Fanfic / Dragon Ball Steven

Go To

Instead of the Crystal Gems taking care of him, Steven is looked after and trained by Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo!

...Kami help the poor boy...

A crossover between Dragon Ball and Steven Universe, Dragon Ball Steven details the story of Steven Universe, Son Goku, Vegeta, Connie Maheswaren, Son Gohan, Piccolo, and the rest of the Z-fighters in their quest to protect Earth.

Dragon Ball Steven can be found here or here.

Dragon Ball Steven provides examples of:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: While he’s insulted by Ronaldo saying that he's an "underling", Vegeta is left cracking up at the rest of his documentary in Chapter 21, thinking it's hilarious because of how inaccurate it is.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Downplayed, but Goku is notably more touchy when it comes to his Saiyan heritage since he learned about it much earlier. Bringing up the Saiyan race's savage nature tends to make him tense up.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • While she was already strong in Steven Universe, this Rose was strong enough to take down Oozaru Vegeta (albeit when he was 14), and it's stated that even after Steven was born, it took Goku and Vegeta most of Steven's life to catch up to the power level Rose was at when she died.
    • Like Rose, Jasper is even stronger than in canon, claiming that she’s taken down many Saiyans in the past before the treaty between the Colds and the Diamonds was made, and is shown to be a close match even for Vegeta.
    • Raditz has been constantly training and dodging Frieza's forces for years, putting him well above his original.
  • Adaptational Heroism:
    • Thanks to Rose raising Vegeta and Piccolo, they have their heel face turns much earlier.
    • Raditz is more of a neutral ally, but he's more or less a good guy here and not the murderous Cain to Goku's Abel like he was in DBZ.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: In Steven Universe, Jamie was in love with Garnet and came across as Camp Straight. Here, he's in love with Raditz.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Downplayed with Amethyst, who was stuck under a boulder for several thousand years and unable to regenerate until the Z-Fighters accidentally freed her. As a result, she never met Rose, Garnet or Pearl, and is closer to Chaotic Neutral than Chaotic Good.
  • Bullying a Dragon: After she's freed by Steven, Peridot tries to escape the Z-Fighters, like in canon, by running into the bathroom. And when Vegeta tries to reason with her, she insults him. The now-enraged Vegeta responds by blowing a hole through the door and out the side of the house with a chi blast.
  • Commonality Connection: Chi-Chi and Priyanka become fast friends over their children (Gohan and Connie) wanting to become fighters.
  • Death by Adaptation: Pearl was killed before the story started by a group of invading Saiyans. However, she's revealed to have gone to heaven afterwards, and was briefly brought back to life by Fortuneteller Baba.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Chapter 21, "Aliens Among Us", consists of Ronaldo being convinced that the "snail people" (Namekians) are planning an invasion, with the "monkey men" (Saiyans) as their underlings/infiltrators. Vegeta thinks the whole thing is hysterical.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He's become an Anti-Hero, but Vegeta says that the Cluster Fusions Homeworld created are, in his opinion, far worse than any of the evil acts he committed before his Heel–Face Turn.
"I've seen a lot of horrible things... even participated in a few... But to do something like this to one's own kind is worse than anything I could have imagined..."
  • Foreshadowing: When Gohan and Steven are both kidnapped by Jasper, leaving Vegeta to yell at Tien, Yamcha, and Krillin, Goku yells at him to stop and focus.
"ENOUGH!" Goku shouted. A wave of energy suddenly erupted from him, disrupting the fight. The warriors had to protect their eyes as sand went flying. If they had been able to open them, they would have caught sight of the Saiyan's hair flash gold for half a second.
  • Good Is Not Soft:
    • By the time Goku came to Earth, Rose was still kind, willing to listen, and would grant anyone a Last-Second Chance, despite losing all of her friends. Turn said chance down, however, and she was entirely willing to kill the refuser.
    • Likewise, Vegeta, despite having his Heel–Face Turn far earlier than canon, is by far the most willing of the Z-fighters to resort to lethal force, and had no issues with killing Jasper after he'd poofed her.
  • Happily Adopted: After Goku's Accidental Murder of his (other) Happily Adopted parent, Grandpa Gohan, Rose Quartz takes in Goku herself.
  • Happily Married: Goku and Chi-Chi are this.
  • I Have Your Wife: Vegeta states that he was kidnapped at the age of 5 by Frieza to ensure that the Saiyans didn’t get any ideas about rebelling against him.
  • Mercy Kill: When he finds the forced Fusions, Vegeta immediately begins blasting their gems to dust, saying that since there's no way to fix them, it's all they can do to help.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Peridot notices this about Goku, saying that she'd think he was part of a subspecies if she didn't know any better.
  • Noodle Incident: Goku apparently got fleas at some point in the past.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: Goku and Vegeta have apparently wrecked the Temple's door before. A lot.
Piccolo: Damn it, Goku! That’s the third door this month!
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: During the 23rd World Tournament, due to Rose’s pregnancy being in its last stages, Krillin notices that Goku was eating less, not smiling, and was barely seeming to enjoy his fights.
  • Parental Substitute: Rose was this to Piccolo, Goku, and Vegeta while she was still alive.
  • Required Secondary Powers: Averted. The Z-fighters, aside from Steven, all need to use an entry pad Rose designed to enter the Gem Temple, since they don’t have gems.
  • Shout-Out: There are several of these to Dragon Ball Z Abridged, and the author has admitted he is a fan of Team Four Star.
  • Sole Survivor: Due to The Corruption, Pearl’s death, never finding Amethyst, and Garnet’s fate being unknown, Rose Quartz was the only survivor of the Crystal Gems – until Steven was born.
  • Stations of the Canon: Played with. While the events are proceeding more or less in the same order as canon, there are noticeably larger time gaps.
    • Gohan wasn’t born until roughly nine years after the 23rd Martial Arts Tournament.
    • Instead of being the last Arc Villain of Dragon Ball before Z started, Piccolo Jr. was adopted (somewhat forcibly) by Rose.
    • Due to crashing on Earth at the age of 14 and meeting Rose and Goku, Vegeta’s Heel–Face Turn takes place much earlier, even before King Piccolo's return.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • When he first goes to Earth, Vegeta ignores Nappa's warning about there being an asteroid belt in the area when switching to hyperdrive. He promptly hits one of the asteroids and crash lands.
    • In chapter 16, Piccolo, Goku, and Vegeta go to train in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, saying that the Gems shouldn't arrive before they get back. Jasper and Peridot land on Earth a day early, while the three are still inside.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: While Pearl has been confirmed as dead, and Rose never found Amethyst, Garnet's fate has yet to be revealed.
  • Who Would Be Stupid Enough?: When Steven finds Lion and Vegeta and Piccolo veto bringing him home, the following exchange occurs.
Steven: "No he's totally tame! Look, I even taught him to say 'I love you'!"
Steven puts his hands on Lion's lips and moves them around.
Steven (pretending to be Lion): "I love you!"
Vegeta: "Steven, stop fooling around with the oversized cat."
Piccolo: "Seriously, who did you think that was going to fool?"
Goku: "Aw, I love you too, ya big lug!" Hugs Lion.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: Vegeta plans on shattering Jasper, knowing she's a huge threat, and only stops because of the ship starting to fall apart.
  • The Worf Effect: Jasper defeats Yamcha, Krillin, and Tien after arriving in Beach City without much effort.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: When Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo find out about Lapis being trapped in the mirror, Goku says that it could be an evil spirit, and Piccolo comments that "And nine times out of ten the inanimate object that can talk is evil."
