Fanfic / Evangelion: The Hangover

Go To

Evangelion: The Hangover is an Neon Genesis Evangelion fanfiction written by Strypgia — an author better known from Advice and Trust, A Crown of Stars and Costumes And Games. It begins with the four ex-Pilots waking in a hotel suite in Las Vegas in 2021, sporting wedding bands and quickly realizing the previous night was full of events. Events they do not remember.

It can be read here.

Caution: the story is somewhat NSFW. It takes place in 2021 and the ex-Pilots are around 20 years old and in sort-of-relationships. Considering that lot of the fun comes from the discovery of what has actually happened, it is advised to read the story before delving into spoilers on this page.

The main story is concluded, but occasional extra updates happen.

Evangelion: The Hangover contains examples of:

  • Accidental Marriage: Subverted. There was nothing accidental about it, they just did not remember it in the beginning.
  • Alien Catnip: Kaworu gets stoned from eating chocolate.
  • Alternate Universe: Naturally, for an Eva fic of its caliber. The story takes place more than half a decade after the anime, in a world where the pilots successfully averted Third Impact and countered both SEELE and Gendo's plans. Misato is head of NERV, while the main four pilots are around 20 and have been in on-again off-again relationships with at least one other out of the quad for the last few years.
    • As well as the show itself, it is also this to Strypgia's other fic Advice and Trust, carrying over many elements, such as Kensuke being in a relationship with Sayaka and Kyoko from Puella Magi Madoka Magica. The main different in the timeline between the two fics is that the failed kiss from the show led to a full relationship between Asuka and Shinji in A&T, while in this fic's world it instead became an on-and-off relationship.
  • Babies Ever After: Intent of the Suzuharas and the Ibukis.
  • Beta Couple: Nearly everyone from the NGE cast that appears is coupled with someone or married to someone. Visible examples are: Katsuragi (Misato and Ryouji "Kaji"), Ibuki (Ritsuko and Maya), the Aidas (Kensuke, Kyoko, and Sayaka), and Suzuharas (Hikari and Touji).
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: Asuka's description of Kaworu in chapter 7
Asuka: And this stupid Angel of Fluff, Love and Fluffy Love.
  • Chastity Couple: Hikari and Touji. Well, maybe not very chaste as they are "stuck on third base". This changes once they are married too.
  • Canon Immigrant: Sayaka and Kyoko Aida, both from Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Advice and Trust.
  • Covert Pervert: Rei. She tends to lose inhibitions when drunk or emotional.
  • Fantastic Drug: The "Romulan Ale", creation of Ritsuko Akagi. The list of its effects is quite impressive. Regrettably, it also has side effects.
Maya: This is the bests stuff. Energy drink, intoxicant, mental concentrator, aphrodisiac, and fertility enhancer, WOOO! I'm drunk, sober, awake, horny as fuck, and bursting with energy.
  • Flat "What": Asuka utters several "What." in quick succession when she finds out that the multiple wedding was her idea.
  • A God I Am Not: Rei is virtually a goddess, able to do feats of power, like telekinesis, Sight, AT-Fields on demand, and Tanging and Un-Tanging people at will. She wants nothing else but make her spouses happy. Kaworu act in a similar way.
  • Gratuitous Russian: The Russian mob speaks untranslated Russian; it's Lampshaded by Rei, who speaks fluent Russian. It is indicated that Growlskis use proper Russian, but it is never shown.
  • Hangover Sensitivity: Kaworu likes to drink, but he always pays a heavy price.
  • Holding Hands: The protagonists quickly settle into showing their affection by holding hands; especially visible with Kaworu and Shinji.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: The memories from the last night are missing, and not just due to copious amount of drinking that took place. They eventually start returning.
  • The Mafiya: The Russian mob that kidnapped Kaji.
  • The Maiden Name Debate: Somewhat averted for the protagonists. They married as Soryu-Ayanami, and while some participants are surprised, no one objects. For Shinji it could've been the case of Shed the Family Name. Completely averted for everyone else.
  • Marry Them All: The characters start the story married as a quartet. In the end, they chose to stay that way. Same happens to Kensuke, Kyoko, and Sayaka.
  • Ontological Mystery: The characters wake up in a hotel room with no memory of what happened.
  • Polyamory: The quartet marriage of the protagonists and the trio of Kensuke, Kyoko, and Sayaka. As flashbacks indicate, it began several months before.
  • Pun: Rei has developed great love for horribly bad puns, to the embarassment of her spouses. Lame Pun Reactions are common, at some point it escalates to Hurricane of Puns.
  • Relationship Revolving Door: Shinji and Asuka have been dating of and off for the last five years.
  • Ruthless Foreign Gangsters: The Russian mob before they end up repeatedly Tanged and Un-Tanged by annoyed Rei.
  • Uplifted Animal: The Growlskis, who are intelligent bears who speak proper Russian. They just need vodka.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Kaworu soon after waking up bolt for the bathroom and throws up. His Angel physiology does not handle alcohol well.
  • Wacky Marriage Proposal: Asuka to Rei, Shinji, and Kaworu. Less "wacky" more "sudden and emotional" - it is a moving speech. They accept on the spot.
  • Weddings for Everyone: Every character from NGE canon that appears is married to another. Some in more complicated patterns than others.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: Subverted. It begins very much like a reference of Hangover (it's in the title), but gradually shifts away towards a very different story.
