the only exception being Itsuka since Endeavor makes it sound like Izuku cheated her out of a win.
  • Facepalm: Ojiro and Fumikage both facepalm at the realisation that they should have been the ones to tell Sero about Shinsou's Quirk instead of Aoyama. While Aoyoma did tell Sero about Shinsou's Quirk, his descriptions of it being uncouth and unflashy were completely useless.
  • Failed a Spot Check: During the USJ incident, Kurogiri fails to notice the lack of blood when Setsuna gets sliced until she reveals she's not actually dead at a crucial moment.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Izuku is furious with Flect Turn's sob story. He says it's sad, but that in no way justifies committing genocide, especially as Flect Turn didn't even try to find a better way.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: Izuku finds himself with a Raging Stiffie when he sees Momo and Itsuka sharing a heated kiss.
  • Glad He's On Our Side: After seeing Melissa snap a Villain's spine in half, Kamakiri remarks that he's glad she's not a Villain.
  • Got Me Doing It: Melissa begins calling her inventions babies like Mei does due to spending too long around her.
  • Green-Eyed Epiphany: Invoked. To see if he truly likes Itsuka, Momo, Ochako, and Tsuyu in that way, Izuku tries picturing them with another man. When he feels pain just from imagining it, he realises that the answer is yes.
  • Green-Eyed Monster:
    • Downplayed since it never amounts to more than angry muttering, but Mt. Lady isn't the biggest fan of Izuku's thanks to him upstaging her on her debut day. She's willing to defend him when others call him plain though and doesn't hesitate to help rescue him, even if she doesn't know why, her behavior making her come across as a tsundere.
    • Shoto fights Bakugo a lot more fiercely after seeing Mitsuki and Masaru cheering Bakugo on, admitting to himself that he's jealous of Bakugo having a family that loves him.
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: Vlad King with a villain during the USJ incident.
  • Harem Genre: It is in the fics summary. Izuku eventually gets together with Itsuka, Momo, Ochako, Tsuyu, and Melissa, while Mt. Lady, Midnight, Ragdoll, Pixie-Bob, and Mandalay are implied to join in the future.
  • Hate Sink: Hisashi Midoriya. While not physically abusive like Endeavor, Hisashi is a nasty piece of work who only cares about being Izuku's father once Izuku wins the Sports Festival. He tries to convince Izuku to come to live with him in England while claiming he loves him when it's apparent to everyone he's nothing more than a Glory Seeker. It gets to the point where he starts shouting that he owns Izuku, and accuses Inko of lying about him being Quirkless and cheating on him, prompting the normally meek Masaru to palm strike him in the face and send him flying with an explosion. To solidify how much of an asshole he is, he was all set to burn the Bakugo house and everyone in it, including a bunch of teenagers and his own son, to a crisp out of anger, only being stopped by Toshinori putting the fear of god into him. Even that wasn't enough initially, as he had planned on using his influence to ruin Izuku and Inko's lives for defying him, while maybe making Inko his mistress as punishment, only giving up upon realizing the man who terrified him was freaking All Might.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Endeavour and All Might still have their talk on what being the Symbol of Peace means. The former simply requests a meeting instead of taking advantage of Shouto and Katsuki needing to retake the Provisional Licencing Exam to talk to the latter then.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Inko, Mitsuki and Masaru learn Toshinori is All Might in Chapter 26.
    • All Might, Rekai, and Gran Torino learn about Izuku dating several girls at once in Chapter 29.
    • Izuku figures out that his bodyguard for the US trip is Lady Nagant in Chapter 43.
  • Intimate Telecommunications: Yui sends Iida a gif of her dressed in a tied-up ribbon which she takes off in an arousing way.
  • Jerkass Realization: Endeavour thinks he may have judged Izuku too quickly and have been unfairly biased against him when he did the interview when he saw Izuku's resolve against the Hero Killer and later his combat ability against himself during the Practical End-Of-Term Exams.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Because he's only a reserve student, most of the Hero course students haven't gotten to know Hitoshi or even realize what his Quirk is. So when Mashirao, Yuga, and Fumikage lament failing to warn Hanta about his Quirk, Tenya is initially surprised the rest of the class doesn't know, before quickly realizing only he, Izuku, Ochako, and Momo actually know due to bothering to ask him. Monoma, Sen, and Kosei likewise knew, but only because Monoma figured it out on his own and asked Hitoshi to be in their team for the cavalry battle.
