Fanfic / Growth through Chaos

Go To

Growth through Chaos is a fanfic made by Animephilosopher1 , and is a Crossover between Naruto and One Piece.

After finding a genie's lamp, Naruto, riding on the high of the team's first C-Rank mission, impulsively asks to take the team to a place where they'll be really strong. Complying, the genie sends them to the world of One Piece. Now stuck on a new world, the group finds themselves on a floating restaurant, with a certain boy wearing a straw hat drawing near.

Growth Through Chaos provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass: The genin develop this, gaining new skills due to them becoming mentees of members of the Straw Hats.
    • Sasuke, electing to train under Zoro, becomes a better swordsman with Zoro encouraging him to branch out.
    • Naruto, choosing Sanji as his mentor, starts becoming a more physical combatant as he trains in Black Leg style.
    • Sakura, choosing to train under Gin, starts learning how to use tonfas, and Kakashi also starts training her in more jutsu, such as the Transparency Jutsu.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Because he learns of Luffy's exploits much earlier, Garp is the one the crew encounters in Loguetown, much earlier than the two were introduced in canon.
  • Adaptational Origin Connection: Smoker met Bellemere years ago here and refers to her as an inspiration for all marines on the East Blue, whereas canon never indicated the two ever met.
  • Big Brother Instinct: This trope is simultaneously gender-inverted and age-inverted between Nami and Naruto after she learns his Dark and Troubled Past of being an outcast thanks to being a Jinchūriki, with Nami becoming Naruto's Cool Big Sis. On the one hand, do not harm or insult Naruto around Nami, or she will be furious, as when he is denied ramen for being a pirate, she actually goes swinging, surprising since she's normally the Only Sane Man of the Straw Hats (Money Fetish aside). Even before then, she attacks both Zoro and Sanji when a fight between them ends up with Naruto getting knocked unconscious and attacks Luffy because he stole Naruto's ramen from him. On the other hand, do not insult or hurt Nami in front of Naruto, or he will get mad, as when Buggy calls Nami a "treasure-stealing she-bitch", he doesn't take it well, and when Alvida nearly hits her, Naruto gives her "the same face a certain Mizuki witnessed" and uses Shuriken Shadow Clone Jutsu.
    • Additionally, Sanji develops a similar bond to Naruto, but mixes this with Big Brother Mentor. This starts back on the Baratie, where Naruto was inspired by Sanji's ideals of chivalry (for context, this is the Naruto at the start, who holds a torch for Sakura) and begins to look up to him. He even turns to him for training in both the culinary and martial arts, and his Big Brother Worship increases when Sanji convinces a starving Gin to eat. When Naruto undergoes a mental breakdown from his past of ostracization and the mostly positive treatment he has received throughout his time in the new world, Sanji immediately picks up on Naruto's horrid past from his own abusive experiences at the hands of his father and brothers, and demands answers from Kakashi as to what happened to him, grabbing the Jonin by the neck and raising fists against him.
  • The Bus Came Back: Alongside Buggy and Alvida, Kuro also makes an appearance in Loguetown, seeking revenge on Usopp and Luffy.
  • Call-Forward: While the series so far is set in the pre-Time Skip period, there are allusions to events past it.
    • One of the books Sakura starts to read relates the Vinsmoke family and their rule over the North Blue, and Sanji has flashbacks of his abusive childhood and Reiju helping him break free when Naruto suffers an emotional breakdown.
    • Nami, during her breakdown after losing all the money to buy the freedom of Cocoyashi Village, remembers how Carina betrayed her as well.
  • Cool Big Sis: Adoptive variant, but one nonetheless. Nami chooses to essentially adopt Naruto as a little brother, and the two happily engage in several sibling activities, like piggyback rides, tucking him into bed, and even going on a brother-sister shopping trip alone. It's shown to be a very positive thing for Naruto, who finally gets the familial love he'd been almost completely starved of back in Konoha.
  • Deconstruction Fic: How traumatizing Naruto's lonely upbringing actually was and how terrible his life is are addressed more thoroughly than in canon. Naruto can connect with people, earn respect, and overall fit in far better in the One Piece world than in his own home village, all without a fraction of the effort. In Logue Town, when a mother compliments Naruto for saving her son from a bully, the nice treatment is so far removed from Naruto's early life that he is forced to confront how awful his childhood was and has a mental breakdown in the middle of a park.
  • Due to the Dead: Smoker and Tashigi give a long overdue funeral to Bellemere, paying their respects to her and apologizing for what happened to Cocoyashi Village.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Luffy isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he can be surprisingly insightful, wanting Naruto and the other ninja because of their ability to Walk on Water. Even Zoro admits that while Luffy may not have that many good ideas, the few he has haven't been wrong thus far.
  • Groin Attack: Much to every man's shock, Sakura develops a penchant for this, and Buggy becomes one of her first victims.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Due to Naruto saving his life twice, Gin chooses to turn against Don Krieg and eventually joins the Straw Hat Pirates once the battle is complete.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: During the MH5 gassing of the Baratie, not only does Gin put a gas mask on Luffy, but Naruto gives one to him as well, ending up exposed to the toxic gas. It's because of this, and that Naruto tried to get him to eat as well, that Gin elects to perform a Heel–Face Turn, feeling he owes it to Naruto since he saved his life twice.
  • Like Father, Like Son: The trope is better called Like Grandpa, Like Grandson in this case. Both Luffy and Garp are Not Distracted by the Sexy and Would Hit a Girl.
