Everyone Has Standards / The Kill Count

Go To

Even though the channel covers and delights in theatrical scenes of brutality, gore, and evil, James still draws a line at some content.

  • Generally, James doesn't include animals or non-human creatures on the list, unless said non-humans are antagonists. As such, he only added kills for Cujo, Jaws (but not the sequels), and Aliens because the titular entities were the bad guys in their respective films. He also counts the Crawlers in The Descent and its sequel due to them being humanoid, and the butterfly from the third Don't Hug Me I'm Scared video due to that show's kill count being weird.
    • James also tends to get upset on the rare occasions that real animals are harmed during the filming of any movie. His usual praise of Tom Savini hit a speed-bump during the first Friday the 13th (1980) Re-Count when he learned that Savini killed a snake who actually was the pet of a wrangler who had no idea what it'd be used for on set.
  • He often expresses squeamishness at the gore and deaths on display if they are too sadistic and cruel or sexually violent. Some specific examples:
    • In his review of Jack Frost (1997), he voices his partial relief that Jill Metzner's actress Shannon Elizabeth was 24 during the film, since the 18-year-old character was raped to death in a signature scene which James found appalling and distasteful. He had a similar sentiment towards the rape scene in ThanksKilling.
    • In his review of Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood, he's upset when the Leprechaun gives a woman at a salon a Neck Snap, despite doing nothing to piss off the Lep' in the first place. He even gave the "Dull Machete" to that kill for that reason, especially since he found it uncreative compared to the other kills in the film.
    • He considers the Brazen Bull in Saw 3D messed up even by Saw standards, as it was allegedly a real Greek torture device, and it gave its (completely innocent) victim the most horrifying death in the series.
    • In Jurassic World, James begrudgingly gave Zara the Golden Chainsaw and cites his discomfort about her death scene being so elaborate and drawn out, especially given that he thought it was Disproportionate Retribution for a fairly innocuous character whose worst sin was letting Zach and Gray run off.
    • In Tales from the Hood 2, he refused to add Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black teenager whose 1955 murder was one of the most infamous lynchings in American history, to the kill count out of respect for Till. He also doesn't like how the segment describes Till and other hate crime victims as "martyrs".
James: And no, I'm not gonna put Emmett Till on my stupid, little kill count. That's fuckin' weird.
    • He's very conflicted about the decision to include a school shooting as part of the Final Girl's backstory in Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), noting how such a serious subject clashes with the more tongue-in-cheek tone of the rest of the movie. While he ultimately did include the victims in the final kill count because they were shown on screen in a flashback, he was initially unsure whether or not he should do so.
  • He also detests rapists and depictions of rape.
    • James has no intention of covering Jeepers Creepers and its sequels on the Kill Count, due to director Victor Salva being a convicted pedophile and his discomfort at giving a spotlight to a convicted predator. Likewise, he has ruled out any films by Roman Polański and Harvey Weinstein due to their respective statutory rape and sexual assault convictions and won't even consider them for the channel until after Salva, Polanski & Weinstein have died.
    • In his video analyzing the two versions (theatrical and director's cut) of Rob Zombie's Halloween (2007) reboot, he was appalled at the rape scene in the director's cut, refusing to show any major parts of it and saying he prefers the theatrical version of Halloween over the director's cut at the end of the video because of this scene, despite having liked the additional scenes with Laurie's parents and Dr. Loomis in the DC.
    • In the Kill Count for Don't Breathe, he insists on calling the Blind Man a rapist for what he did to Cindy (and what he intended to do to Rocky). In the video for the sequel, he actively rejects the film's attempts to make him A Lighter Shade of Black than the antagonists, and actually commends him when he confesses his crime to his adopted daughter.
    • In Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III James is appalled and disturbed by the implication of Leatherface being the father of the creepy child.
    • In the kill count for Happy Death Day, he voices his respect towards Carter for not taking advantage of Tree while she was drunk the other night. James tells his audience that Carter is a "righteous horror character to emulate".
    • James states outright that he's very uncomfortable with the lengthy rape scene in The Devil's Rejects and states that he judges anyone who thinks the character who commits it is cool in any way. This is also part of what cements his negative opinion of the Firefly family.
    • One of the many reasons James hates Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort is that twice, the movie's female villain takes sexual advantage of men who are in no condition to resist her (one having been brain damaged by a blow to the skull and the other being drugged).
    • He did not find the Black Comedy Rape scenes in Jack Frost (1997) and ThanksKilling funny in the slightest.
  • James hates prejudice of any kind and states that if nudity must be involved in film, both male and female actors should have equal screentime in their birthday suit:
    • In Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation he tells the audience to not insult feminism because of three misandristic witches.
    • In Valentine, he voices his hatred for the female leads for being shallow and sexist about their male dates.
    • In A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge, James addresses the homoerotic overtones and tells the audience to just accept it and take it as a lesson in empathy.
James: For any straight guys complaining about how this is super gay, which it totally is...just think about how every other movie shoots the female characters like this. You can live with one movie catering to the ladies and the gay dudes, it's okay, it ain't gonna hurt you.
    • Similarly, James has often expressed discomfort/disapproval towards films where Values Dissonance and Unfortunate Implications are present and will acknowledge and discuss these problems even in films he otherwise enjoys.
