Fanfic / Easter Egg - Snow on Mt. Silver

Go To

Easter Egg - Snow on Mt. Silver is a creepypasta based on Pokémon, where the protagonist, Angie, ends up seeing the results that a bizarre GameShark code has on Pokemon Silver. The story's popularity in the Pokepasta community has lead to it also having a few adaptations, including, but not limited to:

A Fan Film by Shaded Scythe Studios, a Fan Game released on the site GameJolt, and a later game by Reidd Maxwell, famous for the game adaptation of Pokémon Lost Silver and its remake, their game is made in the same engine as Lost Silver.

The film can be watched here, while Reidd Maxwell's game can be found here. (The GameJolt game has been delisted from the site).

Easter Egg - Snow on Mt. Silver contains examples of:

  • Adaptation Name Change: Early versions of the fan game had the player character being named Silver. Updated releases changed it back to Blake.
  • Bittersweet Ending: While Angie’s brother does recover from his insanity, he loses the will to play Pokemon games after the incident.
  • Body Horror: Both Blake, Red and their Pokémon, are horribly mutilated by frostbite.
  • Dark Fic: Both the real world and video game portions of the story qualify. In the real world, a teenager is driven to temporary madness as a result of a seemingly innocent sounding cheat, while in the video game, two protagonists die, and end up falling victim to some ambiguous fate.
  • Easter Egg
    • The term is in the title, which is how the GameShark code is identified in the notes Angie’s brother wrote. Angie notes how this would imply the events the code uncovers should be something intended as part of the actual game.
    • Reidd Maxwell first released his game adaptation as an easter egg in “Re: Lost Silver”. To find it there, you open the Unown Dex, and press select while highlighting the Unown S, N, O, and W in that order.
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: Implied, as Meganium, a Grass type which is weak to Ice dies first, whereas Typhlosion, who is both resistant to Ice and super-effective against it, is the last Pokémon standing.
  • Fan Film: A thirty minute film that retells the story, including custom made gameplay footage (the film came out long before the fangame), can be found on YouTube.
  • Fan Game: The story has been defictionalised into a game at least twice.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Ho boy. In normal Pokémon gameplay, the trainer had no qualms walking through the Ice Cave and Seafoam Islands. Pokémon, when they are frozen, can quickly be thawed out with an Ice Heal or Burnt Berry, with Ice-Type attacks themselves doing no more than causing Pokémon to faint. All of this goes out the window once the titular GameShark code is activated.
  • Harmless Freezing: Heavily averted for a Pokémon game. In the normal version of Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal, having your Pokémon frozen simply means that they're unable to move and can easily be cured by an Ice Heal or Burnt Berry. None of this matters once you enter the GameShark code for the "Easter Egg", however.
  • Hell Is That Noise: At the end of the game itself, it causes a horrific screech, which leaves Angie in a stupor for a few moments after it eventually finishes.
  • Jump Scare: The film adds one, with a Pikachu skull flashing on-screen during the screech at the end of the game. The GameJolt game originally included this as well, but the developer removed it in an updated version.
  • Kill It with Ice: Frostbite kills Blake's Pokémon, Red's Pokémon, and then the trainers themselves.
  • Made of Indestructium: At one point, Angie’s brother throws a GBA hard enough to leave a dent in the wall. The console still runs fine.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Angie's brother is never refered to by name in the story. In the film, however, he's named Blake, and apparently named the player character after himself.
  • No Name Given: Angie’s brother goes unnamed; while his character's name is Blake, it's unclear if that's also his own name or just a random name.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Absolutely no wild Pokémon show up during Blake’s ascent of Mt. Silver, in stark contrast to the normal game.
  • Playful Hacker: Angie's brother just LOVES hacking his Pokémon games with GameShark codes. However, this comes back to bite him.
  • Plotline Death: All of Blake's Pokémon die as Blake is railroaded into climbing Mount Silver. Max Revives won't do anything to save them.
  • Slasher Smile: Red's Pikachu is described as having a huge smile stretching across its face, and it's eager to fight even though its body is horribly mangled. The fan film’s Pikachu skull also sports a similar grin.
  • Snow Means Death: The titular code not only makes snow fall on Mt. Silver, it causes trainers and their Pokémon to slowly succumb to frostbite. In the real-world portions, the story itself ends on an ominous note, mentioning that "that winter, the snow fell thick".
