Go To

Evelyn Nimue Tallesin is a twenty-one year old in her last semester of college. Seemingly out of the blue, she decides to quit her schooling and move to the small rural town of Castanet to be a farmer. The problem is that Evelyn has no experience with farming.

Do You Believe in Fairies? (or here on Fanfiction Dot Net) by Kitty_KatAllie is a fanfic based off of Harvest Moon: Animal Parade. There are also a series of character-focused oneshots themed around the characters.

Do You Believe in Fairies? provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Diversity: Castanet is more realistic, with characters of different genders, sexualities, etc sprinkled about the cast. For example, Kathy's lesbian, Julius is non-binary (and pansexual), and Gil is Ambiguously Jewish.
  • Adaptational Sexuality:
    • Kathy and Owen are both gay. In the games, they're both straight.
    • Chase and Renee are changed from straight to bisexual.
    • Julius and Luke are both pansexual instead of straight.
  • Adaptation Name Change: The main protagonist is named "Evelyn" instead of her Canon Name Molly.
  • Artistic License – Biology: Like in most of the Story of Seasons games, cows can be milked regardless of whether they've been pregnant or not. Evelyn's cow is able to give milk the moment she's old enough to.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Luke is treated as this because he's the youngest of Evelyn's friends. He only turns twenty several chapters in.
  • The Chosen One: Despite knowing almost nothing about farming, Evelyn is chosen by a Harvest Sprite to save Harmonica Town because Evelyn is one of the few people who can see him.
  • Constantly Lactating Cow: Like in the original game, cows can be milked immediately upon aging into adulthood, no breeding required.
  • Delayed Reaction: It takes a few seconds for Renee to understand Katie's love confession.
  • Disabled in the Adaptation: Phoebe has a shellfish allergy that she lacks in canon.
  • Embarrassing Nickname:
    • Evelyn's friend Cristina hates being called "Cris".
    • Luke hates when Evelyn calls him "Lu".
  • Energetic and Soft-Spoken Duo:
    • Deconstructed, along with Loving Bully. In canon, Shrinking Violet Candace is paired with the campy Julius, but the story adds a dose of realism and explores their relationship more. They're not actually good for one another. Julius doesn't mean to be rude, but he's still a jerk who invades Candace's personal space and critiques her. Julius' traumatic behavior as children led to Candace becoming cripplingly shy and gaining a Speech Impediment.
    • Played straight with Candace and Luke, the resident Hot-Blooded Genki Boy. Luke may be loud but he has a gentle nature which mixes well with Candace's shy and sweet personality.
  • Eyes Always Averted: Candace is not used to eye contact because she's shy and considers it too intimate.
  • Fangirl: Evelyn's a bit of a fangirl of works like Firefly, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
  • Full-Name Ultimatum:
    • In one scene from a spinoff oneshot, Kathy calls her friend Owen by his full name when she's being serious.
    • Evelyn's friend Cristina calls her by her full name when she tries to convince her not to move to Castanet.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Luna calls cats "evil, selfish divas" when she's an oftentimes mean-spirited diva herself. She even admits to being a diva afterwards.
  • Literary Allusion Title: The title comes from Peter Pan. It alludes to the comparisons between fairies and Harvest Sprites.
  • Loving Bully: The fic deconstructs Julius and Candace's canonical portrayal. Candace can't stand being around Julius because of his childhood bullying. It wasn't cute or funny to her. Instead, it left her cripplingly shy and gave her a Speech Impediment.
  • Masculine–Feminine Gay Couple:
    • Downplayed with Chase and Owen. Physically, they match the trope. Owen is a large, muscular miner while Chase is a waiter who is so pretty many initially fans confuse him for a girl. Personality wise, Owen is shy and sweet while Chase is rude and not particularly feminine.
    • The tomboyish Kathy has a crush on her girlier friend Renee. Renee herself is unsure about Kathy's feelings but is open to the idea of dating her.
  • Missing Mom: Luke and Candace both lost their mothers as children. The two discuss it and bond over it during the Firefly Festival.
  • Modern AU Fic: The original game came out in 2008 but this series has a few references to more contemporary 2010s media such as Tumblr.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Story of Seasons thrives on One Name Only, but Do You Believe In Fairies? gives several characters surnames:
    • Kathy's full name is given as "Kathy Leigh Brass".
    • Luna's surname is "Snyder".
    • Phoebe's surname is "Kettles".
    • Renee's family is the "Horn" family.
    • Selena's family is the "Toucan" family.
    • Calvin's surname is "Jones".
    • Gill's family is the "Goldstein" family.
    • Julius' surname is "Rosens".
    • Luke's family is the "Carpenter" family.
    • Owen's family is the "Gravel" family.
    • Toby's last name is "Fisher".
    • Irene's surname is "Erble".
    • Mira's surname is "Finer".
  • Oh, My Gods!:
    • Usages of "God" are replaced with "Goddess" (as in the Harvest Goddess). This is a regional thing as Evelyn initially uses a standard "God".
    • "The Tree's sake", as in the Goddess Tree, is also used.
  • Older Than They Look:
    • Toby is 26 but barely looks 23.
    • Candace is almost 25 and is older than Evelyn. Evelyn thought she was around 19.
  • Punny Name: Many characters have punny surnames. Toby lampshades this in his introduction. His surname is "Fisher" and he loves to fish.
  • Promoted to Love Interest:
    • Luke is Candace's love interest, not Julius.
    • Kathy is in love with her best friend Renee, not Owen. Renee herself isn't in love with Kathy yet, but she's open to the idea.
    • Owen and Kathy aren't a rival couple. Instead, Owen falls for Chase.
  • Retcon:
    • The name of Candace's silkworm was retroactively changed from a Coco Chanel reference to a Vera Wang reference because the writer thought Coco was too problematic.
    • Edge was originally male before the author decided to make them non-binary.
  • The Runaway: Because she's a legal adult, Selena runs off and boards a ship back to Castanet without telling her parents.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Small Town Boredom: Toucan Island is very pretty but Selena thinks of it as a Gilded Cage. It's so small, there's nothing to do, and the internet is terrible. She wants to see the world, but her parents disagree with her.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Kathy's Missing Mom isn't dead. She abandoned her family and ran off.
  • Speech Impediment: Candace has a pronounced stutter that gets even worse when she's nervous. Julius' past bullying is a large reason behind the stutter.
