AL FORNO: MUTUAL GRILLING

Danganronpa: Al Forno is a closed Discord-based Danganronpa roleplay group, with the one and only Guy Fieri as the host!

Danganronpa: Al Forno demonstrates these examples of tropes:

  • After the End: Al Forno's first chapter motive let the students know that Junko Enoshima's world ending despair had already occurred prior to this
  • A Student Body Divided
  • Amateur Sleuth
  • Back from the Dead: It actually becomes a plot point that Hone n' Scone, the company behind the killing game, has the technology to do this, but It Only Works Once per person. Two of the three characters to have received this treatment so far have been murdered once again, making them the only ones beyond a doubt permanently dead, while Junko Enoshima's status as of the fifth case's body discovery is unknown.
    • Junko Enoshima was brought back to life to participate in the killing game, with it strongly implied the intent was for her to be killed again, permanently, though the first and second culprits both targeted different characters entirely and by the third case, it seems management just gave up on trying to push people to try and kill her with the motives.
    • Guy Fieri himself is the first victim, only to reappear no worse for wear in the second chapter.
    • Mari Moto, the Chapter 2 Killer, comes back to life in Chapter 4... Only to be murdered again.
  • Big Brother Is Watching: What, you think no one is watching them murder each other?
  • Body of the Week: Every chapter results in at least one death that the remaining students have to investigate.
  • Characters Dropping Like Flies
  • Clear My Name/Clear Their Name: Happens whenever somebody is accused of the crime and fights the charges, or when their friends do their best to help them. Of course, the question of whether or not they're actually guilty is very real...
  • Clueless Mystery: The first chapter's culprit left absolutely nothing implicating herself (it wasn't a particularly clever murder, either, this trope was just caused by the case's details effectively being a massive Plot Hole). She was very briefly under suspicion for something ultimately unrelated to the case, and then abruptly confessed at the end after spending all but a few moments silently following along. This actually leads to several characters, after the fact, falsely suspecting that a Miscarriage of Justice was in play.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: The executions, which are tailor-made for each culprit. Usually, they either mock their Super High School Level talent or exploit their deepest fears, ensuring their punishment is as terrifying as possible. Occasionally, a murder victim also dies in a particularly horrible manner.
  • Deadly Game
  • Developing Doomed Characters: That's some to most of the characters. Good luck figuring out which ones they are before they die. They consist of:
    • Guy Fieri (actually Campbell Blanc), the host, Chapter 1 Victim who came Back from the Dead soon after)
    • Chiasa The Great, SHSL Supervillain, Chapter 1 Killer
    • Ryan Keeswood, SHSL Tailor, Chapter 2 Victim
    • Mari Moto, SHSL Paleontologist, Chapter 2 Killer
    • Ryouichi Miyamoto, SHSL Undercover Boss, Chapter 3 Victim + Killer
    • Ambroz Hitodama, SHSL Fantastical Investigator, Chapter 3 Victim + Killer
    • Souji Esekao, SHSL Impersonator, Chapter 4 Victim
    • Mari Moto, SHSL Paleontologist, Chapter 4 Victim
    • Fumihiro Minobe, SHSL Radiation Therapist, Chapter 4 Killer
    • Manami Enomoto, SHSL Geriatric Caretaker, Chapter 4 Killer
    • Campbell Blanc, SHSL Celebrity Impersonator and host of the game, permanently killed a second time in the fifth chapter after his secret was revealed.
    • Junko Enoshima, SHSL Analyst/Fashionista/Food Network Fan, Chapter 5 Victim
    • Jackson Coyote Davis, SHSL Rumormonger, Chapter 5 Culprit
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Guy Fieri('s impersonator) may have been the host of the killing game, but he wasn't its mastermind, and when he started to get a bit too big-headed it was decided that he should be disposed of. As a result, he tried one last time to kill Izumi Rikimaru before being shot by Gou Setou.
  • Dwindling Party
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: But who knows how much the students will have to sacrifice to achieve it?
  • Emotional Torque
  • Everyone Is a Suspect: The objective of each trial is to find out who is the most suspicious. Extends to before each individual murder, when the students must attempt to figure out who the possible complicit person might be.
  • Evidence Scavenger Hunt
  • Evil Only Has to Win Once: A single failed trial results in the execution of the contestants
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Often, relationships (both platonic and possibly romantic) are formed due to the stress everyone is put under and the bonds created thusly.
  • Humans Are Flawed
  • Involuntary Battle to the Death: Subverted! Chapter 5 revealed that every single competitor knew that they would be risking their lives for the prize, though it's left ambiguous if they knew they would be killing each other or not.
  • Kangaroo Court
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Considering its premise and the fact that it's a roleplay, the characters are not above poking fun at the supposed absurdity of their circumstances.
  • Mystery of the Week: There's a new murder every two-ish weeks in real life.
  • Pink Blood
  • Public Execution
  • Red Herring: Par for the course in a murder mystery. There's usually one or two big ones every case. Standing out so far is in the first case, literally every piece of evidence towards anyone. It was Chiasa, who abruptly confessed out of bitterness for Junko Enoshima doing the same.
  • Shoot the Dangerous Minion: After he stepped out of line one too many times, the mastermind did this to Damn Kakenny/Guy Fieri (in actuality Campbell Blanc Acting for Two, revoking his status as host of the game and authorizing any of the contestants to kill him without consequence if they so desired.
  • Shout-Out: May contain references to popular culture, internet phenomena and call-backs to previous games the muns and their muses have been in.
  • Stylistic Suck: Inverted, partially. While it's implied that Guy Fieri himself illustrates the scenes, Lisette really is that amazing at drawing.
    • Played straight for the scene where Gou shoots Campbell In the Back.
  • Teen Genius: All the students to some extent. They were initially accepted into Hope's Peak for being the best in their age bracket at what they do.
  • Tonight, Someone Dies: Specifically, every couple of weeks, someone will be murdered. Subverted in the fact that each murder can be prevented through a series of specific conditions.
  • Translation Convention: All characters are presumed to be speaking Japanese unless otherwise noted, even though the game is written in English.
  • Win Your Freedom
  • You Can't Go Home Again