  • Marshmallow Hell: When Izuku reunites with Itsuka at UA's Entrance Exams, the latter pulls the former into a hug where he gets shoved between her breasts.
  • Mysterious Middle Initial: Izuku picks Deku as his Hero name partly to specifically pay homage to the Will of D.
  • My Biological Clock Is Ticking: This, along with her parents' constant nagging for her to provide grandchildren, is the reason why Pixie-Bob is so desperate to have a boyfriend. Mandalay mentions that she and Ragdoll are in the same boat.
  • Not Hyperbole: When Rappa says he was killed by Overhaul five times, everyone thought he meant that metaphorically until it became clear he meant it literally.
  • Parent with New Paramour: After Hisashi solidifies himself as an asshole, Inko is able to move on and begins a relationship with All Might, which Izuku approves of.
  • Pet the Dog: In a rare moment of kindness, Endeavor decides to cover for Tenya saving Yui from Stain without permission to use his Quirk by claiming he gave Tenya permission, willing to take any blame that might come.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Due to Izuku eating the Gomu Gomu no Mi as a kid and developing a "Quirk", he becomes more confident later on.
    • Thanks to taking martial arts lessons, Izuku meets Itsuka years before going to U.A.
  • Polyamory:
    • Due to the advent of Quirks, polygamy has been allowed in Japan and most of the world due to a combination of spreading 'stronger' quirks through the generations (which is frowned upon similarly to 'Quirk Marriages') and some quirks needing multiple partners (the most famous case being a woman in the Middle East developing a quirk that required several men to keep her sane).
    • After a lot of discussion, the girls who are into Izuku decide to share him. Momo and Itsuka also find themselves attracted to each other and not just Izuku. Ochako and Tsuyu are also into each other after they discuss how they feel about each other.
    • Nejire reveals that she, Mirio, and Yuyu are dating each other during the U.A. Cultural Festival.
  • Power Misidentification: Those who don't know the truth about Izuku's rubber powers assume it is an ordinary Quirk, but it's not a Quirk at all.
  • No-Sell:
    • Izuku's rubber body lets him tank physical attacks, like Kota's punches, with no issue.
    • Armament Haki can resist Devil Fruit powers in the original One Piece manga, and can resist Quirk abilities here. This prevents Overhaul from disassembling Izuku on contact.
  • Shout-Out: One of the employees at Tokyo Disneyland is a hero whose Quirk lets them summon a giant key.
  • Super Drowning Skills: Just like in One Piece, Izuku and Melissa Shield can no longer swim due to eating their devil fruits. Though the the former regains the ability to move in water again after gaining One for All.
  • Super-Senses: Rekai's Quirk Sonar gives her powerful hearing.
  • Took a Level in Badass: As a result of the Nabu Island Incident, Monoma's Quirk grew greatly in power and versatility.
  • Troll: Bakugou has a lot of fun teasing Himiko with the possibility of letting her give him a blowjob only for him to give her a normal hot dog instead.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Nedzu is derisive of the poor handling of the Sludge Villain incident by the present heroes. He can think of many different ways they could have worked together to resolve the situation, and some could have even handled it on their own. In his opinion, they should have been more competent than that.
    • U.A.'s faculty call Monoma out for sabotaging Izuku and abandoning him during their go at the End-Of-Term Practical Exam. The sabotage can be forgiven as it was an accident born from the panic of Monoma's Quirk having a bad reaction to Izuku's Quirk that's actually not a Quirk, but abandoning Izuku, especially with a smirk, was explicitly unheroic of him.
  • Wingding Eyes: When Ochako learns that the cuffs Izuku is wearing are highly valuable, her eyes turn into Yen symbols at the prospect of selling them.
  • Wrong Context Magic: Izuku's rubber powers are not a Quirk. In most situations, the distinction doesn't matter, but there are rare times when it does. During the End-Of-Term Exams, Monoma is unable to copy it while Aizawa is unable to erase it. The distinction also comes into play during the Kamino Arc, where due to the rubber powers not being a Quirk, Quirk Suppressant Cuffs don't work, and with careful layering of his Devil Fruit power with the Devil's help, it can shield Izuku's actual Quirk from the effects. This allows Izuku to catch All for One by surprise.
