Blizzard of the Red Castle (SpaceBattles link) (FF.net link) is a KanColle fanfic that has Fubuki as an orphan looking for the identity of her parents. What she doesn't know (at first) is that her mother is still alive, and happens to be someone Fubuki looks up to very much...

Tropes:

  • All According to Plan: Kongou – twice! Once regarding Anti-Frat regulations, and another concerning Fubuki's Parent Quest.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Poor, poor Nagato. By the time she awakens to her feelings for the Admiral, he is already taken.
  • And I Must Scream: Kongou during WWII was fully aware of what was going on around her, and could do nothing to stop the Japanese Empire on its road to destruction.
  • Bland-Name Product: Mutsuki's favorite brand of whiskey? Dack Janiels. Kongou's favorite rum? Admiral Jellicoe.
  • Bilingual Bonus: If you know what the names of the characters mean in English, you've be able to know who the principal characters will be in each chapter, and sometimes even get an idea what the plot might be.
    • In later chapters on the SB thread, the author uses Wabun code (Morse code for Japanese) in place of lines for scene-breaks; their content is usually in the form of (Japanese-language) commentary about the scene in question. Doubles as Genius Bonus.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Just like in the anime, Mutsu and Ooi are really into their sister ships Nagato and Kitakami respectively.
  • Cool Old Lady: Kongou, with a dash of Cool Big Sis.
  • Curtain Fic: Mother and Daughter go shopping for clothes – something neither Akagi nor Fubuki had the chance to experience before.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: An active military base is no place for an infant, much less one that's been attacked.
  • Disappeared Dad: Fubuki's father, Haruki, was killed by the Abyssals before she was born.
  • Dramatic Irony: The audience knows full well that Akagi is Fubuki's mother, and that drama is milked for all it's worth in the build up to The Reveal.
  • Famous-Named Foreigner: Gangut’s introduction features Russians Admiral Gorbachev and Olga Ivanovatch Putin, while the same chapter also mentions a French Admiral Chirac.
  • Glorious Mother Russia: Katyusha after awakening as Gangut temporarily becomes a walking example. Hibiki also had a strong phase of this in years past.
  • Hooker with a Heart of Gold: Musashi, before being discovered to be a shipgirl, was an AV actress. Though as chapters focusing on her reveal, there's a lot more to her than that.
  • I Didn't Mean to Turn You On: Fubuki's father was among the first to see Akagi as a woman and not a weapon, and told her as much. According to Kongou, that... stirred something.
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: With few exceptions, each chapter in some way includes or references the English translation of the name or names of the characters that are the principal actors. Even the title isn't exempt!
  • Immodest Orgasm: Poor Kongou. The happy couple are enjoying each other in the next room... And there's only a sheet of plywood and some wallpaper between their headboards.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Kitakami finally catches on that Ooi likes her more as a potential lover than as a sister. Hilarity Ensues.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink:
    • Mutsuki's response to finding out Akagi is Fubuki's mom? Guzzle down on Dack Janiels. Her reaction to finding out Admiral Daisuke Misaki is Fubuki's uncle? Drain her stash.
    • According to Kongou, the only way she can tolerate Kirishima's attempts at brewing tea is to slip a little bit of rum into her cup.
    • Subverted when Ooi learns that her love for Kitakami is not to be: she attempts to drown her sorrows in Hosho's bar. But, given her apparent age being below the legal drinking age of Japan, Hosho only gives her orange juice.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Aoba, obviously. After being denied information about Akagi and Fubuki's relation, she made a bunch of exaggerated claims in order to force the truth out.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Akagi being Fubuki's mom is revealed in the very first chapter.
  • Lethal Chef: Hiei's attempts have not been shown. Though, considering that the anime is canon to the story... However, Kirishima apparently can't brew a proper spot of tea to save her life, though Kongou doesn't have the heart to tell her this.
  • Little Miss Snarker: The more Fubuki is exposed to her new reality and Summoned Shipgirl Shenanigans, the more snarker Fubuki gets.
Akagi: (escorting Fubuki to the Admiral for stealing her equipment) I didn't raise you that way!
Fubuki: You didn't raise me at all.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Fubuki's mother is Akagi, with the admiral of the Yokosuka base being her uncle.
  • Meaningful Name: Fubuki's name prior to awakening is Yuki Yamashita, literally translated as "snow under the mountain". In her childhood, she lived near Mount Akagi. note
  • Moment Killer: No matter where or how Haruki and Akagi managed to get ready for some sexytime, someone would interrupt.
  • My Secret Pregnancy: Due to a range of reasons from it being private to concerns of people wanting to use Fubuki as a Child Soldier Laser Guided Tyke Bomb on Abyssals, Akagi, the Admiral(s), Kongou, Kaga, and Hosho made sure no one else knew Akagi was pregnant, then sent Fubuki to an orphanage inland to keep her safe from future attacks.
    • Later chapters have Tatsuta as aware of the pregnancy and birth, however she mistakenly believed the baby had died.
  • Oblivious to Love: Daisuke – the Admiral and Fubuki's secret uncle – doesn't pick up on the fact that Nagato is in love with him.
  • Orphanage of Love: By all accounts, where Fubuki was sent as an infant.
  • Orphan's Ordeal: Fubuki was understandably bothered at how, no matter where she looked, she couldn't find any information on her birth parents.
  • Quest for Sex: Apparently, Fubuki's parents went through a lot of effort to conceive her. It's even in the chapter title!
  • Reincarnation: Most shipgirls are summoned, being brought back from the pages of history through a special ritual. However, certain ships chose to be reincarnated and are actually ordinary girls and women that need to have their souls "awakened" before they can manifest and use their riggings. These have been dubbed "Natural Born" shipgirls due to being brought into the world, or "born," naturally. Of these Natural Borns include but are not limited to:
    • Naka – born Sayaka Kurosawa. Was an idol before being discovered.
    • Musashi – born Mitsuki Shimabukuro. She was an AV star.
    • Gangut – born Katyusha Leonidovatch Rostislav. A Russian university student who wanted government reform.
    • And of course Fubuki. Born as Yuki Yamashita... real name Fubuki Misaki. She's special as she's the only shipgirl that is also the offspring of a shipgirl.
  • Running Gag: A random NCO in the Naval District keeps getting his attempts to have a peaceful drink interrupted by kanmusu shenanigans. Specifically, shipgirls talking about their relationship issues with their sisters.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sick Episode: Fuuki catches the Flu. Between Yuudachi's reaction and Fubuki's fever dreams, it's hilarious.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: The two Misaki Brothers – Haruki, Fubuki's father, and older brother Daisuke, the Admiral of the naval district – both are good, dependable men, and both managed to win the undying love of shipgirls, the reincarnated spirits of powerful warships. Though Daisuke borders on Harem Protagonist territory, what with all the shipgirls he's collected.
  • The Talk: Yuudachi asks about this, much to Fubuki's chagrin.