    • James has made it clear that he's not a fan of fanservice scenes in movies and considers those scenes lazy storytelling. As shown by his frustration and bewilderment by Final Destination 4's needless use of fanservice when the main character's girlfriend just stands around in her underwear for a few seconds for the sake of the camera.
    • For the kill count for Pieces, James is appalled by the blatant sexism and perversion from the director, Juan Piquer Simón, and his unnamed assistants.
  • While doing the recount for the Friday the 13th franchise, he frequently voices his discomfort about how the cast was treated, how perverted some of the directors were, and the working hazards as a result of negligence, irresponsible behavior, drugs, and alcohol.
    • James was disgusted by the real-life death of a snake, as it was a pet of the handler and he handed over the snake not knowing they were going to kill it.
    • James felt uncomfortable by the gratuitous nudity from teenagers or young adult actresses. On the other hand, he did praise the relationship between Mark and Vickie as he found it adorable.
    • James was disturbed by Judy Aronson's hazardous working conditions. According to the backstory, she lied naked on a raft in front of the entire crew during temperatures that were so cold that she got hypothermia.
    • In Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, James was both disturbed and saddened by Corey Feldman's maturity and exposure to the nudity and graphic content on set at such a young age since he was only 12 years old at the time. At the same time, James noted that some of the male leads also went nude in solidarity with their female co-stars.
    • James was clearly disgusted by the sleazy actions of Part 5's director, Danny Steinmann, who hired actresses based on bust size, was more focused on filming the gratuitous sex scene between Tina and Eddie, was being more interested in filming nudity than actually directing the cast.
    • All of the above leads to James making a point of discussing how Part 6's crew made a point of creating a safe and friendly environment for the cast, a clear reversal of previous movies. He's especially glad to note that Darcy Demoss, an actress who was fired from Part 5 for refusing to go on a date with the director, got a role in this one.
    • As much as James hates everything about the overall quality of Part 8, he's happy to note that like Part 6, its director and crew put the effort into having a positive environment for the cast.
    • In Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, James voices some approval for the creative direction and intentions of Adam Marcus, the director of the movie, despite their poor execution. One such example was a tone of admiration from James when Adam Marcus wanted to add more male nudity than female nudity, to quote the director: "Let's even the score, something for the ladies."
  • James has often disapproved of the actions of many characters in the films he covers:
    • In the Jigsaw review, he expresses disgust over the fact that so-called protagonist Anna killed her own baby in a fit of rage, framed her husband for it (by leading him to believe that he rolled over the child and smothered it while sleeping) and his subsequent guilt lead to him hanging himself, citing how he missed seeing Neo-Nazis getting run over in lieu of what was happening here.
    • James was taken aback by Calvin Bouchard's decision to save a random lady coworker from Jaws instead of his own nephew in Jaws 3-D.
    • James warned viewers of his President's Day kill count to not watch if they would be triggered by a Serial Killer in a high school (the video, while planned months in advance to be released near the titular holiday, was released a few days after the Parkland shooting).
    • In the video for The Banana Splits Movie, he states his discomfort towards Thadd's Livestream proposal by saying he'll "Do the one thing I knew I would never do to Chelsea".
    • He is taken aback by Simon's lack of respect towards a recently murdered classmate in Fear Street Part 1.
    • Despite saying that Tiffany Valentine is one of his favorite characters in the entire Child's Play franchise, he feels disgusted by her actions in the Chucky season 1 finale, where she severs all of Nica's limbs to prevent Chucky from possessing her and killing Tiffany, due to just how needlessly cruel it is to Nica.
    • James did not like how the 2010 iteration of Freddy Krueger went from being a child murderer to a child molester and murderer, as while it was true to Wes Craven's original vision, it still made Freddy go from enjoyably evil to uncomfortably evil.
    • When covering Treevenge, James expressed horror and anger that one of the victims was a baby. He even takes two chances to warn the audience ahead of time, so they aren't caught off-guard the way he had been.
  • Even when he utterly loathes the movie he is covering, James takes the time to mention the few details he does enjoy, and never holds the movie against anyone involved in production.
    • For ThanksKilling 3, he liked some of the musical scenes and the few bits of humor that worked for him.
    • For Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, he still gives full credit to the crew for having put all the time and effort into making the movie. He also states admiration for the shooting location (the same forest that inspired the Hundred-Acre Wood from the source material) and the scoring, giving particular attention to composer Andrew Scott Bell, who used a violin that had been used by actual bees as a beehive.
  • While James hates the later Wrong Turn movies for their focus on gore and death over solid plots and likable characters, he does acknowledge the clever practical effects used. He also gives credit to Declan O'Brian (director of movies 3-5) for always encouraging a fun and amiable atmosphere amongst the cast and crew.
  • This is the reason The Black Phone has no Dull Machete, since most of the kills were offscreen murders of children and James has stated that it would feel weird to penalize them. He also had a similar sentiment towards Smile (2022), due to the film having suicide as a central theme.
  • For Red Dragon, James wastes no time showing disgust for director Brett Ratner due to his history of sexual harassment and assault allegations, in addition to being appalled by his apparent friendship with the similarly accused Sean Combs and flippant attitude towards actor safety while filming a fire scene in the movie.