quote goes here

Drawing houses is in the blood for the Setou family, it seems, and the reclusive and acclaimed architect Yasu Setou has a far less elusive teenage son. Despite his funny face and a tendency to choke on his words, the distinctively-dressed Gou’s knowledge of the field cannot be questioned, and he’s not content to let anybody forget it. From practical and affordable facilities to the pipe dreams of madmen with endless pockets, Gou can make them a structurally sound reality.

Shut up, Fieri.

Well who is this kid? Montaro Reizei? Looks like THIS loser can’t seem to remember anything about himself whatsoever! He’s got some sort of inkling that he’s someone important, though; some sorta Big Guy. He’s almost definitely an only child, or the best out of a couple. Who Knows? Not him.

Jackson Coyote Davis

SHSL Rumormonger

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/otmabsy.png

quote goes here

Recently, a public apology was released by an induvidual known as Jackson Coyote Davis, a high school student, who debunked a variety of rumors that had been plaguing the country. Jackson has been found responsible for many of the most recent scandals and rumors, such as the celebrity love dodecahedron, the ghost hauntings of Nakano Broadway, and many politician-related scandals. An abundance of information on him can be found online, but much of it is nonsensical or contradictary. Despite his age, he has clearly displayed skills of being able to manipulate the flow of rumors on a national scale, and as a result, he has been offered a title as a Super High School Level in exchange for facing various charges such as slander. It’s unknown what rumors he’s responsible of beyond the major ones he debunked, but there’s a rumor itself that he runs an underground business where he spreads rumors for ridiculous fees. Of course, that in itself is only a rumor, so whether it’s true or false remains a mystery. Still, Hope’s Peak Academy has taken on this young man as a student, so there must definitely be a seed of potential germinating in him!

  • The Gadfly: Kakenny frequently uses verbal insults or jabs at those around him, claiming that he never learned how to properly communicate or form bonds.
  • Cuckoo Snarker
  • Word-Salad Humor: The majority of his vocal patterns are references to the vine compilations he edits endlessly

Ambrozic "Ambroz" Hitodama

SHSL Fantastical Investigator

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ambroz.png

quote goes here

Ambrozic ‘Ambroz’ Hitodama is the star personality and host of the online cryptid, ghost, and alien (and more!) hunting show Beasty Boys. Running it with his partner in crime Hidenaga, he’s bursting with personality and things to say. When asked by Hope’s Peak which of his various supernatural specialities he wished to have recognized for his talent, as the school considered it all semantics anyway, he requested ‘fantastical’ as a catch-all term for the various things he studies in his show. For someone so prolific on the internet as a known personality, he lacks a solid documented past before the launch of his show, so various rumors float around the internet about his potential origins.

Ryan Keeswood

SHSL Tailor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryan_real.png

quote goes here

Anyone who picks up a fashion magazine that’s been printed in the last couple years will likely have read the name Ryan Keeswood at one point or another. As the co-owner of a small but increasingly successful tailoring business, Ryan is used to networking and dealing with people. His brothers provide the kid with support and are trusted to buy supplies, but generally the only one who does any clothes making around the place is Ryan. Always offering a reasonable price and clothes that are guaranteed to come to clients with years worth of life in their stitches, the business is praised for it's reliability. The kid offers services producing commissioned outfits, costumes and has mended some very fragile items of apparel more than a couple times. Tokyo’s street fashion scene has been invaded by this boys craft after he won a design competition hosted by one of Tokyo’s trendiest fashion names. Although still more known for the quality that his products are made with, the striking nature of the outfits he makes has made them popular mostly among the teen and alternative communities.

Fumihiro Minobe

SHSL Radiation Therapist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fumihiro_sprite.png

"Well, there’s something that makes everyone tick. Once you find it, it’s pretty easy to bend them one way or the other."

