Fire and Ice and the Occasional Wayward Spell is a Crossover with American Dragon: Jake Long and Harry Potter by dippingdots.

Minerva was quite certain she’d sent for a capable adult dragon protector to keep the students safe and a suitable ghost representative to make sure there were no spies in their midst; not a rude, foul-mouthed dragon-apprentice who seemingly hated wizards with a passion and a half-ghost space nerd who kept complaining about not having enough caffeine at his disposal.

Fire and Ice and the Occasional Wayward Spell provides examples of:

  • All-Powerful Bystander: Clockwork counts as one in this. The Observants have been very admadant about staying out of the wizarding world's business so they forbid him from directly helping. So, when Dumbledore asked for his help, he sent Danny in his place to help them solve the problem. Despite his firm stance on not helping the wizarding world, he promised Danny that he'd step in if necessary to protect the town if his friends or Danielle couldn't handle it.
  • Ambadassador: Besides protecting the students, Danny and Jake are supposed to be diplomats there - getting to know the students while potentially rooting out traitors. However, it's easier said then done when Jake has a Hair-Trigger Temper and a lasting grudge against wizards. In more then one occasion, Jake's thankful that Danny's there with him who's far more level-headed of the two and has to constantly reminds him to be diplomatic as to not screw over the entire mission.
  • The Apprentice: As it turns out Danny has actually been one to Clockwork ever since the "The Ultimate Enemy", something Danny himself wasn't even aware of untill he was told just recently. Apparently, he became Clockwork's responsibility in order to spare him from the Observants and he's been teaching him subtlety since then. That's why he's able to go to Hogwart's in Clockwork place and accept his mission.
  • Bash Brothers: Danny and Jake have mentioned repeatedly to each other how thankful they had each other during this mission. Time and time again they've had each other's backs and they trust each other immensely.
  • Berserk Button: Do not bring up the treatment of house elves in the wizarding world to Jake. He's gone a tangent before about how terribly they're treated and he's absolutely disgusted the wizard's still use them like they do.
    • On a more humorous level, do not try and give Danny decaf coffee. Suggesting he drink tea isn't a good idea either.
  • Canon Welding: The world's of American Dragon: Jake Long, Danny Phantom, and Harry Potter mesh together surprisingly well with very good reasons why they kept to themselves and didn't interact with each other before now while still living in the same universe.
  • Cryptic Conversation: Danny's mentioned time to time how much he hates Clockwork being cryptic, wishing he could just come out and give a straight answer for once instead of having him figure it out for himself.
  • Drawing Straws: The whole reason Jake was the one chosen for this mission of protecting the students of Hogwarts was the someone decided to switch it up for once and draw straws. This is because apparently nobody wanted the job as Hogwarts considered "the root of evil" to them. Guess who got the shortest end of the straw? Something that he constantly makes clear throughout the course of the fic is how he's really unhappy with the situation he's in thanks to his previous history with wizards.
  • Fantastic Racism:
    • Thanks to Jake's previous encounters with wizards he's met before- Eli Pandarus and Nigel Thrall, he's become heavily biased towards wizards in general and even outright admitted to hating wizards. According to Lao-Shi this will be "a good learning experience for him and it'll help him with his illogical anger towards wizards."
    • Jake isn't the only one with prejudice against a certain race, thanks to Umbridge existing. She's the total sum of everything Jake hates in the wizarding world and even Danny can't stand the likes of her. It's no wonder they can't get along with her being racist against muggles, hybrids, magical creatures, and muggle-born.
  • Foil: Danny and Jake provide an interesting contrast. Both are heroes with Secret Identities with genius sisters that deserve a lot more respect from their peers. Of the two, Danny's far more level-headed with no pre-existing knowledge of the wizarding world but his previous life experiences left him wary and slightly paranoid of others. He's considerably more pessimistic of the situation and insecure of himself. Jake, on the other hand, tends to hold a much more optimistic view and seems to radiate confidence. Thanks to his previous experience with wizards, he tends to hold them into contempt more often then not and has a short fuse. Despite this he's far more trusting and naive of the duo and willing to trust people a lot more. Even the way they deal with stress is different; Danny tends to bottle his feelings up and crack jokes to relive stress while Jake wears his heart on his sleeve and swears up and down when angry for all to hear.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Discussed between Danny and Jake. While there are people who appreciate Danny for what he does on a daily basis, there's a lot of people who don't and only because he's a ghost.
Jake: It's pretty cool, though, what you do. No one human sees me doing anything.
Danny: Thanks, I guess. I don't know. People don't always like me. I'm a ghost, so.
    Jake: That's messed up.
    Danny: Yeah.
  • Ironic Fear: Largely Played for Laughs for Danny. In order to seperate from the group and get out of showing them his dragon form, Jake came up with a lie to cover up why they couldn't just follow them on the mine cart by flying. Jake's excuse: head injury; Danny's: he's terrified of flying.
Danny: Long, holy shit. Why’d you tell them I was afraid of heights? I’m a ghost, Ancients-
    Jake: I panicked.
  • Must Have Coffee: Danny is absolutely addicted to coffee which makes sense considering how many all-nighter's he pulls when ghosts attack during the night. As Danny puts it he wouldn't be able to survive without it and don't think offering him decaf will help...
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: As Danny mentioned to Harry, wizard ghosts are different from muggle ghosts with one being translucent with no means to really touch anything and the other being much more powerful and tangible at that. Before muggle ghosts were more of a rumor then anything because of the wizards refusal to enter Amity Park where muggle ghosts tend to flock the most to.
  • Schrödinger's Cat: Danny describes himself as this to Jake and McGonagall. He's only half dead because died in one dimension and didn't die in the other making him an anomaly.
  • Willfully Weak: Both Danny and Jake keep some of their powers hidden just in case their mission goes south and if they need to flee the wizarding world, they'll have some aces up their sleeve. The only powers Danny demonstrated for them was invisibility, intangibility, flight, and ecto-rays while Jake claimed that he couldn't completely change into his dragon form because it was too big. Something Danny noted right away was an obvious lie.
  • Worldbuilding: We come to find out early on that Jake's actually a species called Draco in the wizarding world and they describe themselves to be cousins to dragons.
  • Your Magic's No Good Here: In Amity Park that is. According to Clockwork, ectosignatures tends to cancel out magic and since there's so many ghosts in the area, the magical community stays far away from it considering it a haunted and mysterious place. That's why Danny's phone still works in Hogwarts because even in a place saturated in magic (where even Jake's phone has trouble working despite the built up resistance to magic) it has no trouble functioning because of the phones overexposure to ecto-energy.
