Go To

A kingdom falls between the cracks born of a god's birth. Dream, children, for the age of gods and magic is come anew. Sometimes, what one receives is exactly what one needs.

Dream of Gods and Colors, Children is a crossover fanfiction between Hollow Knight and RWBY. It was first posted on Spacebattles and Sufficient Velocity by Animapower on February 25, 2020.

After defeating The Radiance at Godhome using their newfound Godhood, the Lord of Shades has freed Hallownest from the Infection once and for all. But this is far from the end of their adventures as the entirety of Hallownest has been transported to the world of Remnant where they've found themselves involved in the ancient war between humanity and the Grimm.

With their siblings and Grimmchild by their side the once little Vessel embarks to Remnant to greet their new neighbours and establish new bonds between their people. And to hopefully figure out how to be a good king and God in the process, of course.

Regardless, their arrival has caused the carefully maintained chessboard between the leaders of humanity and the forces of the Grimm to be flipped upside down as they're forced to reevaluate their plans due to the arrival of their new and completely unexpected neighbours. Who knows what changes this bizarre development will cause?

This series contains examples of:

  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Despite their emotional maturity Ghost has taken the throne of Hallownest and strive to become the good king their people need them to be. Luckily they have their siblings, the recently freed Hollow Knight and Hornet, the new queen of Deepnest, to help them out.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: The Lord of Shade's true form is a gigantic monstrosity made of pure Void. After freaking out Hornet in their first meeting after his ascension, Little Ghost takes to condensing himself into a more compact and solid form retaining the general shape of his true appearance while looking less Eldritch.
  • Adorable Abomination:
    • Even in his smaller body, Little Ghost is taller than Ghira Belladonna, has four arms and eight blank white eyes while being a pure black that absorbs light without reflecting it. That said, he still comes off as endearing because of his enthusiasm and friendly demeanour.
    • The Grimmchild is small, excitable and likes to nap in the sun when it's not hitching a ride between Ghost's horns. That said, it is still the infant form of the Nightmare King.
  • Adult Child: Despite their new form's impressive height and his surprising wisdom, Ghost's emotional maturity is closer to a child's.
  • Benevolent Mage Ruler: Ghost is noted to be exceptionally skilled with magic, both using it and researching/understanding it.
  • Big Brother Instinct: The Hollow Knight doesn't hesitate to follow Ghost and Hornet to Remnant, after failing to contain the Radiance they refuse to let anything happen to their remaining family.
  • Blood Knight: The Fools. The idea that a giant monster might escape the arena and start rampaging in the public not only overjoys said public but is actually what they think of as a lucky event.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: The Lord of Shades is a massive and powerful eldritch being made of Void that effortlessly destroyed the Radiance, a higher being of light. But past their frightening appearance and power, they are a benevolent being that used their powers to free Hallownest from the infection and with the help of Hornet unified the various tribes of Hallownest in a peaceful alliance.
  • Due to the Dead: Before leaving Hallownest the siblings take the time to return the Broken Vessel to the Abyss with the rest of their departed siblings.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: Ghost and Hornet are quite put off when Ghira informs them of the prejudices that the Faunus face from humans when the differences between the two species are minimal compared to those between the different tribes of Hallownest.
  • Driven to Suicide: Out of regret for her involvement in the creation of the Vessels The White Lady binds herself away which is later shown to practically be a slow form of suicide.
  • Fusion Dance: What happens when a being enters in contact with their Dream self if they have one. Happens to Ogrim with the White Defender in his Dream and the Hollow Knight with the Pure Vessel in the Pantheon of the Knight.
  • Handicapped Badass: Even after fusing with its counterpart in Godhome, the Hollow Knight is still missing an arm, but it doesn't let that slow it down one bit.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: After leaving Hallownest, Magenta is found drinking heavily in the morning to cope with everything she's just witnessed.
  • Modest Royalty: While not actually royalty, Hornet is left stunned when Kali brings them food and drink herself as she had assumed that she was the queen of Menagerie.
  • Mundane Utility: Ghost's true form as the Lord of Shades is immensely powerful, large, and terrifying... And also useful for pushing a ship.
  • Nonindicative Name: The residents of Remnant are left rather confused by the Lord of Shade's name 'Little Ghost' which was given to them by their sister. While it certainly fits their older and much smaller Vessel body it very much doesn't fit their new, massive Godly one.
  • Parental Substitute: Ghira and Kali's kindness and open affections have endeared the siblings quite a bit.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: General Ironwood, upon learning about the existence of Hallownest, is at most mentally prepared for a conflict with Hallownest, but is quite more interested in the potential of Huntsmen being able to learn the Bugs' Soul Magic and trade for Hallownest's crystals which could be used in Atlas technology to make the army less reliant on the Schnee Dust Company's Dust. He even recognizes that the claim of Ghost killing a being that was considered a god, while potentially an exaggerated claim, means he is likely to be a powerful potential ally against Salem should they manage to get him on their side.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: And how! Ghost and Hornet have barely taken their respective thrones for a day before they've organised a council between Hallownest's different leaders and set off to establish contact with Remnant.
  • Tranquil Fury: Ghira tries to hide it, but his claws slide out and he growls upon realizing the Pale King used his own children as a prison for a monster.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Barely arrived on Menagerie, the Hollow Knight takes the time to vent a century's worth of pain and self-loathing on the nearby Grimm population, slaughtering over a hundred of them before the sheer strength of its pent up negative emotions attracts a giant King Taijitu that it proceeds to kill much to the shock of the locals.