Few can begin to understand why someone so young - not to mention apparently troubled - would begin to pursue a career as specific and seemingly bland as radiation therapy, but pursue it Fumihiro did! Around 8th grade he, without any warning, jumped ahead in his studies. In just two years, Fumihiro went from being a typical, troubled eighth grader to being a college graduate and practicing radiation therapist, though his practice puts out surprisingly low reviews. He joined a research team at the University of Tokyo and helped pen a revolutionary new study on the effects of radiation on cancer cells. This accomplishment vaulted his name to the headlines, and Minobe Fumihiro became a rising star in the realm of medicine. Many even speculate that he might be the one to one day cure cancer for good!

quote goes here

The name “Chiasa the Great” is known and feared worldwide, as it is the title of an infamous super villain who has been terrorizing the world for the past few years. She is known best for taking over Finland, renaming it Harmonious for… some reason, before abandoning it a few days later. She is fearsome and powerful, refusing to take no for an answer, and brilliant for coming up with her own super weapons and doomsday devices.

Manami Enomoto

SHSL Geriatric Caretaker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/manami_with_mask_1.png

Please. I'll, um, I'll help however I can.

Known for her compassion and determination to help others, Manami Enomoto became famed for her advancement in the social aspects of geriatric care. While she specializes in helping care for the mentally and physically disabled, her talent has been requested in both private households and public retirement homes across the nation.

  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Hers is long enough that it's reminiscent of Rapunzel.
  • Cool Mask: She wears a medical mask over the lower half of her face at all times, though claims it's out of habit more than any actual fear of getting sick.
  • Stepford Smiler: Even if others can't quite see it due to her mask, she's a definite one of these.
  • The Woobie: Despite her best efforts to be otherwise, there are definite times that she comes across as someone who deserves a fair share of sympathy such as when she broke down into tears after Fumihiro revealed to the group that's she's deaf or her reaction to Mari being first been accused and then later proven to have killed Ryan.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's a sweet girl, but undoubtedly more timid than the others. Not to mention, she's quick to apologise even if the only person she's offended is herself.
  • The Medic: As one of the only members of the group with any formal medical training, she's the closest they have.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: Or so the others seem to believe. She would disagree.
  • Friendless Background: Due to her secluded childhood, she never had much of an opportunity to make long term friendships with people her age. Her current record is 4 whole friends at once.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Subverted, given that she knows next to nothing beyond the most basic of basics. Kettles of tea and pots of coffee are her specialties. Her only specialties.
  • Hiding the Handicap: Though it was rather obvious to some, she still did her best to hide her deafness from the others.
    • It became somewhat of a moot point after Fumihiro figured it out and told them all anyway.
  • Sense Loss Sadness: She's outright ashamed of her disability, and assumes that others will feel similarly about it if they know — or, to be more specific, about her.

She then began taking jobs and soon enough began getting awards for how many planes she has flown. She has various awards, a list much too long to get into but most of them have to do with the number of planes she’s flown! Ambre isn’t just good at flying planes but she’s also fluent in French and Japanese as well as a bit of English! With her bright personality that can light up everybodys day she seems like quite literally the perfect candidate to fly a plane!

Growing up, Mari Moto was always around dinosaur exhibits and facts because her parents owned a well-known museum. Over the years she would always dig into the ground in hopes of discovering one a fossil for herself. Sadly, she was never that lucky, that is until she turned 10 in which she discovered a new fossil. This baffled the scientific community and they deemed her the SHSL Paleontologist.

Izumi is the lesser known of the two Rikimaru sisters; her older sister, Sadako, being a famous fashion designer. It’s said that the sodas and floats Izumi creates are out of this world, leading to her gaining a small cult following that’s still growing. She’s admired for bringing an old profession back to life, and many of her fans are charmed with the novelty of her work and will travel to see her. She’s mostly popular on the internet, while you hear the name Rikimaru quite often because of Sadako Rikimaru’s recent disappearance.

Souji Esekao - After the reveal.

quote goes here

Niru is generally just known as a agreeable person to be around. They don’t like to tell people what their talent is, since they assume people usually have a bad opinion on it, often claiming parapsychology to be a pseudoscience. Despite their talent, Niru is actually a fairly bright and pragmatic person who isn't one to jump to conclusions. They have extensive knowledge on various subjects relating to parapsychology, such as EM Fs, radios, cameras, and things that cause hallucinations. Contrary to popular belief, Niru’s focus is actually in the subject of reincarnation and afterlife planes, not so much ghost-hunting. Not much personal information is available about Niru on the internet, as they go by a fair amount of aliases and personas.

Souji Esekao is generally the go-to guy if you want to weasel your way out of a meeting. Being a professional impersonator, they’re an expert at makeup and capable of taking full advantage of their wide vocal range, making them the perfect candidate to appear in the place of anyone who looks even vaguely similar. Their skill at pinpointing people’s mannerisms and quirks is unmatched for their age, and their excellent acting abilities allow them to copy just about anyone imaginable.

Hidenaga started their career with Ambroz and the two have lept to relative fame ever since! Despite being the cameraman behind the magic that is their show, Hiden cherishes their position and love what they do, on top of watching Ambroz do his stuff. There’s little to be said of them outside of their show simply due to little information being found. Regardless, Hiden is lovely to have around and is sure to capture whatever magic life throws their way.