  • No-Sell: Part of what makes the encounter with Garp a Curb-Stomp Battle is his ability to negate anything the ninja throw at him. For reference:
    • Earth Release: Earth-Style Wall? Garp just smashes through the walls.
    • Swallow him in the earth? He digs himself free with ease.
    • Shadow Clone Shuriken Jutsu? The shuriken just bounce off his skin.
    • Water Release: Giant Vortex? Garp just swims through it with ease.
    • A horde of Shadow Clones? Garp's strength negates the numerical advantage, and he wipes them out in seconds.
    • Great Fireball Jutsu? Garp releases a powerful exhale that reduces it to mere embers.
    • Sexy Harem Jutsu? Garp is like Luffy and uninterested in sex while having no qualms hitting women.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: Like his grandson, Garp isn't swayed by how sexy female enemies are, as Naruto's Sexy Harem Jutsu does nothing to tempt him. His reaction is one more of confusion, asking why Naruto's clones were almost naked.
  • Not So Above It All: Nami starts hollering in shock and awe like Luffy when she sees Naruto walking on water. Considering how much of a game changer such an ability is in a world mostly covered in ocean, it may count as O.O.C. Is Serious Business.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Sanji, after deducing Naruto's status as a victim of abuse due to his own abusive childhood under his father and brothers, grabs Kakashi by the neck and raises fists against him. This is something he'd normally never do, as he trained in Black Leg style specifically to keep his hands safe (losing one would be devastating to his dreams as a chef), so it's a major sign that he is seething.
  • Pirates vs. Ninjas: Played With. It's more like Pirates Versus Pirates AND Ninja, since Kakashi and the genin elect to join the Straw Hat Pirates. Any time the ninja reveal themselves as such, the reaction is pretty much gleeful awe and shock, whether it be civilians, Chef Zeff, or even Garp himself.
  • Rival Dojos: A variation on this trope occurs, as the rivalry between Naruto and Sasuke increases due to their mentors, Sanji and Zoro respectively, having their own Vitriolic Best Buds relationship, and the two are unafraid to mock their rival's teacher and claim that theirs is stronger.
  • Shout-Out: Gin joining the Straw Hats is similar to him doing the same in Coby's Choice, and the author states that the fanfic's author, SwordoftheGods, was what made the idea so appealing to them.
  • Shown Their Work: The author references their experience in practicing martial arts like Muay Thai and Taekwondo, using this knowledge in explaining where a kick's power comes in during Sanji's tutoring of Naruto in Black Leg Style, and also makes reference to sand running as a legitimate leg exercise. Given that they also are a professional archaeologist in real life, they denote that pieces of ceramic are "sherds" instead of the more generic "shards", which solely applies to glass.
  • Team Member in the Adaptation: As part of his Heel–Face Turn, Gin becomes a member of the Straw Hats.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Smoker comes to this when he looks at Nezumi's Logbook and seeing how he left the people of Cocoyashi village to suffer unjustly under Arlong while betraying the Marines, swearing to bring him to justice even if it means going into the territory of a Yonko.
  • Trapped in Another World: Due to Naruto's impulsive wish for a land to make them stronger, Kakashi and the genin get stuck in the world of One Piece.
  • Treachery Is a Special Kind of Evil: Smoker and Garp both hold this opinion on Nezumi when learning he betrayed the marines, the former swearing to hunt him down even into Yonko territory if he must and the latter brutally beating him into a pulp before deciding to ship him off to Sakazuki.
  • Underestimating Badassery: This is something Zeff tries to warn Kakashi against during their stay on the Baratie, but Kakashi dismisses this, feeling that Gin exaggerated the details of his encounter with Dracule Mihawk. It's only when he witnesses the latter's power first hand that it truly sinks in to the Jōnin, admitting he badly underestimated how dangerous the world of One Piece is.
  • We Can Rule Together: Noting that Naruto has powers unrelated to Devil Fruits, Don Krieg offers Naruto the opportunity to join him as a captain in his own right, but Naruto rejects him due to him being a Bad Boss.
  • Why Am I Ticking?: Garp smells something burning before he finds out that while he wasn't phased by the Sexy Harem Jutsu, his rant gave the ninja enough time to call fog and cover him in explosive tags that detonate.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: Zeff like in canon. He explicitly tells Sakura this is why he won't let her cook, as his teaching and management style involve large amounts of physical punishment.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Garp has no issue punching anyone, not even females, and he lampshades the trope as he beats Naruto's clones in the Sexy Harem Jutsu.
What the heck was that for? You think I just won't punch anyone if they're a girl? I punch anyone no matter who they are. Did you think just lookin' like a girl would stop me?
  • Wrong Context Magic: Ninjutsu proves to be this to the world of One Piece, more specifically the fact that they are unaffected by water unlike Devil Fruits. The ninja thus become quite powerful, something Don Krieg notices. That being said, since the people of One Piece don't have chakra, this results in them not only being immune to genjutsu, but unable to learn jutsus themselves (much to Sanji's dismay when he learns of the Transparency Jutsu, wishing to use it as a substitute for the Clear-Clear Fruit).
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Sanji and Nami reassure Naruto that despite feeling weak for breaking down crying, he's incredibly strong for being so hardworking and altruistic despite all the mistreatment he's undergone and for being willing to take on challenges no one else would do and succeeding through pure will.
  • Your Magic's No Good Here: Much to Kakashi's shock, he finds himself unable to use Summoning Jutsu in the world of One Piece.
